Nathan Aspinall 3-0 Michael van Gerwen

A pair of 180s in the leg for Nathan Aspinall. He misses a couple of darts at double 12 but it's no bother, he takes it out on his next visit.

This is more like it from The Asp after a disappointing start to 2024.

Some start from Nathan! I expected nerves, but this is unbelievable, a complete contrast from the Nathan Aspinall in Milton Keynes.

Aspinall lost his Masters semi-final 11-1 to Stephen Bunting on Sunday.

Brilliant from Nathan Aspinall. He's on fire to start this contest.

After hitting the first 180 of the match, he takes out double 16 for an 11-dart break of throw.

Nathan Aspinall 1-0 Michael van Gerwen

Strong opening leg from Nathan Aspinall but having decided against doing for a double double, he gives Michael van Gerwen a sniff with 160 left.

The Dutchman can't convert and Aspinall comes back to mop up. A solid hold.

Here come the players. First up, it's Nathan Aspinall walking out to The Killers' classic Mr Brightside.

The Stockport man makes sure the crowd get into it, leading the singing for the chorus after making it to the stage.

They do but that's nothing compared to how they chant Michael van Gerwen's name to the tune of Seven Nation Army.

We're nearly ready to go and first up tonight, Nathan Aspinall takes on Michael van Gerwen.

The Dutchman's record in the Premier League is unrivalled - last year's victory was a record seventh since the tournament began in 2005 - but both he and Aspinall were knocked out at the quarter-final stage last week in Cardiff.

Aspinall went down 6-4 to home favourite Gerwyn Price, while MVG lost to eventual night one winner Michael Smith 6-5 following a wretched deciding leg.

Michael Smith was angered by whistles from some of the crowd during his semi-final against 17-year-old Luke Littler in Cardiff, but said the teenager was an even bigger draw than the legendary Phil Taylor.

"I actually thought in the semi-final Luke Littler was Welsh," said Smith, the 2023 world champion.

"It's going to be every week, it doesn't matter where it is.

"Everyone's fallen in love with him. He's even bigger than Phil Taylor who won 16 world titles, Luke is the most popular thing in darts."

Stephen Bunting is not involved in the Premier League this year, but it is worth mentioning a memorable moment for him at last weekend's Masters.

'The Bullet' put in a brilliant performance to defeat Michael van Gerwen in the final and win his first televised PDC title.

The Englishman beat five-time champion Van Gerwen 11-7 in Milton Keynes in his first televised PDC final since the 2014 Sydney Darts Masters.

Having thrashed Peter Wright 10-2 and Nathan Aspinall 11-1, Bunting kept that form to average 102 in the title match.

"I'm lost for words," an emotional Bunting, 38, said afterwards.

"This just shows my hard work is paying off, and it's a great start to the season. Hopefully I can push on from this.

"My main aim when I moved over from the BDO was to win big titles, but you're playing the best of the best, and you're going to be pushed all the way."

Michael Smith is currently top of the table after he beat Gerwyn Price 6-2 to win the opening night of the 2024 Premier League in Cardiff.

Smith beat Michael van Gerwen and Luke Littler to reach the final at the Utilita Arena, despite whistles from the crowd adding a stain to the night.

Price beat Nathan Aspinall in his quarter-final before cruising past Rob Cross to reach the evening's final.

But England's Smith denied Welshman Price a second straight Premier League win in Cardiff.

The Premier League spans 17 weeks and 17 locations across Europe.

At each event, the eight players will compete in four quarter-finals, two semi-finals and then the weekly final - with every match a first-to-six contest.

Each player will have one quarter-final match against all seven other competitors between weeks one and seven, and weeks nine and 15.

On night eight and night 16, the quarter-finals will be determined by the standings at the time.

Players who reach the semi-finals on a given night will gain two points, with the night's runner-up collecting three points and the winner awarded five.

Those points are collected through the first 16 weeks, with the top four players then progressing to the finals night at the O2 Arena in London on 23 May.

The two semi-finals will be best of 19 legs, with the final later that evening a best-of-21 contest.

The 2024 champion will take home £275,000, with the runner-up collecting £125,000, while the winner of each weekly event wins £10,000.
