What's this? Geraint Thomas drops back off the main bunch.

Ah rest easy, looks like it is just a bike change, as a very stressed Ineos Grenadiers mechanic jumps out of a team car to give the Welshman a brand new set of wheels.

Looks like he's getting a new pair of sunglasses as well.

    Irrepressible isn't he?

His legs might not have been quite there on stage two to compete with Mathieu van der Poel (but then again whose were) at the finish but there was still a positive for Julian Alaphilippe, despite losing the yellow jersey.

"I’m not disappointed at all. There were stronger riders.

"With this green jersey I’ve now worn every jersey on the Tour de France, and that’s very special. The yellow jersey it’s magic, but also a big responsibility.

"There is a long Tour ahead with many options. For instance, there are many sprints where Mark Cavendish stands a chance."

Geraint Thomas and his posse of Ineos Grenadiers support riders have regained contact.

Geraint Thomas and co have just gone over a rise in the road and the convoy of cars at the rear of the peloton are in sight.

He'll be back in no time at all.

Shouldn't take much out of his legs, he went down on the Criterium recently and brilliantly bridged back to the leaders in the mountains, before maintaining a pace that helped team-mate Richie Porte win.

Meanwhile Tony Martin, who was taken out by a spectator on stage one, also lost time in that crash and is just about reaching the back of the peloton.

Jonathan Castroviejo is the latest Ineos Grenadier to drop back.

The gap has been halved. Geraint Thomas is out of his saddle pulling his bike around. His shoulder looks okay though sure it'll be sore this evening.

It's not like Geraint Thomas to be involved in crashes!

He has fair back catalogue, let's say.

There is some speculation that Geraint Thomas dislocated his shoulder in that crash and then had it popped back in, which is why he appeared to be in agony.

Dylan van Baarle is now back with Luke Rowe, to aid in the attempt to bring Thomas back.

The rain is absolutely teeming down now. Ineos Greandiers have dispatched their road captain Luke Rowe to help Geraint Thomas get back to the main bunch.

  11. Gesink abandonspublished at 13:19 British Summer Time 28 June 2021

Just been told the Jumbo Visma rider was not Steven Krujswijk but Robert Gesink who has been forced to abandon the race.

That could have huge repercussions in the race. Gesink is one of Primoz Roglic's key lieutenants.

Decision time for Ineos Grenadiers. Do they press on and put all their eggs in the Richard Carapaz basket or drop back to help Geraint Thomas?

Apparently Jumbo Visma's Steven Kruijswijk was also affected by that crash.

The Dutch rider finished third at the Tour in 2019 and I think he was able to get back on his bike much quicker than Geraint Thomas.

  14. Postpublished at 13:14 British Summer Time 28 June 2021

There was absolutely nothing happening at all there. It looks like the Welshman just lost concentration and crossed wheels.

He's back on his bike now looking a bit battered and bruised and is a good three minutes behind the peloton.

The rain is really coming down as the peloton sweeps along through Morbihan.

The road surface looks drenched in places.

Australia's Caleb Ewan probably starts any sprint as the favourite at the minute.

But could Mark Cavendish take another stage win after a three-year absence from the race.

The 36-year-old was a late replacement for Sam Bennett in Deceuninck-Quick-Step squad and is already the most successful sprinter in Tour history, with 30 stages to his name.

Could he edge closer to Eddy Merckx's record tally of 34 stage wins later today?

As for Bennett, his boss Patrick Lefevere, does not sound too happy, external with him.

After two pretty leg-sapping uphill finishes in Brittany, I still think the sprinters will be licking their lips.

Hopefully that doesn't lead to anything too dangerous as they jostle for position.

  19. 'It's going to be a stressful day'published at 12:58 British Summer Time 28 June 2021

Sounds like everyone is going to have to pay attention. We all know what happened on stage one.

If Ide Schelling were to snaffle two more points today at Cadoudal and Plumeliau, the Dutchman would wear the polka dot jersey until the end of stage seven in Le Creusot.

Caleb Ewan's Lotto Soudal team on the front of the main bunch holding the break to around two minutes and 40 seconds.
