    Van Gerwen 4-2 Anderson 7th set: 2-0

Two players have averaged more than 100 and been beaten by Van Gerwen in this tournament. Gary Anderson could become a third. He's in the groove, now, MVG. Another max. He sits on 41 for another break. D16 finishes it. It's looking too easy. He'll throw for 5-2...

    Van Gerwen 4-2 Anderson 7th set: 1-0

The crowd sing for Anderson, but Van Gerwen is relentless, piling on the 24th maximum of the match. MVG misses two at D16, but Anderson is in a different post code. Cleared up. Anderson is averaging 106(!), but could soon be 5-2 down.

    Van Gerwen 4-2 Anderson 6th set: 3-1

You fear for Anderson here. Van Gerwen has begun to hit the doubles to match his heavy scoring. MVg down to a finish first. 161 for a two-set lead. T20 nailed, but a second treble missed. Anderson one 124, but can't find a big number. Van Gerwen back in for double eight. Daylight. Huge, huge moment.

Darren Sheppard: Twenty 180's already. Insane. Record of 33 under major threat. Due a 9 darter too, both threatening one! Cracking entertainment!

Joe Gibney: Twenty 180's before halfway done, and 34 (14 more) would bring us to 700. Surely on (& it's not too easy, we're in a golden age)

    Van Gerwen 3-2 Anderson 6th set: 2-1

Anderson's problem, mind, is that he'll always be chasing. Five T20s for Van Gerwen, jeers when the sixth is pulled low of the red bit. Anderson, who hasn't lost on this stage for three years, missed D6. Van Gerwen to break? Double eight. That's big. He will throw for a 4-2 lead...

    Van Gerwen 3-2 Anderson 6th set: 1-1

If this was a tennis match, we'd say that everything is on serve. Two more holds from Anderson here and we'll be all-square after six. 16, then D16 seals a comfortable one for Van Gerwen.

    Van Gerwen 3-2 Anderson 6th set: 0-1

Van Gerwen, by the way, has won five legs on the spin. His doubling is still inferior to Anderson's, but the Scot's scoring has dipped. Even with the darts, Anderson allows Van Gerwen down to a finish first. 84 the shot. Two at D12. Ooohhh. Pulled low. Anderson on 74. Tops? A vital arrer. Big hold.

    Van Gerwen 3-2 Anderson

How are you doing? Are you lapping it up? It's darts on fast-forward at the moment, two of the fastest flingers in town. Even if it does go the full 13 sets, we should be in the pub before lasties. Anderson will throw first in set six.

  12. Van Gerwen wins the fifth setpublished at 21:10 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2017

    Van Gerwen 3-2 Anderson 5th set: 3-0

Having said that, Van Gerwen has moved into a set-winning position quicker than a hiccup. A few moments ago, Anderson was having a brew backstage, now he's on the verge of being 3-2 down. D10 seals the set for Mighty Mike. He's carved that one up.

    Van Gerwen 2-2 Anderson 5th set: 2-0

The crowd sing for Van Gerwen once more, he responds by putting three in the T20 bed. That's 19 maximums in 22 legs. He's first to a finish, nailing tops for a break. It's not a biggie, the throw says he should win this set anyway.

  15. Postpublished at 21:07 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January 2017

    Van Gerwen 2-2 Anderson 5th set: 1-0

Have we settled into this final now? We sprinted out of the traps, with the third and fourth sets just a notch or two down. The crowd are sitting too. Some have probably gone to the bar. Even an Anderson 180 isn't cheered too loudly. Bullseye missed for a 128 checkout, but MVG misses D4 and D2. Oh, this is ugly. Now the Scot has pulled his darts. MVG survives.

    Van Gerwen 2-2 Anderson 4th set: 3-2

Anderson looking for 3-1. Opens with a 140. No treble to follow, though. Scoring has not been the difference, mind. Anderson is doubling one in two, while MVG is down at one in three. The Scot on 132, MVG on 86. Some big finsihes coming up. Van Gerwen's chance. One at double seven...

Oh yes! Michael van Gerwen breaks back! What was I saying about those doubles?
