Re: Josh at 0831. We'd all be very happy for there to be a backdated rule that finishing 4th the previous season doesn't make your Champions of Europe. Liverpool would be stripped of their last two European titles.....

In response to Josh from Liverpool's comment about finishing 4th in your league and winning the champions league next season doesn't make you champions, Liverpool won the Champions League in 2018-19 and came 4th the season before... #bbcfootball

  4. Man City looked 'scared' and 'vulnernable' last nightpublished at 08:51 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

FT: Real Madrid 3-1 Man City (agg: 6-3)

    Paul Robinson
Former Blackburn goalkeeper on Football Daily podcast

The difference in the two sides was so obvious to see. Real Madrid has not improved that much that they have gone above Man City, it's more how far Man City have actually dropped off. There's a lack of self-belief in that side. And I use the word vulnerable because that's what they look like in defence.

Every single time Real Madrid got the ball, Man City looked scared. There are holes in that Man City defence; they were pulled apart, and there was no communication or confidence. It's certainly a different Manchester City team that played in the Champions League last year.

Guys, the Cup Winners Cup definitely did, I've actually looked this one up before posting for once!

Fiorentina beat Rangers in 1961, 2-0 in Glasgow in the first leg and 2-1 in Florence in the second.

The Uefa Cup had two legs in the final for yonks and yes, Spurs did win it that way. Twice in fact.

Not sure if the CWC had 2 legged finals but I think the UEFA Cup final was decided over 2 legs for quite a few years. Didn't Spurs win it that way?

  7. What else to look out for in the Champions League draw?published at 08:42 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

As well as finding out which sides they will face in the last 16, the three remaining English clubs - Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa - will also know which half of the draw they will be placed in.

The top half of the draw includes Paris St-Germain, Club Brugge, Real Madrid and PSV Eindhoven, while Feyenoord, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Benfica lie in wait in the bottom half.

It was my tactical stubbornness, Adam. I've led us all into a chat about Champions League formats and I don't know how to get out.

Also, I won't take this Craig slander. The poor guy has been writing all the informative posts. You know, the ones that are actually useful.

The strange hot takes and two-legged final suggestions are from sleep-deprived me (Joe).

  10. Who can Liverpool, Arsenal & Villa face in last 16?published at 08:34 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

    Media caption,

BBC Sport's Sam Harris explains the new Champions League format for the 2024-25 season.

The Premier League teams that made it directly through to the last 16 of the Champions League already had an idea which teams they would face in the knockout stages.

The play-off round has simply whittled down a possible four opponents into two:

Liverpool -the league phase winners will play either Paris St-Germain or Benfica

Arsenal -Mikel Arteta's side face Dutch opposition after being grouped with either PSV Eindhoven or Feyenoord

Aston Villa - it's either Borussia Dortmund or Club Brugge for Unai Emery's men.

I watched my team top the group stage and even if we go on to win it this season I still think this new format is bizarre. Every game felt like a 1 off friendly against randomised teams across Europe, the teams you play against don’t play against the same teams you do, and you can finish as low as 24th in the table but still theoretically win the competition. Who asked for this? Just have the winner of each league qualify, have 2 legged ties until the final and go back to calling it the European Cup. Finishing 4th in your league then winning the Champions League the following season does not make you champions of Europe. Its silly.

  12. No other words but ouch...published at 08:29 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

Did you catch Real Madrid's second goal, where Kylian Mbappe sent Josko Gvardiol?

    Don't dive in Josko!

  13. Postpublished at 08:26 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

Was wondering why the post at 08:16 wasn't doing too well and then I realised that the European Cup never had two-legged finals. Was thinking of the Cup Winners Cup, and even then Uefa quickly scrapped the idea after one attempt in the sixties.

More competent live texters should be arriving soon.

  14. Dortmund shut out Sporting to seal last-16 placepublished at 08:23 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Sporting (agg 3-0)

Borussia Dortmund clinched their spot in the Champions League last 16 after a goalless draw against Sporting in the second leg of their knockout play-off tie.

The return leg was a formality after the German side posted a comprehensive 3-0 victory in Lisbon last week.

Dortmund were dominant and had the chance to break the deadlock when they won a penalty in the second half after Rui Silva's challenge on Adeyemi, but the Sporting goalkeeper made amends by keeping out Guirassy's spot-kick.

The hosts, who lost last season's final to Real Madrid at Wembley, will face Aston Villa or Lille in the two-legged last-16 tie next month.

  15. Stunning PSG put seven past Brestpublished at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

    PSG 7-0 Brest (agg 10-0)

Paris St-Germain completed a thumping victory over Brest that set up a last-16 Champions League tie against either Liverpool or Barcelona.

Luis Enrique's side put seven past their Ligue 1 rivals in front of their home fans to seal a 10-0 win on aggregate.

Bradley Barcola extended their advantage with a neat near-post effort and his fellow winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia tapped in PSG's second of the evening before the break.

Portugal midfielder Vitinha curled a low shot into the right corner from 18 yards just before the hour mark as PSG moved up through the gears.

Goncalo Ramos teed up fellow substitute Desire Doue for their fourth, the impressive Nuno Mendes slid in Achraf Hakimi's teasing ball for a fifth, Ramos' deft finish brought a sixth and teenager Senny Mayulu rounded off the scoring with four minutes left.

  16. PSV upset Juve to set up possible Arsenal tiepublished at 08:17 Greenwich Mean Time 20 February

    PSV 3-1 Juventus (agg 4-3)

    Adam Millington
    BBC Sport journalist

PSV Eindhoven pulled off arguably the biggest shock of the Champions League knockout play-offs by dumping out two-time European champions Juventus.

Ryan Flamingo scored an extra-time winner as the Dutch champions produced a superb performance to overturn a one-goal first-leg deficit and book a spot in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Ivan Perisic and Ismael Saibari netted either side of a stunning Timothy Weah strike to make it 3-3 on aggregate in normal time before Flamingo sealed victory.

PSV's progression means they will face either Arsenal or Inter Milan in the last 16.

Well, the teams that qualified directly for the last 16 have already been paired up with two teams from the play-off round.
