Rafal Majka may have dropped Reichenbach, but Jarlinson Pantana has joined the Pole at the lead of the race.

Pantano goes in front and waves a slightly frustrated elbow, suggesting he wants Majka to do a bit of work. Majka obliges and lets the Colombian sit in his slipstream.

Chris Froome will need to buy Wout Poels a Solero later. Romain Bardet was desperate to reach the top of the climb by himself, so he could attempt to pull away on the descent, but Poels times everything perfectly to catch the Frenchman in the nick of time.

    10.2km to go

At the front of the race, Rafal Majka has dropped Sebastien Reichenbach, who has tumbled well off the pace on the descent.

    10.8km to go

Romain Bardet has got seven seconds on the yellow jersey group. Wout Poels is made of granite though and is not letting him launch off.

Bardet drops his sunglasses while looking over his shoulder.

    12.3km to go

It's Wout Poels' job to make sure Romain Bardet doesn't escape too far from Team Sky's clutches.

Poels doesn't look too concerned though, as he takes a swig of a drink.

    13.8km to go

Oh here goes Romain Bardet from the front of the yellow jersey group - the Frenchman pulling away. He is 4mins 4secs down on Chris Froome in the yellow jersey chase.

    Bardet might be getting away.

That flare seemed to be let off somewhere between stage leader Rafal Majka and the chasers - Jarlinson Pantano and Sebastien Reichenbach had to chug their way through the smoke on a narrow stretch.

This is all the bike riders need...there's a flare being set off at the side of the road.

The riders can't really see through it, with the issues we've already seen in this years Tour de France, this is ridiculous.

    15.5km to go

The yellow jersey group zig-zag through the hairpins, swirling up into the heavens.

It looks gorgeous from the aerial view - like a lush, green large intestine laid out on a mountain.

That ended up sounding less gorgeous than I intended.

    16.2km to go

Sebastien Reichenbach has dropped the chase group and is hunting down Pantano. The Swiss could well have the stage win on his mind.

The gap to the yellow jersey group is down to 5mins 24secs.

    16.6km to go

With 2.8km to the top of this climb to go, Rafal Majka pulls away from Jarlinson Pantano to lead the stage by himself, crawling through the snaking pass up Grand Colombier.

He'll pick up another 10 points towards his polka dot tally if he's the first man up there.

  12. Postpublished at 16:07 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

    17km to go

Chris Froome has Team Sky buddies Wout Poels and Mikel Nieve for company in the yellow jersey group. It's up to that pair to see him safely over this final climb.

Nairo Quintana hasn't been at his best.

He needs to find his form and his fitness very quickly.

He still has a chance, but he could be in trouble by the end of the day.

    17.4km to go

Is today the day Nairo Quintana tries to claw back time on Chris Froome in the yellow jersey?

He's looked out of sorts so far on the Tour, drifting to fourth place and 2mins 59secs behind Froome.

Is he ill? There are rumours that he is-  but he's in the group with the favourites as it stands and is welcome to launch an attack up Grand Colombier, should he fancy it.

It's still Astana driving on the yellow jersey group, which is now 6mins 30secs off the front of the race.

And, speaking of the front of the race, Rafal Majka has broken away from Jarlinson Pantano

    20,2km to go

The yellow jersey group crosses the finish line to instigate this lap before the end of this stage.

A few moments later, Geraint Thomas comes over the line - he's fallen off the group somewhere, possibly because of a mechanical.

But Team Sky's numbers have diminished around Chris Froome, with Henao dropped earlier.

I've been hearing that Rob Hayles, former Great Britain cyclist, enjoys a nap.

What I'm also learning is that he can fall asleep pretty much anywhere - particularly under desks.

Fortunately he woke up in time to perform BBC Radio 5 live commentary obligations - you can listen to him and Rob Hatch by clicking the audio button at the top of the page.
