    45km to go

The peloton has woken up. That 15-minute gap behind the breakaway has shrunk to 13 minutes.

The group of chasers in the middle are three minutes behind though, so don't rule those guys out of a late charge.

We heard from Welshman Geraint Thomas earlier. He and Sky team-mate Luke Rowe will have events later this evening on their mind.

Wales play Portugal in a Euro 2016 semi-final at 20:00 BST.

The quicker you get finished boys, the quicker you can be on a bar stool dressed as a dragon.

  8. Sky thinking...published at 14:28 British Summer Time 6 July 2016

Team Sky do not seem too concerned about the almost 15-minute gap to the breakaway.

Chris Froome is currently level with Greg van Avermaet, who is out in front, in the GC - but as it stands there will be a pretty decent gap...

We're starting to hit the juicy meat of this beef burger that is stage five.

The climbs are coming thick and fast we delve deeper into the Central Massif region.

We've less than 60km to go, but four category climbs to come. Are any of them going to make the breakaway blow enough to cede the lead?

  11. Coquard's revengepublished at 14:20 British Summer Time 6 July 2016

    60km to go

It may be scant consolation, but Bryan Coquard beats Marcel Kittel to the line for the intermediate sprint to exact some form of revenge for yesterday's narrowest of narrow defeats at the end of yesterday's stage.

They were the men at the front of the peloton - so the points towards the green jersey tally are minimal.

Alex Woolcock: There's a bilingual song at no.40 in the charts at the moment. 'Tilted' by Christine and the Queens

No Parlez: On the bilingual music front, how about charity shop perennial LP No Parlez by Paul Young?

That peloton will have to start getting a move on if any of them fancy a stage win today.

Team Sky's Geraint Thomas bruised ribs in a fall on the opening stage, he suggested he was feeling the pain when he spoke last night.

"The final couple of hours was tough. It was always up and down at a decent pace. And that run-in certainly wasn't straight forward.

"When you see Chris Froome bouncing off people and wobbling, your heart is in your mouth. Fortunately we kept him safe. The main thing is keeping him calm because he always wants to be right at the front. You burn a lot of energy doing that, so it's a fine balance.

"My ribs are still sore. Out of the saddle I can feel them and when I'm breathing hard."

The three at the front get lively as they approach the finish of a category three climb at Cote du Puy Saint Mary.

It's Thomas de Gendt who beats fellow Belgian Greg van Avermaet and Ukranian Andriy Krivko to the line.

There's an intermediate sprint straight up too.
