Contador, Landa lead by 48 seconds

Chris Froome now only has one team-mate - Mikel Nieve - around him in the main group, although he does have the trump card of Mikel Landa up the road.

AG2R looking very strong in support of Romain Bardet - they have four riders including Bardet up the front.

  3. Contador and Landa attackpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 14 July 2017

The two Spaniards Alberto Contador and Mikel Landa have left Alessandro de Marchi behind and are now out in front by themselves on the Col d'Agnes.

Behind, Nairo Quintana has popped off the front of the peloton, joined by team-mate Carlos Betancur, trying to claw back the time he's lost on GC so far.

By the way, Landa got a bit of a dressing down by Team Sky sporting director Nicolas Portal for leaving Froome behind on the final climb yesterday.

It looks like they made up later...

First real sighting of the yellow jersey so far today - he may have no team-mates by Fabio Aru doesn't seem to need them, the Italian looks very strong.

Ireland's Dan Martin is on his wheel, followed by Chris Froome.

The overall leaders all staying together. For now.

  5. Postpublished at 14:42 British Summer Time 14 July 2017

The leaders are speeding down the descent after the first climb of the day, but it's not long before the second brute.

    It's the category one Col D'Agnes - 10km long and a 8.2% average gradient.

  6. Postpublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 14 July 2017

So there are plenty of races within the race today - most notably Warren Barguil's attack in search of more points in the polka-dot jersey mountains classification.

  7. Rolland droppedpublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 14 July 2017

After that brief foray off the front, Pierre Rolland is now in a lot of trouble, way down the standings surrounded by the sprinters and other riders now renowned for their climbing.

A day of survival beckons for the Frenchman and many others on this brutal stage.

De Marchi goes over the top of the Col de Latrape by himself, taking the 10 points on offer.

Barguil does grab the eight points for second, closely followed by Contador and Landa - those three will likely catch De Marchi soon.

  10. Contador attackspublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 14 July 2017

The two-time former champion Alberto Contador gets up and dances on the pedals, trying to bridge to Barguil.

And Sky's Mikel Landa goes with him too! Aggressive stuff from the British team early on, looking to help out Chris Froome later.

Landa is seventh overall, though - surely the rest of the top 10 won't let him get too far up the road.

    De Marchi solo out front

The race is absolutely splintering apart on the Col de Latrape.

It's a 5.6km-long climb at an average gradient of 7.3% and it's putting a lot of riders in trouble.

Not so Warren Barguil. The polka-dot jersey wearer attacks again and tries to bridge to De Marchi.

Looks like the Italian will take the maximum points at the top of this climb but Barguil could well grab second.

Michael Valgren is the latest Astana rider to slip right down towards the back of the main group and looks about to fall off it.

Is Fabio Aru going to have any team-mates left tomorrow?

  13. De Marchi goes solopublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 14 July 2017

BMC's Alessandro de Marchi has left Philippe Gilbert and Sylvain Chavanel behind.

The Italian has an advantage of 43 seconds over the yellow jersey group.

Can't see him staying away all day.

  14. Fuglsang droppedpublished at 14:28 British Summer Time 14 July 2017

After those fractures sustained on stage 11, it was remarkable that Jakob Fuglsang started and finished yesterday's stage, losing 27 minutes in the process.

It's now perhaps a bit silly that the Dane started today. He's been off the back of the peloton almost from the start and now has team-mate Andrey Grivko with him.

At this rate, they won't make the time cut today. Race leader Fabio Aru's team are being decimated.

  15. Postpublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 14 July 2017

For obvious reasons, a lot of the talk is if French riders can win on Bastille Day, but this date has been a triumphant one for Chris Froome in the past.

The Team Sky leader won on Ventoux on 14 July 2013, en route to his first Tour de France title.

He then won on La Pierre St Martin on 14 July 2015, en route to his second Tour title.

I was on La Pierre St Martin that day - it was only stage 10 of that Tour but Froome's performance was so imperious that everyone looking on had little doubt he would win that Tour.

A stark contrast to yesterday. How the Briton would love to hit back with his third Bastille Day win today.

Three riders lead by 40 seconds

As expected, just three riders is proving to not be enough to stave off the peloton, who have almost halved the advantage.

Gilbert, De Marchi and Chavanel now lead by just 40 seconds.

Gilbert, De Marchi and Chavanel still out front - they've got a lead of 1'07'' over the peloton.

There are a couple of groups scattered over the road - Pavel Poljanski (Bora) and Lilian Calmejane (Direct Energie) are somewhere in the middle, while Pierre Rolland (Cannondale-Drapac) is trying to make a dash off the front.

There's a more established group about 30 seconds behind the front three.

  20. Vichot abandonspublished at 14:08 British Summer Time 14 July 2017

Yet more bad news for the FDJ team as French rider Arthur Vichot withdraws from the race.

They are down to just four riders now after that disastrous stage nine where Arnaud Demare missed the time cut alongside Mickael Delage, Jacopo Guarnieri and Ignatas Konovalovas.
