Shocking captaincy here on display. Backs against the wall and Stokes has hung his debutant out to dry and burned all the reviews on ridiculous calls. He's been fantastic since he took the job, but this is so so poor.

  2. Ind 94-1published at 18 overs

You can understand Ben Stokes giving Tom Hartley a decent spell. Take him out of the attack after a couple of poor overs and it'll just dent his confidence even further.

    But when is it enough?

It's time for some Rehan Ahmed from the other end so it looks like Stokes will start the changes.

  3. Ind 91-1published at 17.1 overs

    Perhaps not.

Tom Hartley drops another one short and Jaiswal doesn't need any more encouragement. He whacks it to the mid-wicket fence.

  4. Ind 87-1published at 17 overs

Slow and steady from India as we trickle towards the close of play.

Shubman Gill blocks out another Jack Leach maiden. His approach will test Yashasvi Jaiswal's temperament at the other end.

Tom Hartley looks a lot more comfortable bowling to the right-handed Shubman Gill, who is still being cautious.

He does send down another front foot no-ball but it's a boundary-less over, which will be a huge relief.

  6. Ind 84-1published at 15 overs

Rohit Sharma's departure has slowed things down a little for India as Shubman Gill is happy to take his time in getting settled. And with such a decent platform, he can do so without pressure.

He negotiates a maiden from Jack Leach, who is bowling tidily but I don't think he's got a ball to turn yet.

  7. Ind 84-1published at 14 overs

In fairness, that was probably the most convincing review of the three - it was close, and could've been out in one or two ways.

The first two were poor. Ben Stokes is, of course, still full of smiles. He gives Tom Hartley a hug and a pat on the back.

That is tough luck on Tom Hartley! When things aren't going your way, things aren't going your way.

Ben Stokes is showing a lot of confidence in his debutant and he's unlucky not to get his first wicket.

  9. Not outpublished at 13.2 overs

No bat, and it's missing the stumps. Shubman Gill survives.

England have wasted all three of their reviews in the first 14 overs.

  10. England reviewpublished at 13.2 overs

One review left and Stokes takes it! He is desperate for Tom Hartley to get his wicket here.

It's another lovely ball, skidding through bat and pad. It's given not out on the field but it could be lbw or caught behind.

That was a nice bit of bowling from Jack Leach. There was a little bit of flight and Rohit Sharma was nowhere near the pitch of the ball, he came down to the wrong one. But, well bowled from Jack Leach. That is good for confidence and good to get into the series with a top scalp.

  12. Ind 82-1published at 13 overs

Two of India's brightest young talents are in the middle now as Shubman Gill joins Jaiswal.

England have their breakthrough! Lots of damage has already been done though, 80 runs for the first wicket has made a significant dent in England's total.

They now have 11 overs to try and turn the screw.

    Breakthrough!

The tactics pay off as Stokes keeps the field up, encouraging the big shots and Rohit Sharma obliges. He slices one high into the air where Stokes himself takes a smart catch at mid-off. He roars in delight and Jack Leach gives him a telling grin.

Rohit punches his bat in frustration but he smiles at his opening partner as if to say, over to you now, kid.

Jaiswal's half-century has been rather gifted to him by England's spinners I'm afraid.

Tom Hartley might need to have a breather, he is bowling long hops and half-volleys. It has been a tough day for him. He's had no rhythm.

  16. Ind 79-0published at 12 overs

Just as it looks like Tom Hartley has survived the over, he bowls a front foot no-ball.

The extra ball is clipped for a single by Rohit Sharma. Hartley now has 0-51 from six overs. Time for a breather?

  17. Not outpublished at 11.4 overs

    And they waste another.

    Nothing there.

England are all over the place.

  18. England reviewpublished at 11.4 overs

From nowhere, Hartley gets one to turn and bounce sharply past the outside edge of Rohit Sharma.

I'm assuming this is a review for a caught behind - the appeals weren't hugely convincing although it was a stunner of a delivery.

England have already lost one, remember.

Four more off Hartley, and that brings up a remarkable 47-ball half-century for India's latest prodigy.

    Talent.

England have to try and not get downhearted here. After their opening stand of 55 India took three wickets for barely any runs. They have to retain the hope that they can do the same to the home team.
