And that'll be all from us here today.

Thank you very much for following, and we'll be back tomorrow in what promises to be an entertaining and unpredictable clash between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

For now, here's my colleague Timothy Abraham's match report.

We look forward to you joining us again in the morning.

India captain Rohit Sharma: "We have made a very good start. But we know that is only the job half done and there is a long way to go.

"It is important for us to stay balanced, not look too far ahead.

"Mohammed Shami took his opportunity with both hands. He is a class player, with so much experience and I am very happy for him.

"At one stage we were looking at chasing 300 plus. The way Mitchell and Rachin batted, they put up a very good partnership.

"But our bowlers pulled it back nicely for us, they deserve a lot of credit because it was a great effort to reduce them to less than 280.

"I am enjoying my batting at the moment. Shubman and I bat very differently, but we complement each other. I would have liked a bigger contribution but the win is the most important thing.

"Virat has done it for us so many times. He is a calm head and just what we need in that situation.

"We pride ourselves on our fielding. We have been brilliant before today, we were not as clinical as we expect from ourselves. These things happen but we will put that right."

The most remarkable part of the day arguably came from events off the field, however.

I, for one, have never seen fog stops play before. The ground literally became submerged in a cloud.

I suspect there will be plenty of opinions around Virat Kohli's decision to go for the six to get his hundred rather than finish unbeaten and get his side over the line.

But there is no mistaking that he played magnificently once again.

  5. 'We weren't that far away'published at 18:09 British Summer Time 22 October 2023

New Zealand captain Tom Latham: "I thought we played reasonably well. Towards the back 10 overs, we didn't quite capitalise on the position we were in but credit for India for how they bowled.

"We probably left a few out there.

"With the ball, we went past the bat a few times in the first 10 or 15 overs but just couldn't get the wicket and they formed partnership after partnership.

"I don't think we were that far away and we did a lot of good things out there which is the pleasing thing.

"Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell played really well to set us up for the last 10 but we couldn't capitalise.

"From a batting point of view, it was our perfect blueprint with wickets in hand but we didn't capitalise on it. Those are the positions we want to be in and we know, if we get it right, we're a dangerous side in that last 10."

India are certainly playing well. But the apprehension about the semi-final and a knockout game, if you presume India make that top four, is something that inevitably bothers me and will bother a lot of India fans.

However much you take 2019 out of your mind, it does keep coming back. India performed really well in the group phase of that tournament but still fell to New Zealand in the semi-final.

Who knows who their opposition will be if they make it that far.

India have got the home advantage, they've got the conditions, they're used to the climate and the environment.

I just think they look like a well-rounded team. The way they navigated that chase was just perfect.

That game does showcase just how tough it is going to be to beat India.

They didn't field well - several catches were spilled.

Their five-bowler strategy was severely tested as New Zealand got after Kuldeep Yadav.

New Zealand fielded out of their skin, and India played and missed at countless deliveries in the powerplay.

And yet, despite all that, they won relatively easily in the end.

  9. 'First-ball wicket gave me confidence'published at 17:57 British Summer Time 22 October 2023

Player of the match, India's Mohammed Shami: "Obviously, the start was important and getting a wicket first ball gave me confidence.

"It's not too hard watching when the team is doing well. It's important as a player to be there to support the team.

"It's important to pick up wickets, especially against another good side."

I think the injury to Hardik Pandya was an important thing in the sense that it forced India to make a couple of changes, it allowed Jadeja to have a hit out in the middle which he hasn't had for a while.

Mohammed Shami has given them a bit of a headache because how do you drop someone who has taken five-for?

Mohammed Shami is named player of the match for his five-wicket haul that was instrumental in halting New Zealand's momentum.

They should have got 300 at least, but his efforts at the death firmly put the brakes on them.

    We'll hear his thoughts shortly.

A huge step for India. Both of these teams had four wins from four coming into it.

New Zealand didn't make it easy for India but were probably 30 or even 40 runs short to be extra competitive.

But they took wickets throughout and put Virat Kohli under pressure.

The difference between the sides was the first 10 overs, the powerplay of each team, when New Zealand had 18 after eight overs and India had 50 after 10.

Daryl Mitchell's century, Mohammed Shami's five-for, Mitchell Santner's mastery and Virat Kohli's fireworks.

It was a game that had a bit of everything, a game that was a lot tighter in the end than many would have predicted, but still we await the first properly close finish that this World Cup is crying out for.

That win doesn't dent New Zealand's hopes, but they have got a tough run of games to come with Australia, Pakistan and South Africa awaiting them.

That's the win for India, Jadeja takes them home.

The hoodoo of New Zealand is over, 20 years of hurt in ICC competitions is done.

It's been a brave, brave fight from New Zealand but in the end, India were just too strong.

Well bowled Matt Henry and well played New Zealand. They have now given themselves an outside chance.

    It's four balls.

Kohli goes for glory, and is caught.

He tries to reach his century and seal India's victory with a six, but picks out Glenn Phillips on the boundary.

Cue silence - even though India are still just five runs from victory.

Playing for his own glory, and not the team's, perhaps?
