A quiet over - just two from it as Mujeeb fields off his bowling and hurls the ball back at the keeper with a hint of aggression.

This could be a very quick innings with the spinners racing through their overs like this.

A lot of width and Abdullah Shafique takes that straight over the infield. You are better off taking it up and over on this pitch than through the field.

  3. Pak 13-0published at 3 overs

Just as I start to type that batting doesn't look particularly easy at the moment, with Abdullah getting a leading edge that just drops short of mid-off, he follows it with an emphatic thump over the covers for four.

  4. Pak 8-0published at 2 overs

Playing Afghanistan is usually a trial by spin, and here's an early look at Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who was fantastic against England last week.

A tidy over, but he misfields off his own bowling which gives away an unnecessary single and almost a run out chance, but the batters survive.

  5. Pak 5-0published at 1 over

Oooh! A flashing drive from Abdullah flies just past backward point for Pakistan's first run.

Imam ul-Haq then clips the ball nicely through mid-wicket for the first boundary, spoiling what was a solid start for Naveen.

It's very early days, but it doesn't look easy to time, which can happen on a used pitch.

  7. Carse replaces Topley in England squadpublished at 09:31 British Summer Time 23 October 2023

If you haven't already seen this morning, England have called up Brydon Carse to replace the injured Reece Topley for the rest of the World Cup.

Topley unfortunately suffered a broken finger in Saturday's thrashing by South Africa.

Carse is expected to fly out tomorrow, but is unlikely to be ready for England's next game against Sri Lanka on Thursday.

  8. Pak 0-0published at 0.1 overs

A hint of swing, just inside the wide line from Naveen, and Abdullah can easily let it go through to the keeper.

Both sides will want a solid 100 overs to try and come out on top. Both have their motivations. Pakistan know that if they are to stand any chance of qualifying, they have to win today.

So in terms of the table, Pakistan in fifth are still in a decent position to qualify for the knockouts, and need to win today to keep that momentum going.

Afghanistan shocked England but have lost their other three, so find themselves at the bottom of the table.

Here come the Pakistan openers, Imam ul-Haq and Abdullah Shafique, who are both in decent form.

Promising Afghanistan seamer Naveen-ul-Haq takes the first over.

  12. 'We want to restrict Pakistan to 250'published at 09:24 British Summer Time 23 October 2023

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi: "Honestly, we wanted to bat first. When the toss is not in your favour, you have to play good cricket."

Any changes?: "We have one change. Farooqi is out and Noor Ahmad is in."

You have picked four spinners, is that how you see this pitch?: "We recently had a series with them in Sri Lanka, we wanted more spin options, we think it will be effective in these conditions."

What do you think is a score that you can chase?: "250, we want to try and restrict them as much as we can."

Pakistan captain Babar Azam: "The pitch looks quite dry so we would like to get some runs on the board.

"Shadab Khan comes back in for Nawaz, who has a fever.

"We have given 100% in all our matches and we are looking forward to doing the same today.

"I am asking my team to stand up and perform and believe in ourselves.

"We know how dangerous their spinners are so we are aware of that."
