  1. Bahrain-Merida set offpublished at 15:32 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

Vincenzo Nibali's team are 17th squad off today. The Italian 2014 winner has come through the first two stages unscathed and is firmly up there on GC.

Can his team limit losses to keep him in contention throughout this first week before the cobbled stage on Sunday?

  2. AG2R finishpublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

AG2R finish one minute 15 seconds down on leaders BMC.

So Romain Bardet sees his advantage over Chris Froome and Richie Porte eradicated.

But the Frenchman might have expected to be a minute behind after this stage before the Tour started, instead of around 20 seconds.

The French squad might well be OK with that result given the injuries to Tony Gallopin and Silvan Dillier.

The Lip: Don’t forget having yellow and where your riders are in GC dictates where your team car is. Especially important for the cobble stage on Sunday.

  5. Dimension Data set offpublished at 15:22 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

Mark Cavendish's Dimension Data are off.

The Briton himself is a decent team time trial rider but his squad won't be interested in challenging for this stage win.

They'll be looking to save their legs for tomorrow's sprint stage.

  6. 'Good to make up time' - Froomepublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

Team Sky leader Chris Froome, speaking to ITV4: "There are still a lot of good teams to come through but I'm really happy with how the guys rode, It was a strong effort from everyone. It was not good enough to win the stage but I reckon we'll be right up there.

"It's good to make up a bit of time after the crash no stage one. I'm feeling good and looking forward to the next few days."

  7. Sunweb set offpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

Right, after a run of teams that won't trouble the leaderboard too much, here is Sunweb, the team of world time trial champion and GC contender Tom Dumoulin,.

  8. Education First finishpublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

Education First bring six riders to the line and go through about 35 seconds down on leaders BMC.

A very good ride for Rigoberto Uran, who stays ahead of the likes of Chris Froome, Richie Porte and Adam Yates on GC.

Lawson Craddock is still with his Education First team-mates despite riding with a broken scapula. Nails.

  10. BMC into the leadpublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

Oooh. Close in the end but BMC come through just over four seconds quicker than Team Sky to set a new fastest mark of 38 minutes 46 seconds.

That's a terrific ride, making up that time team leader Richie Porte lost in a crash on stage one.

It also potentially puts Olympic champion Greg van Avermaet into the yellow jersey tonight.

BMC are into the final kilometre and look on course to beat Team Sky's mark...

  12. FDJ finishpublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

FDJ finish the course in the slowest time so far of 40 minutes 28 seconds.

Not to bother, they don't have a GC contender. Better to save their legs for sprinter Arnaud Demare, who will target tomorrow's stage.

We're now into a run of teams who won't trouble the stage win.

The likes of Fortuneo-Samsic, Direct Energie, Lotto Soudal and LottoNL-Jumbo are out on the course.

The latter will want a good ride to protect the GC ambitions of Primoz Roglic though.

  14. BMC fastest at second checkpublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

BMC have gone through the second time check six seconds quicker than Team Sky.

  15. 'We rode well' - Thomaspublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

Team Sky's Geraint Thomas, speaking to ITV4: "It was good, we rode it well. I'm a little bit disappointed by my own effort - I didn't get it all out and always seemed to be on the front on the descents, doing short turns. But we rode it well technically and communicated well.

"To beat Mitchelton-Scott is good. We knew we could afford to lose Wout Poels and Luke Rowe but there was no real plan to do it - they just committed and did as well as they could.

On whether he could take the yellow jersey: "There are still a lot of teams to come and BMC are my favourites."

Movistar bring their three leaders - Nairo Quintana, Alejandro Valverde and Mikel Landa - to the line but they finish 49 seconds down on the leading time of Team Sky.

So Chris Froome has made up all but two seconds of his deficit to Valverde and Landa, while Quintana goes even further backwards on the GC.

That's not too serious for Valverde and Landa - who would've expected to have been behind not ahead of Froome after this stage - but it's dreadful for Quintana, compounding his losses on stage one.

FDJ are miles off at the second check - 1'18'' down on Team Sky.

BMC next up, who will give us a far better idea of how good Sky's effort is.

Matt Taggart: It's always so difficult to know whether an early run is good enough, I'm leaning towards BMC today.

Niamh Lewis: Chainy on the left looks so weird on the TTT at the Tour de France. I'll never get used to riding on the opposite side of the road in Europe.

  20. Team Sky go quickestpublished at 14:55 British Summer Time 9 July 2018

Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas drive the remaining five Team Sky riders over the line in the fastest time so far.

They beat the mark of Mitchelton-Scott by just under five seconds, finishing in a time of 38 minutes 50 seconds.

A good day for the British team. BMC are out on the road - can they beat that mark?
