  3. Cavendish in determined moodpublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 28 June 2021

Cyril Barthe crossed the line first at the intermediate sprint.

Then there was what can only be called a soft sprint featuring the likes of Mark Cavendish, Caleb Ewan, Michael Morkoz, Arnuard Demare et al.

Ewan took that, though Cavendish looked a bit peeved about something after opening up in the last 50m. The Briton has a steely and determined look about him.

He's definitely pumped by the prospect of a possible first Tour stage win since 2016 and his 31st overall.

Two Qhubeka-Nexthash riders hit the deck a few minutes back.

American Sean Bennett and South African Nic Dlamini were both fine and back on their saddles almost immediately.

The intermediate sprint is approaching. Will Mark Cavendish bother with this or save himself for later? Ditto for the other main contenders to win today's stage.

Maybe it'll be a half and half, just to stretch his legs without wasting too much energy.

Now ever wondered how those pre-stage interviews go down, that pop up in the quiet moments during the race?

Basically a long line of broadcasters try to grab the riders they'd like to speak to. A bit like a mixed zone at a football ground, although probably with a higher likelihood of success (In pre-covid times obviously).

Nice to get a glimpse of Thomas de Gendt up front in the peloton.

The Belgian is a formidable breakaway rider, if there'd been any hope of one sticking you'd imagine he'd have already launched.

  10. Mission accomplished for Schellingpublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 28 June 2021

Looks like Ide Schelling's time out at the front is over. The Bora-Hansgrohe rider let his fellow breakaway riders press on while he sat up waiting for the main group.

Quite a sensible tactic. He's got the KOM point he was craving and that should help him save his legs.

Cofidis' Jelle Wallays is the man driving that quartet now.

Ide Schelling is off. The Bora-Hansgrohe rider accelerates away in his pursuit of that KOM point and claims it quite comfortably.

Colin: Once saw Marc Marquez come flying off his motorbike at Silverstone to dislocate his shoulder in the warm up. A couple of hours later he rode the whole race and just missed out on the win on the final corner.

Now then the break have reached the first climb of the day, which is just over a mile up the Cote de Cadoudal, which averages out at 6.3%.

After the first couple of hundred metres it's not one where you'll noticeably spot the ramp all the way.

  15. Postpublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 28 June 2021

The peloton is in the feed zone on a slight uphill drag, slowing things down nicely for most of the riders, who are looking to use this stage to conserve energy after Sunday's exertions.

Bit of sunshine on the roads of Brittany at the moment. It's all very pleasant unlike the interchangeable conditions from earlier.

Still rain is forecast for the finish so you'd expect an element of caution later on before fireworks on the home straight.

Still another 10 miles or so until the first climb of the day. A tiddler up the category four Cote de Cadoudal.

  18. 'I'm a few years stronger now'published at 14:00 British Summer Time 28 June 2021

    Caleb EwanImage source, Getty Images

Lotto Soudal rider Caleb Ewan has definitely been buoyed by the prospect of a sprint finish. The Australian is rapido obvs.

"It's going to be quite technical I think in the end, and quite stressful," he said.

"I think everyone's legs are going to be a little bit tired after the first few days. They were pretty hard. And the roads up here are always demanding. I feel like I'm in better shape.

"I'm a few years stronger now, with a few Grand Tours under my belt. Hopefully I'm a bit faster as well, but I feel good. After you take a stage win, the pressure is obviously not completely off, but at least you have one then."

  19. Postpublished at 13:50 British Summer Time 28 June 2021

Up at the head of the race the five-man break is still trundling along just over two minutes ahead of the 175 riders, correction 174 riders, in the peloton.

Matt: I wouldn't be surprised if Geraint's bones just had a discussion along the lines of 'there's no point in being broken, he just rides on anyway'.
