Swiss time trial champion Stefan Kung is out on course.

The BMC man was one of the favourites for the first stage but couldn't topple Geraint Thomas (that feels a very long time ago now).

    Can Kung be king today?

  2. The Daily Painpublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 22 July 2017

The time trial is well under way, although we're still waiting for all the big GC hitters.

While you'll wait - still reading this live text, of course - have a watch of The Daily Pain, brought to you by OJ Borg and Rob Hayles in the Stade Velodrome.

  3. Bauer goes secondpublished at 14:20 British Summer Time 22 July 2017

Excellent time from Quick-Step's Jack Bauer, who edges out Jasha Sutterlin to go second overall.

Still some 41 seconds behind our current leader Maciej Bodnar, mind.

  4. Postpublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 22 July 2017

    Cheers Fletch.

First bit of news to bring you - world time trial champion Tony Martin was just one second down on Bodnar at the first time check.

But the German is flagging now and has just gone through the second check 14 seconds down.

Can the Katusha man muster a big finish?

  5. And it's over to him..published at 14:14 British Summer Time 22 July 2017

OK, been a pleasure steering you through the last few hours. I'm now going to hand over to Jack Skelton to take you through the rest of the day's decisive action.

    Enjoy.

Poland's Maciej Bodnar has just finished in 28 mins, 15 secs - that is 61 seconds quicker than the previous leader, American Taylor Phinney.

It's sunnypublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 22 July 2017

It still looks super hot in Marseille, punishingly so.

The climb towards the end has the riders bobbing from side to side.

With a steep and fast descent as well, I wonder what this course would've been like in the wet.

Just a reminder that Chris Froome is last down the ramp at 16:04 BST.

  9. Bodnar out in frontpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 22 July 2017

BORA-hansgrohe's Maciej Bodnar is now the quickest through the second check point - 51 seconds quicker than American Taylor Phinney.

Having Tony Martin on the course illuminates the stage given he is one of the fancied riders (Froome name-checked him yesterday) but really, it still feels a little to me as though we are still just ticking down to the business end of today.

Just watching Alexander Kristoff finish his time trial - in a pretty modest time. What is striking is the number of bandages and plasters holding him together.

The ravages and rigours of the Tour right there in visual form.

BORA-hansgrohe's Maciej Bodnar is the new fastest through the first time check - 23 seconds quicker than Sky's Vasil Kiryienka and Dane Lars Bak.

Tony Martin is now out on the road.

  13. And here is Tony Martinpublished at 13:55 British Summer Time 22 July 2017

Relaxing. At least, I think he is relaxing. If you don't know, the German is the guy in the white.

And to bring you to bang up to date, he has just started his time trial. he is the world champion and he has the disappointments of Dusseldorf to get over.

How would you kill time before your turn for the time trial?

If I was Chris Froome I'd spend the next hour donning a Terry Thomas disguise and go and let Bardet's tyres down.

Steve Cummings actually went through the second check point in joint second, 41 seconds behind Taylor Phinney.

It is an hour since Luke Rowe was the first to hit the course, another 59 have gone out since then.

107 are still awaiting their turn.

I wouldn't say the Velodrome is packed out just yet, by quite some extent.

Apparently Celine Dion played there on Tuesday. Wonder if the Canadian singer brought the crowds in? Fast turnaround since then, including, apparently, the laying of a tarmac road for the time trial that will be ripped up afterwards.

Tony Martin - the world champion - is nine minutes away from the ramp. He is sat on the floor leaning against a drinks machine. Classy.

Taylor Phinney remains the first through the first checkpoint - Steve Cummings has also been through Palais du Pharo but was 16 seconds behind.

As we watch Cummings approach the top of the climb at the second checkpoint he has clearly lost an awful lot of time.

Sky's Vasil Kiryienka has just gone down the ramp.
