Dominic: What happened to the unwritten (etiquette) rules of the peloton why did they not stop racing?

John: Simple - they should give Froome & Porte the same time as Mollema.

Andy: surely they must stop the race when the leader crosses the line and award the gaps as they were then otherwise not fair

Any other day, Adam Yates taking possession of the yellow jersey would be huge news.

But the Briton has had his moment swept away by farce.

We still don't know if the result will stand and if in fact Yates is the GC leader.

This is the sight of the yellow jersey wearer on the Tour de France running up Mont Ventoux.

It will forever be one of the most remarkable images in sport.

Chris Johnson: The commissaires HAVE to do something. An absolute shambles. Other riders should have waited and neutralized finish though?

giles brooks: Makes the TDF appear farcical!

Sejanus: Tdf reduced to whacky races. If commissaires don't neutralise finish it's become a farce

  11. No yellow jersey presentation... yetpublished at 16:30 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

Thomas de Gendt, who has achieved a remarkable stage win today, has been presented with his prize on stage.

No yellow jersey presentation yet... I imagine there are many Le Tour officials quickly trying to work out what on earth they are doing.

  12. 'That can't stand'published at 16:27 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

More from Richie Porte: "That can't stand. It can't happen like that. There has to be some sort of discretion. If you can't control the crowds what can you control? It's not the motorbike - the crowd are in your face the whole time, pushing riders."

  13. 'They have to do something'published at 16:26 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

Richie Porte on the crash: "I went straight over the top of the bike. It was a mess. The guys went straight into me. I don't know what they're going to do - they have to do something because it's not fair."

Richie Porte has just been speaking to the media. He's not happy.

I've jotted it down - with you in a second...

  15. 'A complete mess'published at 16:22 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

It has implications for everyone. It could happen to any rider from any team. Could they giver Froome the same time as the guys he was with or the group he left behind? It’s a complete mess. Thankfully it's not my job to make the decisions.

The issue of fans getting too close to the action has been a nuisance so far in this Tour.

Today it became an all-out problem.

The motorbike colliding with a spectator has caused chaos.

  18. Yellow jersey - Froome provisionally sixthpublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

Here are the yellow jersey standings after that farce.

It's all extremely provisional - but as it stands Adam Yates leads the Tour de France and Froome is sixth.

So, the rule of everyone being given the same time in the last 3km - even if they fall - does not count on mountain finishes.

Tour de France officials could yet decide they need to intervene.

Bauke Mollema gained 1min 40secs on Chris Froome amid all that madness.

He was 56secs behind Froome - so the Briton loses the yellow jersey.

Just trying to work out who the new GC leader is - it could be Adam Yates.
