Plenty in this pitch early on for the seamers. The ball is gripping and occasionally getting stuck in the surface. Makes this start from Phil Salt especially impressive.

  2. Eng 43-0published at 5 overs

Alzarri Joseph whacks Salt on the glove with some extra pace before deceiving him with a slower ball, showing there is something in the pitch for the bowlers.

But it's the inconsistency again that costs Joseph, as a short ball is gratefully pummelled to the boundary by Jacks once more.

    Eng 39-0published at 4.3 overs

My word, how does he make that look so easy?

Phil Salt effortlessly whips Alzarri Joseph over mid-wicket for six, the purest of timing.

    Salt 20, Jacks 12

The boundaries are flowing. A simple back-foot punch from Will Jacks, rather Joe Root-esque, races away to the cover boundary.

The timing is so good, the fielder in the ring stood no chance.

Romario Shepherd recovers well though, just two singles coming from the rest of the over.

There is some decent support around the ground, with fans enjoying the Antigua sunshine on the grass banks surrounding the pitch.

I'm not jealous at all. Honest.

    Wow!

Will Jacks, with a steady one from six balls, gloriously lofts Alzarri Joseph over the covers for six more! Great shot.

Tough start for West Indies' bowlers. The pitch looks rather flat and there isn't much swing.

Two overs in and already Phil Salt has shown what England were so desperately lacking in the World Cup.

    Hello!

Phil Salt concludes Romario Shepherd's first over with an almighty six over square leg, followed by a sweet cover drive for four!

Will Jacks got himself off the mark with a single earlier in the over, but it's been Salt's show so far.

According to CricViz's metrics, 269 is a winning first-innings total at this ground, which has hosted ODIs for 16 years.

The average total in the first innings is 239, with the highest total the 322-6 amassed by Australia in 2007.

  9. Eng 8-0published at 1 over

    Oooh, that'll do nicely.

Phil Salt takes a look at three dot balls before launching the fourth down the ground for four.

Followed by four more, but much less convincingly, as an inside edge squirts through his legs and past the stumps down to fine leg.

Will Jacks (and Phil Salt as well I guess) has been told he will be opening in all three ODIs.

Five members of the original World Cup squad are playing plus Brydon Carse, who came in as Reece Topley's replacement.

Carse will perhaps be looking to play that Liam Plunkett role from 2015-2019 in the middle overs.

Phil Salt, one of the more experienced members of England's "new era", gets an inside edge on the first ball from Alzarri Joseph but it glances safely on to his back leg.

Joseph's pace and experience will be key for West Indies throughout this series.

There will be a lot of chat about England's World Cup in the build-up to this series, which is somewhat inevitable given how disappointing it was.

This series marks the beginning of their "new era", says captain Jos Buttler, with a new-look side and many experienced players resting.

Only six players from the World Cup are involved in this ODI series.

"It's certainly a bit of a new beginning - there's some brilliant, exciting talent in this team," said Buttler.

"Young guys needed to get their opportunities and perform.

"The Caribbean is a nice place to start this journey for a team and everyone is really looking forward."

West Indies captain Shai Hope on TNT Sports: "We would have had a bowl so we're happy. It looks a decent pitch, it's pretty fresh but the early moisture should work in our favour.

"We have to take every game seriously and we know there are points to play for. We are looking ahead to the next World Cup in some ways but we are focused on this series."

England captain Jos Buttler, speaking on TNT Sports: "It looks a pretty good wicket. We think it will stay the same through the 100 overs so we want to make first use of it with the bat.

"It is a really exciting series for us. We have lots of guys new to the ODI scene eager for their opportunity. There's so much talent in the group so lots to look forward to.

"We want to be really positive, play on the front foot. Be able to adapt when the conditions require and have a lot of fun doing it.

"The unlucky guys who aren't playing today are Ollie Pope, Tom Hartley, Matty Potts and John Turner."

No surprise with batting first after talk of the pitches taking spin in Antigua. The talk in the build-up was a par total of around 275.

    Good afternoon!

    Have you missed us?

It's been two whole weeks since the World Cup ended, and England are already back in action.

It was a World Cup to forget for both of these teams. England didn't make it out the group stage and West Indies weren't even there. It may not feel like the biggest occasion, but both sides have plenty to prove.
