And that is where we say au revoir to Yorkshire. What a weekend it has been. Mark Cavendish's race run before it had really begun and one of the most extraordinary second stages I've ever seen.

But the Tour's visit to England doesn't stop here. We've got a terrific 155km stage into London on Monday. which will finish on The Mall and is designed to be a sprint finish.

And then there will be 18 more stages as the race moves into France from Tuesday. The riders will tackle the Alps and Pyrenees mountains on the way to Paris for crowning of the champion on 27 July.

We will have live text and radio commentary of every stage to Paris, so be sure to stay with us.

Thanks for your texts and tweets. I'm off to see if there's anything left of the party in Silsden but I'll be back at 11:30 on Monday to take you to London.

Slovakia's Peter Sagan, who finished stage two in fourth and took the green points jersey: "I'm happy because I stayed close to the front. Today was a very hard stage, everyone was watching me and how I moved, then I was attacked by another rider. The stage was a little bit crazy but it was OK. I took the green jersey which is good."

Team Sky's Geraint Thomas, who was working hard at the front of the peloton for much of the final 60km: "That was hard. It was steep up and down and once it eased up, I was able to take a bit of control and keep Froome out of trouble. It was great racing though and Jenkin Road made it interesting. All the General Classification guys were testing each other out."

Team Sky's British rider Chris Froome, who finished in the group two seconds behind Nibali: "It was really tough racing - but the crowds were incredible, especially up Holme Moss. I had goose bumps going up.

"For me it was about staying out of trouble and avoiding major issues or big splits."

"Vincenzo Nibali took the victory from under the noses of guys like Peter Sagan. Sagan was the guy who we said, if he was near the front, it would be his to lose. Well, he lost it big style - maybe he was too flamboyant in the final climb. All the action was in the descent into Sheffield, Nibali took it from everyone."

And as Nibali puts on his yellow jersey, Marcel Kittel, who wore it through stage two, crosses the finish line. Twenty minutes have passed since Nibali did likewise. Kittel is in a decent-sized group and he won't worry too much. He needs to save his energy for bigger days for him, such as Monday's third stage from Cambridge to London.

Here are the presentations. First up is stage winner Vincenzo Nibali who gets a lovely bunch of flowers for his efforts. He briefly disappears but returns for another bunch of sunflowers and then gets to put on the yellow jersey - it is the first time he has worn the coveted maillot juane.

Team Sky will be pretty happy with their opening weekend's effort. The plan was to get through the first two stages unscathed and they've done that. And defending champion Chris Froome even gave the home fans something to cheer with his attack on Jenkin Road.

"Everything about this stage - the terrain, the riders - lived up to expectation. There won't be anyone out there on the roads left disappointed."

The big boys aren't supposed to come out and play this early in the Tour de France. The fact they have is testament to the challenging route set out by the race organisers and hats off to them. It has been a truly magnificent opening weekend for the race.

That was one sensational finish to a sensational stage. And a great celebration, pointing to the big Italian flag on his chest as he crossed the line. I'll wait for the official timings but it looked like BMC's Greg van Avermaet in second.

Nibali is looking good here. He's going to win the stage and take the yellow jersey. But Froome is chasing, has he left it too late?

  17. Postpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 6 July 2014

There are no more than 20 riders left in this leading group. Everyone is looking at each other. Who is going to show first - it's Vincenzo Nibali. And he's got a few metres gap and it's growing. Is this the race-winning move by the Italian national champion? He goes under the Flamme Rouge on his own. 1km to go.

Sagan is easily the fastest sprinter in this leading group and could sit back and wait for the sprint. But he's determined to race this from a long way out. Jakob Fuglsang goes on the attack and takes a BMC Racing rider with him but the break is quickly closed down. 2km to go.

We are straight onto the descent and Sagan is leading the way. Has he gone too early? There's still 3.5km to go.
