  1. Eng 49-4published at 19 overs

Ah, Ben Stokes answers my call and bookends the over with scoring shots.

He starts with a flick off the legs for four, then closes with a push into mid-wicket that Patidar retrieves at the boundary.

India scored 875 runs in 228 overs. 3.4 runs an over, the perfect tempo for Indian conditions.

  3. Eng 42-4published at 18 overs

Stokes strikes uppishly for a single off Jadeja, falling clear of Jaiswal at mid-wicket.

Nine runs off the bat since Bairstow's dismissal at the beginning of the 12th over.

  4. Eng 41-4published at 17 overs

Mohammad Siraj comes on to replace Bumrah and sends down a maiden to Joe Root.

His first ball takes a tiny edge, hit the pad and pops up just short of point.

Do you remember that time when Root and Stokes scored double and triple hundreds respectively to beat India and set the record Test chase?

  6. Eng 41-4published at 16 overs

A push into the covers and Stokes runs two off Jadeja.

    Just the 516 to go.

  7. Eng 38-4published at 15 overs

Bumrah scuds a ball past the face of Ben Stokes - he has to arc his back to get out of the way. Moments later the klaxon goes off for a front foot no-ball.

Stokes then steps away again - this time so late that he'd have surely been given out if the ball hit the stumps. Knowing England's fortunes in this match I'm surprised it didn't, instead going just wide.

The India seamer follows up with a wild ball fired down the leg side that runs away for four byes.

I've been a big believer in bazball and I still am. The frustrating thing is they don't seem to realise how good and successful they could be if they adapted to the situation once in a while. No flexibility in approach seems to be an excuse to hide behind poor performances but instead the rest of the cricketing world is laughing at us! Hope there's some soul searching done after this game.

  9. Eng 33-4published at 14 overs

Stokes takes a first ball single to mid-wicket, before Joe Root plays out five Jadeja dot balls.

I am afraid Bazball has been exposed this week. It’s great when it works. The first Test was a pitch that did all sorts so I get Bazball on that pitch but not the last two where the pitches have been absolutely fine to just play with positive intent but more so common sense.

  11. Eng 32-4published at 13 overs

Stokes steps away after there's movement behind Bumrah's arm. The ball goes on to uproot the stumps - the India seamer exchanges words with his opponent but it's with a big smile on his face, the India team are having a great time.

The England skipper then takes three with a shot off his legs - Mohammed Siraj sliding to stop the ball just short of the boundary.

  12. Eng 29-4published at 12 overs

Stokes pushes towards the covers to get off the mark.

England's two great batters are now at the crease - can they pull off a miracle?

(that's a draw, by the way)

The way this match has gone since the start of yesterday's play has been much more in line with my pessimistic expectations prior to the series starting!

    The England captain survives.

Impact was outside the line - smiles around, Jadeja likely knowing it was a bit of a punt, Stokes looking somewhat rueful.

    Stokes gone second ball?

It's another lbw call, Joel Wilson says no but India are very excited and send it upstairs.

    Bairstow lbw b Jadeja 4 (Eng 28-4)

Yep, get those tee times booked.

Bairstow's sorry series continues. He goes to sweep Jadeja, misses and is rapped on the pad. Joel Wilson's finger goes up, Bairstow pauses for a moment to ask his batting partner what he thinks and Root sends him on his way.

Replays show it was umpire's call, hitting the top of off - the right decision not to review.

  18. Eng 28-3published at 11 overs

    That's more like it, Joe.

Lovely, deft shot, opening the face of the bat to guide the ball down to the boundary at backward point.

Bumrah responds by reeling off five dot balls.

This is going to be over quicker than the dog eating a ham sandwich he's nicked off the kitchen counter when you turned your back for a split second.
