  1. England lose thriller to West Indiespublished at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2023

That's all from this live page - thank you for joining us.

My colleague Ffion Wynne's match report is now live and can be found here.

We will be back on Wednesday at 17:30 for coverage of the second ODI as England attempt to level the series.

England's women are also in action that day as their T20 series against India kicks off in Mumbai. We will have live text coverage of that one starting at 13:30.

    Until then, farewell.

  2. 'I always back myself to win from any position'published at 21:43 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2023

West Indies captain and player of the match Shai Hope: "It was in a winning cause that's all we play for, the stats will come but my aim is to win games and I'm happy the guys crossed the line today."

"MS Dhoni and I had a chat a while ago and he said you always have more time than you think and that's one thing that stuck with me throughout the years playing ODI cricket, and as long as we have that firepower in the back end I always back myself to win from any position and it's nice to see the guys chasing scores of 300 plus."

On his partnership with Shepherd "He was amazing, he's one of those guys you can always depend on at this level and we got the one to start the series on a high and the aim is to repeat this in the second game."

On his bowlers "We were thinking what was the best thing to do at that time I though their openers played really well we just got to try start better in the next game and learn from these things. The faster we learn the faster we will improve."

JohnTrafik: How long does this go on before someone calls out the fact that Buttler is no captain?

Jonathan France: Buttler looks frazzled as captain. Why didn’t he bowl Jacks on a raging Bunsen? Would’ve had more options at the end & wouldn’t need to bowl Curran. An awful result and the questions about Buttler & Mott’s leadership will continue!

Al: It really is time to 'rest' Buttler from captaincy - Morgan was a better captain than batsman, Buttler is the opposite. Just poor, and consistently so...

  5. 'We will learn a lot from that'published at 21:31 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2023

England captain Jos Buttler: "It was a fantastic game of cricket. A lot of credit has to go to Shai Hope and Romario Shepherd. They did really well at the back end to chase those runs down.

"I thought it was a fantastic batting effort by us. They [Phil Salt & Will Jacks] set the tone at the top. They pegged us back a bit in the middle phase but it was fantastic effort to get to that score and it needed a fantastic innings to chase it down."

On his own form: "You always want to play well. It has been a while since I played to my best so I need to keep working hard and trust that I can come back

"It was a brilliant game of cricket, credit to Shai and Romario. It was some fantastic hitting. We will learn a lot from that.

"I thought there were some fantastic phases for us. Rehan Ahmed was outstanding and there was a lot to be proud of. There was a lot of good stuff in the game. There's things we can do better and we look forward to the next one."

Will Jacks is a decent spin bowler yet Buttler refuses to use him. I just don't get it.

    Tony, Hull

I think it would appear to be quite poor from Buttler not to use Will Jacks when the wicket is so responsive to spin.

    Conrad, Banbury

It does feel puzzling given the seamers' struggles. It was spin that gave England a semblance of control in the middle overs.

England looked to be in control when they took two quick wickets to reduce West Indies to 213-5 in the 38th over, but Shai Hope guided the hosts home superbly, helped by some incredible power hitting by Romario Shepherd.

That will sting for England though, who were desperate for a morale-boosting result after their miserable World Cup defence.

What a knock from the skipper. He strikes at 77 normally. Today, he’s played a record-breaking hand. Awesome. England will wonder how they lost that game. 325 should have easily been enough but their death bowling was woeful and the failure to use Jacks in the middle overs was entirely perplexing.

And Shai Hope wins it with another six!!!

What an incredible innings by the skipper, who ends unbeaten on 109 thanks to three sixes in four balls.

Poor Sam Curran bowled short, full, wide, straight slower, faster. But whatever he did it still got pummelled to the rope.

  10. How's stat?!published at 21:07 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2023

Shai Hope now has 16 ODI hundreds, this is his first against England.

What a shot. What an innings.

Shai Hope hammers the ball over deep mid-wicket again to bring up his century and put West Indies on the brink of victory.

  12. WI 314-6published at 48.3 overs

Sam Curran drops the next ball wide and it escapes through to Buttler for a dot ball.

How many times has Curran missed his length, by literally feet?

  14. 6 runs

    WI 314-6published at 48.2 overs

Oh dear, Sam Curran. He goes for the attempted yokrer but it turns into a juicy full toss that Shai Hope gleefully hammers over the rope for six.

  15. WI 308-6published at 48.1 overs

Alzarri Joseph slashes the ball into the off side for a single.

18 runs needed from 11 balls.

Sam Curran will bowl the penultimate over. He is 0-79 from his nine overs so far.

The pressure is on the England seamer.

West Indies need 19 runs from 12 balls

Shai Hopes bags another two with a shot down to long on.

Gus Atkinson ends the over with a very valuable dot ball to keep new batter Alzarri Joseph on strike next over.

  18. WI 305-6published at 47.3 overs

Alzarri Joseph gets off the mark with a single first ball before Shai Hope slaps the ball through the off side for two.

You can feel the tension from the crowd.

Familiar problems with England’s death bowling. Sam Curran has had a torrid time, and Carse’s slower balls just haven’t worked. Atkinson is the only England seamer to have threatened today, and he deserves that wicket, albeit that it’s surely too little, too late, now.
