3.6km to go
Pidcock is just worried about the race for the stage, but the General Classification race is also hotting up. Tadej Pogacar and Geraint Thomas are still with Jonas Vingegaard. Adam Yates is dropping away, so is Romain Bardet
4.km to go
Tom Pidcock's lead is up to 30 seconds over Louis Meintjes at the front of the race, as he battles upwards, pushing through the fans - literally, when one gets a little too close.
Chris Froome is hanging on in third, another 30 seconds back.
4.5km to go
Romain Bardet, who is in second overall, is struggling to keep pace with the yellow jersey bunch.
5km to go
Britain's Tom Pidcock drives on, and on and on and on. He must be able to smell victory by now, and what a win it would be.
The yellow jersey bunch is dwindling. Primoz Roglic is still guiding Jonas Vingegaard upwards and it is just the race leader and the other main contenders left.
5.8km to go
Tom Pidcock is still flying up this hill as he reaches Dutch corner, and hits a wall of noise and fans to go with the intense heat. He's got a lead of more than 20 seconds on Louis Meintjes and 40 seconds on Chris Froome.
The peloton is four minutes and 30 seconds behind Pidcock, and Nairo Quintana has just dropped out of the back of that bunch.
6.5km to go
Jumbo-Visma may not be trying to win this stage, but they are in total control of the yellow jersey bunch. Four of them are at the front of what is left of that group, including race leader Jonas Vingegaard. The other big hitters, Tadej Pogacar, Romain Bardet and Geraint Thomas are still with Vingegaard by the way.
7km to go
British rider Tom Pidcock goes again, and this time Louis Meintjes cannot respond. The gap between the front two grows to 12 seconds. What a win this would be, but it's not in the bag yet.
8km to go
It's going to be one heck of a race to the summit. Louis Meintjes is closing in on Tom Pidcock... but then Pidcock goes again, stretching out another couple of seconds. Chris Froome is struggling to stay within reach of both of them, but he's not been completely dropped yet.
Further down the road, Wout van Aert has bowed out of this chase, his day is done. Jumbo-Visma are still leading the peloton though. They are five minutes behind Pidcock, who is still riding strongly.
9km to go
Two races on the Alpe d'Huez at the moment - Tom Pidcock versus Louis Meintjes and Chris Froome for the stage win, while Jumbo-Visma are setting the pace in the yellow jersey bunch and burning through that group without closing the gap significantly on the Brit, who is putting in one heck of a ride. That could all change very quickly mind you!
10km to go
Actually, Froome and Louis Meintjes are not going to make it you know, there's a gap between all five escapees now and Pidcock still have five minutes and 30 seconds over the yellow jersey peloton, or what is left of it.
10.3km to go
Tom Pidcock gets a gap, but Louis Meintjes and Chris Froome are going to come back across to him. We are through Welsh corner, where Geraint Thomas will get one heck of a welcome shortly.
10.5km to go
The five men at the front are back together again. Chris Froome takes his turn to set the pace ... before Tom Pidcock attacks.
11.2km to go
A little further back down the mountain. Wout van Aert is at the front of the peloton, and the gap has come down to five minutes and 45 seconds.
11.7km to go
Louis Meintjes has taken up the lead at the front of the race, and is keeping up a fierce pace. Chris Froome loses the wheel a little... can he live with this pace. Neilson Powless has already dropped off, so the five-man break has become four...
12.2km to go
Can Chris Froome or Tom Pidcock win this legendary stage? A lot will depend on how badly Jumbo-Visma want it... but the Brits have given themselves a chance.
On the roadside, the crowds are getting thicker and the noise is getting louder...
12.5km to go
The peloton are near the bottom of Alpe d'Huez, and the gap has grown to six minutes and 30 seconds. All the big hitters are near the front of that bunch.
13.5km to go
Giulio Ciccone is leading the way up Alpe d'Huez. Just the 21 switchbacks to go...
13.8km to go
The gap is still over six minutes as the break hits the bottom of Alpe d'Huez. All five of the men in the escape can climb well, so they've got a chance of staying away.
The escapees are: Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo), British duo Chris Froome (Israel-Premier Tech) and Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadier), plus Louis Meintjes (Intermarche-Wanty-Gobert) and Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost).
