I remember the criticism Paul Pogba used to get at Man United and from one pundit in particular it was on a weekly basis. It seems the players that come with the biggest price tags receive the most criticism (Pogba, Havertz, Nunez, Antony). It’s not their fault the club signed them for so much, and if anything it’s the club that recruited them that should receive the abuse. Pogba didn’t live up to his price tag, but he’d have needed to be absolutely faultless and won countless trophies for him to have been seen as worth the money. You rarely see the same criticism towards homegrown players and players with a smaller price tag…or if your name rhymes with Stack Brealish.

England manager Sarina Wiegman on England players being vocal: “I am absolutely very proud. It shows a lot about the togetherness that you are not alone and sharing these experiences within the team and then the wider world you can see people resonate with you. It’s really powerful.

"We have that platform because we are performing at the highest level. That is what I always say. If you perform at the highest level so much can come from that. We want to play football, the talent brings the team here but we want to enjoy it too.”

Thanks Mo. An injury crisis meant Jurgen Klopp once started Lucas Leiva at centre-back in a League Cup final.

I'm not sure if we can bring up past players, but Lucas Leiva at Liverpool through the messy 2009-2011 campaigns. Bore the brunt of the fans ire and was unfairly scapegoated when the team as a whole was simply atrocious. He stuck at it though and eventually became a key player. We loved Lucas to bits at the end, I'm sure my fellow Reds will agree.

  7. 'We have taken a lot of steps forward'published at 12:32 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

Portugal v England (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England manager Sarina Wiegman on selling out Wembley stadium: "We talk about development a lot of course and we have taken a lot of steps forward but we also need to take a lot more steps forward. I think that countries are all in different stages of their development but I think we're lucky we're still taking those steps.

"Portugal are in another stage of their development with finding out the stadiums. A good thing is that we sold out the stadium quite quickly, which is going to be full tomorrow and hopefully, that helps this country too when we play a good game and they can move forward, which is exciting as a whole for women's football."

I have a theory. If all of Lukaku's moves had been free (or even just slightly cheaper) transfers, we'd be calling him one of the best in the business.

I'm going to go with Lukaku. Over 300 goals in 3 different countries, 85 international goals yet he's always the scapegoat and I'm a Chelsea supporter (ducks for cover).

Portugal v England (Fri, 19:45 GMT)

    England

England manager Sarina Wiegman on who to expect to play in midfield: "We have been puzzling all of the time, over the last four friendly games of course, we wanted to see lots of players and combinations because we always think in scenarios of who's available and who's not available and who's performing at club level. We're watching games a lot, so we know what the next step could be, which we're trying out."

Ashley Young at Everton. He always seems to get a groan from us fans but this season especially he has been one of most consistent players. I think it's partly that he was the symbol of Dyche's defensiveness where now Moyes is using him when needed to manage the same and he's having a great impact.

England manager Sarina Wiegman on calling up Lucy Parker: "We think she is a really talented player who has been unlucky with injuries. Despite those injuries with what we have seen we think she's one of the best ones to bring in."

    Fair play to him.

He must be getting so much flak right now.

And I'm glad Anon brought up Kai Havertz. Another player who has received a huge amount of criticism which, this season, has sadly often crossed the line.

    England

England manager Sarina Wiegman on Chloe Kelly returning to the squad: "She impressed in her half an hour but she needed more game time but at the end of the day it's about the quality, which is what I should of probably expressed last week. Of course we know she brings quality and she's fit. And now with that injury [Beth Mead and [Lotte Wubben-Moy], I thought it would be good for the team, and of course her, to bring her in."

Most unfair criticism on an Arsenal player from is Kai Havertz. Now he is injured, everyone is missing him and all of a sudden saying our title chances are gone - ie admitting that if he was around we are a better team. Supporters need to start supporting players through thick and thin!!!

    England

England manager Sarina Wiegman on the the squad settling in: "It's really nice here. The pitch is very nice, and it's on-site, which makes it very close. There are a lot of different generations in the team but that isn't a new thing. I think that we had that last season too."

  20. Alexander-Arnold knew he was coming off - Slotpublished at 12:00 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

Man City v Liverpool (Sun, 16:30 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot on substituting Trent Alexander-Arnold after the right-back had just scored: "We already spoke about this a week ago. With these five games he already knows how many minutes he would make. That was in a situation where Conor [Bradley] was available as well; now, maybe, we have to adjust our plan. But I said to him you know why I take you out don't you? And he said 'yeah, we spoke about it'.

"But of course, a player has adrenaline - and he'd just scored. It was a better moment than against Wolves when he lost the ball before I took him off, so he's improving!"
