  1. Post update

So New Zealand are all but in the semi-finals of the World Cup, although it will not be officially confirmed until the result of the match between England and Pakistan on Sunday.

If they do go through, they are set to face India, with the winner of that to face either Australia or South Africa in the final.

You can read Ffion Wynne's report of the Black Caps' win here.

We will be back first thing tomorrow morning for Afghanistan's meeting with South Africa in Ahmedabad.

    Goodbye!

  2. 'We'd love to face India if we get there'

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "A really good performance, with the early wickets. Spin was quite a challenge in those middle overs, the guys did a great job and did so with the bat as well

Did you expect the pitch to be like that?: "We expected the first one to be a bit like that, we expected weather but there was no weather. I thought we read it really well, we know this ground can be difficult to defend, we got those wickets at the top and restricted the total.

What pleased you the most?: "The seamers in the middle overs kept it tight, the seamers were outstanding which was really important for us.

Will you be watching Pakistan's game with England, knowing you've all but qualified?: "There's a few teams that could end up on similar points. It's out of our control, we have a couple of trainings, a couple of days off, I don't know how it will look but it's great.

Are you excited to be potentially facing India in the semi-finals?: "To get here and hopefully, if it goes our way, get to a semi, to play the host team will be a great opportunity. We'll look forward to the challenge if we get there.

  3. 'We lost too many early wickets'

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis: "In the first 10 overs we lost too many wickets and that meant we struggled in the middle overs. If we'd had a good score in the top order we'd have got over 300 and that would be a good score on this pitch.

"Dilshan Madushanka bowled really well but since they were chasing a small total it was difficult to take wickets. He bowled reasonably well though.

"I got the captaincy after two games. I quite enjoyed it. It was disappointing from my side about my own performance but I enjoyed the captaincy.

"I am very happy to see a couple of players putting their hands up and performing. Those guys will be our guys for the future."

Here is how Glenn Phillips got the job done, hitting back-to-back fours to all but guarantee New Zealand a spot in the semi-finals.

    Alex Hartley

Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

I think as soon as you pick up a few wickets in the power-play, it's always tough. New Zealand picked up five wickets in 10 overs! From then we knew it was going to be New Zealand's win.

  6. Post update

    Henry Moeran

    BBC Test Match Special commentator

This is set to be the same semi-final line up that we saw eight years ago, with a bit of variance.

  7. 'Nice to be on the right side of it'

Man of the match, New Zealand's Trent Boult: "It is nice to get a bit of success at the top of the innings. It was a big game for us and must-win. It is pleasing to get the result.

"It is always a challenging format and part of the world to open the bowling. I have used my experience in some of the games and it was nice to be on the right side of it.

"It is always the biggest challenge coming to this part of the world and facing different conditions. They have changed a lot during the tournament. We want to push for a big finish.

"Everyone wants a piece of the host nation. They are playing phenomenal cricket. I'm sure it will be an exciting game."

Sri Lanka did the damage to themselves in the first 10 overs of the match.

  9. Post update

    James Franklin

Former New Zealand all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

New Zealand should take a bit of confidence and get back on the horse. Now they have that winning performance, it should settle everything down.

From four successive defeats New Zealand are back on track. That was impressive!

    James Franklin

Former New Zealand all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

New Zealand had a professional day out, that is the best way to put it.

They won the toss, batted well. An all-round good day.

  12. BreakingNew Zealand win by five wickets

    NZ 172-5

Job done. New Zealand win emphatically!

That was a very professional and disciplined display from New Zealand. They may have lost some wickets, but you always felt that New Zealand were going to take this victory, and in some style, very early into this day.

Phillips gets the job done, pulling Madushanka's short ball through backward square leg for four,

Barring something extraordinary this weekend, New Zealand will face India in the World Cup semi-finals next week.

  13. NZ 168-5

    Target 172

    Well, that's half of them!

A firm drive from Phillips off Madushanka sends that ball away for four down the ground in between mid-on and mid-off.

    Four to go.

  14. NZ 164-5

    Target 172

Only eight to go for New Zealand here! They should get this done in this next over.

  15. Not out

    Target 172

Not a surprise, that was quite a bit outside leg stump and wicket-keeper Latham survives.

    James Franklin

Former New Zealand all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

They have to review it, but the gut feeling is that it's not out.

  17. Umpire review

    Target 172

Mathews finds the pads of Latham but it didn't look very out, Sri Lanka gamble and take it upstairs.

Asalanka takes a brilliant catch, he slid along the turf, got both hands underneath it and clung on!

  19. WICKET

    Mitchell c Asalanka b Mathews (NZ 162-5) Target 172

They don't make it easy for themselves, do they?!

Mitchell, like openers Ravindra and Conway, goes in the 40s. He looked to clip it away, but Asalanka is there to take a fantastic catch on a stretched dive at deep cover-point.

    Another wicket for Mathews.

Loose delivery from Mathews, That was asking to be hit.
