"The riders have to keep calm now. There's an awful lot of racing to come.

"Some of these riders will be extremely apprehensive about, not only the roads they've got to go up, but mainly the ones they've got to go down.

"There's a tricky descent coming up which has caught a few unaware in recent years."

Tom Jelte Slagter is first over Midhopestones, closely followed by Garmin-Sharp team-mate Andrew Talansky, who was the winner of the Tour de France warm-up race the Criterium du Dauphine.

That was a category three climb, so two points for Dutch rider Slagter but he's not in it for the points today. It's all about being in the right position at the bottom of climbs to have the best ride up and at the top of the hill, to ensure a straightforward descent. Just three categorised climbs and around 30km remaining.

Geraint Thomas did hint yesterday that Froome may fancy this finish today, given the gradient on the final climb reaches 33% at one point. Could Alberto Contador (pictured) fancy it? He likes steep climbs and is renowned for his explosiveness on climbs. This should be a terrific finish.

News on Kittel. It may well be the last time I mention his name until the finish as he is more than five minutes behind the leading bunch. Tony Martin is leading the bunch up a gradient of 12%. Geraint Thomas is up near the front.

This kind of terrain suits the Welshman, although his key role is to keep Team Sky team-mate Chris Froome out of trouble.

With just 35km remaining, the teams looking to contest the finish are starting to position their key riders. Movistar are riding for team leader Alejandro Valverde. Orica GreenEdge are looking to propel Simon Gerrans to victory. They turn right at Langsett Reservoir and catch the five between them and Kadri.

Cote de Midhopestones is 2.2km at 6.1% and Kadri is caught after 165km out front.

    It's game on now.

"There are tons of tents in the field to the left of the road near Woodhead. Never mind a mini Glastonbury - it looks like the full monty. Incredible. It would be no exaggeration to say that this has been the best Grand Depart ever."

The smile has gone off the face of Marcel Kittel. I think he found Holme Moss tough.

The five chasers are within 15 seconds of Kadri but the bad news for those six is that the peloton is almost upon them. This is all coming back together as we get within sight of Cote de Midhopestones.

Rob Hatch tells us that the peloton is zipping along at almost 50mph as it whizzes through the northern edge of the Peak District National Park. "That's 5mph slower than Cav and I were doing on a training run a little while ago," says Rob Hayles.

It's sticky bottle time at the back of the peloton as the domestiques drop back to get the drinks in. They are called sticky bottles because as the rider takes the bottle from the car, the man passing it keeps hold for a few seconds and depresses the accelerator, thus giving his man a little help up the incline.

It's frowned upon by race officials who will honk their car horn if they see it happening. But, like diving in football, it happens.

The group that is chasing Kadri has grown to five. They are Tony Martin (OPQS), Marcus Burghardt (BMC), Nicolas Edet (Cofidis), Cyril Gautier and Thomas Voeckler (Europcar) as they head into the final 50km of today's stage. They are 45 seconds behind the leader as they cross the Yorkshire border for a brief jaunt through Derbyshire.

Interesting to see multiple world time trial champion Tony Martin picking up a point on the climb. He is an Omega Pharma - Quick-Step team-mate of Mark Cavendish and with Cav out of the race, maybe he has been given licence to have fun today.

Kadri leads Voeckler and Edet by 23 seconds with the Team Sky-led peloton a further minute or so further back. The yellow jersey is dropping back and is now three minutes behind the race leader.

Kittel will be trying to enjoy his last couple of hours in yellow.

Has Voeckler run out of gas? Suddenly Kadri is on his own and he is reaching the summit of Cote de Holme Moss on his own. Nicolas Edet of Cofidis, who broke clear from the peloton, sprints past Voeckler with the summit in sight to take three points. Voeckler is third.

Vasil Kiryienka of Belarus is leading the Team Sky train, Geraint Thomas in his wheel. No drama in the peloton. But Voeckler is chasing the five points on offer for the first over the top of Holme Moss.

A quick shot of Kittel who is off his bike, getting a new back wheel. He's getting plenty of encouragement as he remounts and sets off again. Richie Porte is back with the peloton.

Kadri is yet to be joined by his compatriot Voeckler but the Europcar rider is out of his saddle and dancing on his pedals and has his compatriot in his sights. The crowd is going bananas on Holme Moss.

Voeckler is loving this and is on Kadri's wheel, where he sits down to gather himself.

And here goes Tommy Voeckler - the French Europcar rider jumps off the front of the peloton and sets off in pursuit of Blel Kadri, who is now out on his own.

Team Sky are on the front of the peloton, setting the tempo as they tend to do on the bigger climbs.

And it's goodbye to the yellow jersey as Marcel Kittel finds the pace too high and starts to go backwards.

Richie Porte is more than one minute behind the peloton and the Australian's team-mates are on the front, with Froome handily placed as they hit the bottom of Holme Moss. It's a 4.7km ascent with an average gradient of 7%.

Blel Kadri has tried to break clear of his fellow escapees as they are eaten by the peloton. Lemoine goes with Kadri but their advantage is down to a handful of seconds.

Sky have sacrificed Danny Pate and Bernie Eisel to drop back and help Porte. It's all getting a little chaotic.
