I loved that over from Hartley, loved the changes in field. He was dangling the carrot for Gill to hit over the top - but he didn’t take it and played it beautifully. He looks very calm.

Now Ben Stokes makes his move by turning to his big mate Joe Root.

Root made the breakthrough with the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal earlier.

    Can he do it again?

Ben Stokes does well in the covers to stop runs to Shubman Gill on the cut.

It's a maiden from Tom Hartley to just squeeze the pressure.

Ben Stokes stares down at the turf. He must be wondering if there anything he can do to change this. So often he has pulled off the incredible for England. Is there time for one more magic trick?

Just one from Bashir's over here.

    Need 37 runs to win

One of India's coaches applauds above his head as Shubman Gill finds another gap for two.

For so long this morning India tentatively dug themselves into a hole. These two are dragging the hosts out of it with a very positive partnership.

The modern players love boundaries but perhaps they can do it in ones and twos. It's a real test of nerves and temperament.

  7. Ind 152-5published at 49 overs

    Need 40 runs to win

The Indian cheers are drowning out the England fans' songs.

The locals find their voice again as Shubman Gill is roared back for the second after picking a gap.

I just wonder if it’s worth bringing mid on up for a couple of balls. Keep deep mid wicket and see if they can tempt Gill to take on the big shot - they've got to get him out.

  9. Ind 148-5published at 48 overs

    Need 44 runs to win

England have to tell themselves one wicket changes everything. The entrance of Dhruv Jurel has changed the complexion here. India look confident again.

Currently in the Maldives, my wife has been arranging the holiday for months. Just turned to her and said the best thing about being here is being on the same time zone as India. The stare back could take a couple of wickets...

That's my bad. I take full responsibility.

Dhruv Jurel drives Shoaib Bashir for four and there's an eruption of noise from a previously quiet crowd.

Boundaries are proving so hard to come by. Ben Stokes' captaincy has been been very clever to block most options. There hasn't been a boundary from any of India’s batters apart from the openers.

England haven't conceded a boundary in 30 overs!

I like the way Gill is coming down the wicket, not only looking to score but also able to defend from there if need be. Many batters, if they come down the wicket, they are only looking for the big shot.

  15. Ind 140-5published at 46 overs

These two batters have just switched the momentum back over after lunch. The England fans break into a rendition of The Great Escape theme. This would be one of their best rescue acts.

It's not just India vs England. It's also Jurel vs Bashir for the player of the match. Two great finds. What a match.

Shoaib Bashir gets down from his lanky height to sprawl in the dirt and field off his own bowling. His England team-mates applaud the effort. Every run is crucial.

Shubman Gill lets out a wild scream to send back his batting partner as Jurel sets off for a single.

Given how something ALWAYS happens when he bowls, perhaps it's time for Stokes to have a couple of overs?

Win or lose. One thing England do now is entertain. Pushed Australia all the way. This series we have pushed India all the way. Stokes and McCullum know how to put a smile and stress people out at the same time!
