I’m stood by the Team Ineos bus and the staff and riders here sounded like they were happy with how that team time trial went.

It's not done yet but there’s a sense of quiet confidence that their mark of 29 minutes and 18 seconds will be competitive.

It's a case of waiting to see now.

That was close. But Ineos are still in the box seat.

Katusha Alpecin were quicker at the two intermediate time checks but they are five seconds back at the finish.

The Swiss-based team has British time trial champion Alex Dowsett in their squad and he was instrumental in that final push.

The Katusha Alpecin squad is literally summoning up every last ounce of energy as they reach the final few hundred metres.

Can they beat the Ineos time? This looks like it could be close?

  7. 'We always fear that others will go faster'published at 14:46 British Summer Time 7 July 2019

More from defending champion Geraint Thomas: "We got a good speed and we managed to hold onto it. We could have taken some curves faster but that was a minimal loss.

"We’re leading for now but we always fear that others will go faster, like Jumbo-Visma or Quick Step, we’ll see.

"We’ve always been close in the team trial at the Tour de France but we have never won it so far.”

Hold your hats. Katusha-Alpecin have blasted through the first checkpoint three seconds better than Ineos.

Now that is a surprise. Can the Swiss team keep it up? And what does the mean when the big hitters from Mitchelton-Scott, Deceuninck-Quick-Step and Jumbo-Visma get out on the road later?

  9. Movistar in fourthpublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 7 July 2019

Movistar's team of superstars including Nairo Quintana, Alejandro Valverde and Mikel Landa are in.

And they have tipped just over the 30 minute mark, finishing fourth (so far) 45 seconds adrift of the pace-setting Ineos team.

  10. 'We were told we’d lose a minute'published at 14:36 British Summer Time 7 July 2019

The Groupama-FDJ rider who crashed at the last bend was David Gaudu. And team leader Thibaut Pinot seems pretty happy with their day's work overall.

He said:“It’s a nice performance and it’s not a surprise for us. We were told we’d lose a minute but we had prepared for this stage specifically.

"We’re all in good form with a group of riders who are all good team time trialists. Stefan Küng [who won last year in Cholet with BMC] gave us a lot of advice. With this nice result, I’m looking forward to Thursday’s stage on my home soil.”

French team Cofidis are the 12th of 22 teams out. Meaning we are just past the halfway stage.

And so far nobody has bettered the Ineos time of 13 minutes and 59 seconds at the first checkpoint at the Bois de la Cambre.

I may be proved wrong but I don't think Cofidis are going to either.

Now then what can Groupama-FDJ do?

Thibaut Pinot's team are looking good until one of their riders goes crashing in to barriers on the final turn. The French team have still got four riders homes and hosed in 29 minutes and 29 seconds.

That's the second best time and 11 seconds down on Ineos.

The French squad was 8 seconds and 7 seconds behind at the intermediate time checks.

  13. Astana 21 seconds downpublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 7 July 2019

Jakob Fuglsang's Astana team are in but they are 21 seconds slower than Team Ineos.

There'll be reasonably happy with that.

  16. 'Everyone rode strongly'published at 14:12 British Summer Time 7 July 2019

Defending champion Geraint Thomas speaking after his Ineos team averaged 56.5km/h to finish in 29 minutes and 18 seconds: "We wanted to go 57. I think it's alright and we rode very well and communicated well.

I think everyone rode strongly so we can't be too disappointed. Starting early wasn't planned, It was my tumble and Egan [Bernal] was just behind me so we knew we'd have to start early.

I had no issues today (after the crash).

  19. Ineos finish strongpublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 7 July 2019

Team Ineos are done and dusted as defending champion Geraint Thomas leads them over the line.

The time to beat is 29 minutes and 18 seconds.

If Ineos win the time trial today, Gianni Moscon, their highest ranked rider on stage one, in eightieth position will be draped in yellow on Monday.

Wout Poels has dropped off the back of the Ineos train as they approach the finish.

Not overly surprising given the Dutch rider is at his best on the climbs.
