England have got a total to defend. Great knock from Stokes who seems to pull it out when needed. Backs against the wall? Ben Stokes is your man.

From a position where it could have been all out for 200, England will be reasonably happy.

No wonder Bumrah and Stokes are grinning. That is an absolute beauty to get rid of the England captain.

Stokes' grin will be knowing his bowlers have 23 overs to try to make inroads into India's batting line-up this evening.

    Stokes b Bumrah 70 (Eng 246)

Cleaned up. England are all out for 246.

On a turning pitch, that is a special contribution for the masterful Jasprit Bumrah, who finishes with 2-28.

He nails another cutter that deviates off the pitch and takes out Stokes' off stump.

England's captain shrugs, and smiles as if to say, "What on earth am I expected to do with that?"

  4. Eng 246-9published at 64.1 overs

Edged... and four. Ben Stokes has earned some luck but that's a beauty from Bumrah.

The Stokes knee that was operated on between the World Cup and now looks in fine fettle.

Every time he tried to hit the ball for six in the World Cup he was grimacing but he looks completely at ease here. Good signs.

The crowd erupts as Ben Stokes plays and misses, with Ashwin definitely relishing this contest. He beats him outside off stump and KS Bharat whips off the bails, but Stokes does well to keep his balance.

This is epic. Edge of your seat stuff.

Tossed up delivery from Ashwin and Stokes doesn't get all of it but it still goes for six.

    My word.

Every time you think Stokes can't get much better, he just keeps going.

He launches Ravichandran Ashwin, of all people, back over his head for six.

Jack Leach will hang around with his captain. Can he do it again?

  11. Eng 235-9published at 63 overs

The rare sight of pace, as Jasprit Bumrah returns, and Ben Stokes negotiates the over watchfully before expertly taking a single from the last ball to keep the strike.

The boring views have been brilliant today, by the way. Thanks for your contributions. Given me a much-needed laugh on this dark, rainy morning.

Mark Wood goes playing a bit of a hack across the line. That's a shame, they were just getting on top of India there. There is no real reason for him to do that in my mind.

Ben Stokes is one of the best players in the world at hitting spin out of the ground, leave him to do it.

It is a good little partnership and well played, Mark Wood.

Yeah, you don't need a review for that one.

A handy little cameo from Mark Wood comes to an end as he slog sweeps at Ashwin, misses and loses his off stump. KS Bharat does well to catch the stump in the end, as it somehow flies up out of the ground and towards his helmet.

England are nine down. Ben Stokes will surely go ballistic now.

Ben Stokes is marshalling the tail beautifully here and he's showing lots of aggression after the tea interval. He's trying to drag his team to a total they feel is competitive.

Pitched outside leg. Mark Wood survives and India have no reviews left.

India have one review left, and they use it on Mark Wood.

He's given not out after attempting a reverse sweep to Ravichandran Ashwin, but Rohit Sharma wants another look.
