  1. Post update

Well that's it then. A mere 17 hours after Marc Higginson kicked this live text off, we are calling it a day!

Good night one and all and the good news is we are back in nine hours or so to chew over all the fallout before Saturday's action.

    Over and out.

  2. Post update

    Martin Keown

    Football Focus

"The trials and tribulations of Transfer Deadline Day - it's well worth it!"

  3. Post update

    Owen Coyle

    Football Focus

"This day puts a lot of people under pressure, particularly smaller clubs. And there's huge pressure in the Premier League, a rush to get things in place for the end of the window."

Enjoy Football Focus: Deadline Day Special on BBC One.

  4. Post update

On Twitter, there were more than 1.6m references to transfer deadline day on Friday 31 January (up to 23:00 GMT).

    The most mentioned players were:

    1. Kim Kallstrom

    2. Yevhen Konoplyanka

    3. Julian Draxler

    4. Dimitar Berbatov

    5. Kurt Zouma

Interestingly, two of those five didn't go through in the end...

  5. Post update

    Martin Keown

    Football Focus

"Kim Kallstrom will come into the Arsenal midfield. It's a temporary signing, but the front of the Gunners team is still a problem. It's a gamble, though we trust in Arsene Wenger. There is no big worry, but compare what Man City have and the forward line is still a problem for Arsenal."

Enjoy Football Focus: Deadline Day Special on BBC One.

  6. Text us on 81111

Ethan: I will guarantee that Konoplyanka will move to another Premier League club in the summer. Just do the deals Liverpool, and get them done.

Andrew: So instead of Arsenal signing a striker that they so desperately need, they've gone and loaned one out to Watford for the rest of the season! Classic Arsene Wenger transfer logic.

  7. Valencia confusion

We were all a bit surprised that Valencia signed Philippe Senderos earlier on this evening. But perhaps Valencia's tweet welcoming him to the club but showing a picture of Brede Hangeland may explain it all.

    Mistaken identity...?

  8. Post update

    Martin Keown

    Football Focus

"Tom Ince is at Palace and I feel he's a real talent. I'm surprised a lot of the bigger clubs haven't gone for him - I expect him to go from strength-to-strength now. He'll be a breath of fresh air for them now, as Palace look like they're getting themselves out of trouble."

Enjoy Football Focus: Deadline Day Special on BBC One.

  9. Rat released

A late one has gone through, a move of sorts, as Razvan Rat has been released from West Ham by mutual consent. The Romanian left-back has been reasonably heavily involved this year so it's a bit of a strange one. He does free up a place in the squad though.

  10. Liverpool update

    BBC Sport's Ben Smith

"Liverpool had a deal agreed with Yevhen Konoplyanka - the player wanted to come to Liverpool. In the end it didn't happen because the owner of the Ukrainian club refused to sign the relevant paperwork."

  11. BreakingDONE DEAL

    Lee Tomlin to Middlesbrough

    Done deal

Middlesbrough have beaten the deadline to sign Peterborough's Lee Tomlin, initially on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

  12. Ince on Ince

    Crystal Palace

New Palace winger Tom Ince on 5 live Sport: "It's never nice to leave a club like Blackpool, who have done ever so well for me. I had three fantastic years there, but when an opportunity like this comes around... as soon as I met Tony Pulis and Steve Parish at Palace it felt like the right thing for me. I'm very happy.

"I spoke to Tony and it's amazing how well Tony has done there since he came in, and he said to me I was someone he needs, someone who can run at people and create some magic in the final third. Steve has worked hard behind the scenes to get me to Palace and I'm grateful for that.

"I had a gut feeling - Palace was for me and I'm going to be happy to play in a Palace shirt."

  13. BreakingDONE DEAL

    Joe Ledley to Crystal Palace

And Crystal Palace's fine deadline day concludes with confirmation that they have signed Joe Ledley from Celtic on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Stephen Dobbie has also moved to Blackpool on loan until the end of the season.

  14. Ince on Ince

    BBC Radio 5 live

Paul Ince on BBC radio 5 live: "I feel like [Crystal Palace chairman] Steve Parish is my wife, the amount of time I've spent with him today but we got there in the end.

"Other clubs wanted a permanent deal but we felt that wasn't right - we wanted to take a loan deal and see what the options are at the end of the season.

"Steve Parish has been fantastic and I'd like to thank Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston because he's played a massive part in getting this over the line.

"The only ones who could take Thomas were Palace and Swansea. I had a good conversation with [Swansea chairman] Huw Jenkins but we felt that Tony Pulis sold the club to Thomas and that he'd be part of the club and play games. He'll have that opportunity to show what he can do under Tony Pulis."

  15. Middlesbrough latest

Peterborough confirm that they have accepted a bid from Middlesbrough for forward Lee Tomlin but the clubs must wait and see if the deal went through before the deadline.

  16. BreakingDONE DEAL

    Thomas Ince to Crystal Palace

Thomas Ince has confirmed that he has joined Crystal Palace on loan from Blackpool until the end of the season.

  17. Post update

Thomas Ince is on BBC Radio 5 live - that should clear up where he has gone...

  18. Liverpool latest

    David Pleat

Former Tottenham manager on 5 live Sport

"I saw Liverpool beat Everton the other day - they played superbly well. I don't think it's a tragedy that they did not sign this eastern European winger today. No-one knew him that well, and any foreign player is a bit of a gamble. They would have paid good money for him as well. I don't think it's a tragedy for Liverpool - they've got a good, settled squad at the moment. If I was Liverpool gunning for the top four I wouldn't worry."

Listen to transfer deadline day latest on BBC Radio 5 live right now.

  19. Still to come

    Any business still to come?

We are still waiting for Crystal Palace to confirm that they have indeed signed both Joe Ledley and Thomas Ince before the deadline, while Middlesbrough hope to land forward Lee Tomlin from Peterborough.

Nathan Pedersen: How annoyed would you be if you were a striker and didn't get a call from Harry Redknapp today.

  22. Post update

So after a month of trying to get someone in, and failing with a bid for now Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah, it's a frustrating end to the transfer window for Liverpool.

  27. Post update

BBC Radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis

"It's important to stress that although the window has closed there is still a drip-drip effect that deals can still be announced. I must stress that because Yevhen Konoplyanka is an international deal Liverpool have an extra hour to file the paperwork. But there's still no word from Liverpool.

"Graham Dorrans didn't join Middlesbrough from West Brom - the Baggies pulled the plug right at the end.

"And QPR are still hopefully of that Modibo Maiga deal on loan from West Ham."

  33. BreakingTHE TRANSFER WINDOW IS CLOSED

  34. Post update

Minutes to go, though clubs can push deals through after the deadline as long as they can prove that an agreement was signed in time...

  35. QPR LATEST

    BBC Radio 5 live

Philip Beard, chief executive of QPR, on 5 live Sport: "We're in the process of sorting Modibo Maiga before the deadline. You get a bit of leeway with the timings with a loanee, and we're confident we can get it sorted. If you ask most clubs their priority going in to the window, people who can score goals are at a premium. We had identified that as an issue and that was magnified massively last weekend when Charlie Austin damaged his shoulder. He's out for certainly a few months.

"Will Keane is coming to us on loan from Manchester United. Harry Redknapp is a fantastic manager of young talent. Look at what happened with Andros Townsend, who performed at a high level when he was here and then became one of the top international players last season."

  36. Cobblers update

Here we go! Northampton have signed Crawley striker Emile Sinclair on loan to end of season, with a view to a two-year contract for an undisclosed fee. The basement boys doing business...

  41. Boro update

BBC Sport's Steve Crossman reports: "So, Danny Graham looks like's joined Middlesbrough - we're awaiting confirmation but my understanding is that it's gone through.

"Graham Dorrans is also a target. West Brom may have pulled the plug on this one at the last minute. If that's true - and it looks increasingly like it is - it's still possible Boro will turn their attention to Lee Tomlin from Peterborough.

"If either join, Marvin Emnes will go to Swansea. If neither join, Aitor Karanka will have a big decision to make about allowing him to leave."

  42. Everton done

BBC Sport Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty

"Everton have confirmed there will be no more dealings tonight. They were trying to get a midfield player in but it hasn't happened. It would have been a bonus. There are areas of the squad that are a bit thin but they seem happy with what they've got."

Listen to transfer deadline day latest on BBC Radio 5 live right now.

  43. THOMAS INCE UPDATE

    BBC Radio 5 live

    Thomas Ince

Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston on 5 live Sport: "I've left the ground and our poor secretary is sitting in his cold office waiting for various faxes. He will call me if anything gets concluded.

"We were open-minded to start with regarding Tom Ince, then we've become minded to seek a permanent deal. The player wants to go on loan and play in the Premier League, and we understand that.

"I think the transfer window, various aspects are a bit pointless. We all whip ourselves into a frenzy on the last day when we could have done our business weeks ago.

"We'd agreed after Paul Ince left that Tom could go out on loan. It's no secret that various clubs have been spoken to.

"We're working on bringing Stephen Dobbie the other way from Crystal Palace. This one has been one of the most protracted things I've been involved in in 15 years in football. I won't be surprised if we have a last-minute hitch.

"But Palace have been around asking questions for months, so I'll be pleased if they land their man. It'll be great to see him in the Premier League."

  44. Post update

Twenty minutes left - where's Tom Ince? Let's find out...

  45. Everton update

"This is a club with a great history and I always enjoyed playing at Craven Cottage, I really like it as a stadium. It's not one of the biggest but it's got something special.

"The main thing is to keep Fulham in the league and hopefully the boys will start with a win against Southampton."

  49. Fulham update

    BBC Sport's David Ornstein

"Fulham's permanent deals for Manchester United pair Ryan Tunnicliffe and Larnell Cole are close to completion. The paperwork is being processed."

  74. Post update

    David Pleat

Former Tottenham manager on 5 live Sport

"The clubs at the bottom of the table, fighting to survive, have done all the business. The mid-table sides haven't been too busy at all. Crystal Palace's window has been interesting. The surprising thing to me is £3m on goalkeeper Hennessey, whereas I think Julian Speroni has done really well over a number of seasons. Tony Pulis is bolstering his squad while looking to the summer when he may ship a few players out."

  76. Medicals matter

    Danny Murphy

    5 live Sport

"Clubs will get experts to read your scan, but the expert might not be available. Sometimes the guy will be in London or in Sweden whose expertise is a specific part of the body, and the clubs will only deal with them, they will only listen to certain people.

"Sometimes clubs will do the medical, find a problem, then renegotiate the contract. Instead of a three-year contract, two years with a third based on appearances. That can be the way of nicking a little more money back."

Swansea could sign Marvin Emnes, Stoke remain keen on Jonathan Pitroipa, Thomas Ince has to sign for someone and Crystal Palace are in the hunt for Joe Ledley as well.

    Stay tuned...

  78. Medicals matter

    Danny Murphy

    5 live Sport

"I moved from Crewe to Liverpool. I turned up to sign and they found a problem with my medical. I'd never had an injury, but the deal was off. It was a dream move for me. For a day it was off.

"I was in bits - I'd told everyone I was going to sign, my family and friends. Then a day later they got a second opinion and it turned out they'd read the scan wrong. I was fine, and I joined Liverpool."

Listen to transfer deadline day latest on BBC Radio 5 live right now.

  79. Post update

    5 live Sport

"Yevhen Konoplyanka is an outstanding player, beyond all doubt. It shows real intent from Liverpool. My own reservation would be that those sorts of players from eastern Europe often don't do it in the Premier League. That would be my worry, but he is an outstanding talent."

  89. Arsenal latest

"Not bringing in a striker is a huge gamble by Arsenal at this stage of the season, especially when you look at Man City raining goals. If Arsenal don't win the title then people will point to this. Be sure, the next big cheque that's signed in the summer will be for a striker."

  92. Stoke latest

    BBC Radio 5 live

Stoke chairman Peter Coates on 5 live Sport: "The Lee Cattermole deal is dead. We thought that was going to happen and it hasn't - we're not quite sure why. We thought there was a deal to be done, but now there isn't - you need to ask Sunderland about that.

"Blackpool wanted a loan deal for Tom Ince, but we were unable to do that. We were unable to secure the purchase, so that won't happen.

"Jonathan Pitroipa of French club Stade Rennais is a late possibility now, the only player we're still trying to bring in. Then that would be that, with nobody leaving."

  93. Post update

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins on 5 live Sport: "If you look at our first team squad, it was always Michael Laudrup's decision to keep a small, close-knit squad. It's been well documented how many injuries we've had in the last six to eight weeks, but now they're all coming back to fitness. So the majority of signings we've made are for our youth team, our under-21 squad.

"There was no bid for Chico Flores today - that rumour was completely untrue.

"As things stood earlier we were trying to complete a deal for Middleborough forward Marvin Emnes - and I think that will still go through.

  125. What is going on at Leeds?

    Brian McDermott

Crazy goings on at Elland Road then.

It was reported earlier this afternoon that Massimo Cellino, the owner of Italian club Cagliari, was close to an agreement to buy a stake in Leeds, believed to be about 75%.

Before that, managing director David Haigh had announced on Thursday that his consortium's bid for the club had collapsed because of a lack of funds.

The Elland Road club is currently - as far as we know - owned by Dubai-based investment group GFH Capital.

Cellino had been reported to be keen to replace manager Brian McDermott with former Middlesbrough defender Gianluca Festa.

And speaking to Radio Leeds on Friday, McDermott admitted he was not sure if he would be in charge of the club beyond their Championship derby against Huddersfield Town.

"I've got no idea if I'll be here after Saturday's match. In football any game could be your last match so you have to make the most of it, especially at a club like Leeds United," he said.

    Arsenal

Swedens Kim Kallstrom, left, and Portugals Joao Moutinho challenge for the ball

BBC World Service's Steve Crossman reports: In Kim Kallstrom, Arsenal are getting a player I wish had left Lyon for the Premier League nearly four years ago.

In April 2010 his Champions League season ended at the semi-final stage after defeat to Bayern Munich.

Along with Miralem Pjanic, who went on to star for AS Roma, he had been an important figure in the success of a Lyon side which had earlier ousted Manuel Pellegrini's Real Madrid over two legs.

He's mobile, he can play anywhere across the midfield and he takes a mean free kick.

I'd expect him to slot effortlessly into the Arsenal side but at 31, his best years are clearly behind him.

    Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes

This is not a transfer story for deadline day, more one for the summer. It's still interesting though, because rumours that Barcelona are back in talks with Victor Valdes regarding a new contract have been denied by the Spanish champions.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper, who has spent his entire career with the club, was rumoured to have re-started negotiations about continuing his career at Camp Nou.

But Barce, who are interested in replacing him with Borussia Monchengldbach stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen (that's actually his name, not my bad typing), have denied there have been any further talks.

As it stands, Valdes will leave the club at the end of the season.

"Yevhen Konoplyanka would be a terrific signing for Liverpool. I've played against him and he has great feet as well as a physical presence - he has the capability to adapt quickly. He will add creativity to that Liverpool team.

"I'll be surprised if Tom Ince goes anywhere permanently today. He's a superb talent - his assists and goals in the Championship have been great and he's very much in demand. And he'll be a welcome addition at any of those clubs near the bottom because of his creativity."

Club captain Cattermole is going nowhere, and he'll be a Sunderland player when the window closes. Do Stoke have time to find a replacement?

  153. Craig Gardner latest

    West Brom

BBC radio 5 live's Pat Murphy reports that West Brom are trying to sign the Sunderland midfielder Craig Gardner. If it goes through Albion would be the third Premier League club from the West Midlands that the Birmingham-born Gardner has played for, after Aston Villa and Birmingham.

I can't imagine new West Brom boss Pepe Mel knows a huge amount about him but he's a proven midfielder.

  154. Liverpool latest

    Liverpool

BBC Sport's Andy Swiss at Anfield: "Brendan Rodgers said in his press conference earlier on today that the transfer of Yevhen Konoplyanka is a little bit complicated. But the winger is a talented player, a Ukrainian international who played against England recently and scored a stunning goal at Wembley. And he can play on either flank, so he's very versatile.

"Liverpool fans will want to see a player arrive - some of them are frustrated at a lack of activity in this transfer window."

  155. Osvaldo update

    Southampton

    Osvaldo

Southampton's purchase of Dani Osvaldo hasn't exactly gone to plan, but at least they are not losing money on the volatile Italian.

Juventus have confirmed that the loan deal "also includes the option, to be exercised before 13 May, for the purchase of the player's full registration rights at a price of 19 million euros, to be paid over the course of three years".

That deal would be worth £15.6m to Southampton and the reigning Serie A champions will pay his wages in full during the loan.

That is good business, you have to say...

  156. Post update

BBC Radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis

"There haven't been any big-money deals today, though there have been loan deals aplenty. Liverpool's pursuit of Yevhen Konoplyanka could go down to the wire - the Dnipro owner is not keen to sell.

"Lee Cattermole is a deal that could go through to Stoke, while Craig Gardner could be moving back to the Midlands at West Brom."

  157. Real or no Real

BBC Sport's Saj Chowdhury: "Real Madrid tell the BBC that they don't expect any arrivals or departures before the transfer window shuts. The Spanish giants spent more than £130m in the summer, including a world record £85m for Gareth Bale from Tottenham."

  178. Chain reaction

BBC World Service's Steve Crossman reports: "The Dani Osvaldo move from Southampton to Juventus may well start a chain reaction of transfers.

"Juventus are now top heavy up front so Mirko Vucinic's proposed swap deal to Inter Milan (with Freddy Guarin coming the other way) is now a real possibility.

"If Inter lose a midfielder then the Hernanes deal (which should happen anyway) can then be rubber stamped and his soon to be former employers Lazio will want a new midfielder, that's where Gael Kakuta comes in.

"Fifty transfers down the line I'm sure Osvaldo's arrival in Turin somehow impacts on Danny Graham's proposed move to Middlesbrough…probably."

Chelsea earlier completed a £12m move for 19-year-old St Etienne centre-back Kurt Zouma.

Dave Sansom: Pretty much every top European club was linked with Zouma and numbers in the range of 18 to 20 million were being thrown around, so it's a great signing for Chelsea.

Muasya Musyimi: Kurt Zouma, did you have a chat with these young players before penning down the deal - Lukaku? Chalobah? De Bruyne? Nathan Ake? You will never play at Chelsea and the best you will do is seek a loan move to QPR!

    Crystal Palace

BBC Sport's Andy Cryer: "While Blackburn Rovers wait to hear on whether captain Scott Dann will agree personal terms with Crystal Palace, they may yet be losing another player to the Londoners - although this departure would be more welcome.

"Palace have shown an interest in Rovers' out of favour striker Leon Best. Best has been frozen out by Blackburn for most of this season with the Lancashire club keen to offload his big wages.

"Any potential deal between Palace and Best would depend on Best taking a sizeable drop in wages. Palace also have several alternative striker targets. Scott Dann would also have to accept a drop in wages to complete his move."

  192. Fulham latest

    BBC Sport's David Ornstein

"Everton defender John Heitinga is in London for talks with Fulham over a possible move to Craven Cottage.

"Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen identified fellow Dutchman Heitinga as his preferred candidate to replace Aaron Hughes before the Northern Ireland international's move to QPR, which went through earlier on Friday.

  200. The new Cantona...?

    Fulham

    Eric Cantona

Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Roy Carroll , who now plays for Olympiakos, believes Fulham have made a great signing in their purchase of Greece striker Konstantinos Mitroglou for about £11m.

In fact, he may just be a cult icon in the making.

"I've known him for two years at Olympiakos and he has played at the highest level in the Champions League and scored a lot of goals for us there," Carroll told BBC Radio 5 live.

"He has been the top goalscorer in Greece for the last two years. He is 26 and hungry and passionate about his football.

Fulham have signed Greece striker Konstantinos Mitroglou from Olympiakos for about £11m, while Dimitar Berbatov could join Monaco.

Cardiff have completed the signing of Manchester United winger Wilfried Zaha on loan until the end of the season.

    Bjorn Sigurdarson to Molde

Wolves manager Kenny Jackett has already got rid of Kevin Doyle and Wayne Hennessey today, and Leigh Griffiths could also be off, but that hasn't stopped him from sending out another first-teamer on loan.

  209. Man City latest

BBC Sport Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty

on 5 live Drive: "Manuel Pellegrini hinted earlier today that there may be some business, potentially the biggest deals of the day, at Manchester City. But it appears now that price tags are prohibitive and City don't feel any urgency to sign players and they don't need to add to their squad. So I suspect business is done for the day at City."

BBC World Service Sport's Steve Crossman: "The European transfer deadline day tapestry is once again weaving its way into England.

  217. Swansea latest

    Swansea City

BBC Wales report that Swansea boss Michael Laudrup says Neil Taylor will only make a transfer deadline day exit from the club if he manages to sign a replacement.

The 24-year-old Welsh international full-back has struggled to hold down a regular place in Laudrup's side since returning from injury, due to the emergence of Ben Davies. The Swans have rejected a bid from Fulham for him previously.

"We will only sell him if we can get a replacement," said Laudrup.

Taylor is currently in Swansea with his wife, who is due to give birth to their second child.

His agent says West Ham have made an enquiry about Taylor and Fulham are believed to have made a second bid.

Moxey said: "With Wayne this season, it was a similar situation to other players in the past such as Joleon Lescott whereby if we received an acceptable offer from a Premier League club we were not going to stand in his way.

"It was a case of once again proving his fitness, as he did with Yeovil, and then when the bid came in, reaching agreement with Crystal Palace.

    Loic Remy and Harry Redknapp

With the bottom half of the table so congested, and the title race so compelling, everyone will be on the lookout today for a striker.

If the right man can be found for the right price, expect some movement. But is signing a striker in January a good move?

The 11 forwards signed by Premier League clubs last January managed 23 goals in 108 games between them before the end of the season.

Not bad? Maybe - until you realise that Daniel Sturridge (10 goals for Liverpool) and Loic Remy (six for QPR) scored the lion's share of those.

BBC Radio 5 live's chief football reporter Ian Dennis has his finger on the pulse, keeping you up-to-date with the latest news. We have also heard from former Chelsea defender Michael Duberry and ex-Republic of Ireland international Kevin Kilbane, getting their take on what it is like to be a player.

  258. Blackburn Rovers update

BBC Sport's Andy Cryer: "The clock is ticking for Crystal Palace to complete the signing of Blackburn skipper Scott Dann. Dann is in London to discuss personal terms but the two clubs are still some way apart on agreeing a fee. Blackburn will not sell the defender on the cheap."

  259. Post update

    League Two side AFC Wimbledon

    AFC Wimbledon

"Transfer update: No players spotted out the window, although bizarrely this chap is carrying a hawk."

  260. Kevin Kilbane Q&A

How influential are agents when it comes to last-minute sudden signings? Cliff B

"They're touting players around, speaking to various clubs - I'd imagine that one player can be put to several clubs throughout the league, just to see if they can keep the business going, and to generate interest in the players. All of a sudden if you put in a certain name to so many different clubs, maybe someone will bite and say "yeah, we'll take him"- and that's how it works.

"Agents are very influential now. They're the first port of call for clubs, whereas say 20 to 30 years ago, a club would go direct to another club and ask if they could negotiate a deal. Now it's always that middle-man.

"Agents have a huge part to play in football, both from the player's side and perhaps even more so from the clubs as they employ an agent to go out and recruit, even if it's not one of their own players. That's how it is now."

  261. Everton update

BBC Sport Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty

After completing the signing of teenage goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek from Sparta Prague, I have been told Everton are currently exploring other deals - and the likelihood of this could be the arrival of a midfield player on loan. No names yet as a number of options being looked into.

  262. Palace Ince closer to another deal?

    Tom Ince

News of another Crystal Palace signing to go with Wayne Hennessey, Jason Puncheon and, potentially, Joe Ledley? Sort of...

Crystal Palace technical coach David Kemp is taking on press duties this afternoon and he says: "Tom Ince is close but I'm not in those negotiations so I don't know where that's at.

"On this day in particular, a lot can go on. I'd like to say it's going to happen but you never know in football."

Sharkey in North London: Think Kallstrom will fit in perfectly at Arsenal just like the great Freddie Ljungberg. Home Swede home.

  264. Kevin Kilbane Q&A

What is the most stressful part about deadline day, and why? Rian Hoskins

"I've moved twice on deadline day. The first time, I moved from Sunderland to Everton it was around the first few transfer windows. There was an offer for me from Southampton a month or two before. I thought I was going to move, but it didn't happen. Then, as the deadline day loomed, I had a call saying I was going to be going on loan to Everton. Mick McCarthy, the Sunderland manager, didn't want it going ahead - it was a permanent deal or nothing. That deal was on and off probably six or seven times that day and I didn't think it would eventually go through. I had to sign via fax at Sunderland as I couldn't do the mileage down to Everton to do the deal.

"It can be quite stressful for families as well. You think about who's moving a player on and where he's coming from but everyone has wives, girlfriends and children. Do you then have to re-direct your children to a different school? It can be quite difficult."

  265. BreakingDONE DEAL

Notts County have signed former Derby and Doncaster defender Gareth Roberts on a deal until the end of the season, reports BBC Radio Nottingham.

The 35-year-old left-back has played more than 500 league appearances since starting his career as a trainee at Liverpool, and has won nine Wales caps.

  266. Kevin Kilbane Q&A

Is the World Cup influencing transfers? Udeme Bassey

"I think it is. We see it now with Nikica Jelavic - the first thing he said is he wants to be playing first-team football and that's why he moved to Hull until the end of the season. He's probably going to a good club with a good manager, but that's not the issue. He's thinking I want to play in the World Cup and I want to have played 15-20 games at the end of the season going into that World Cup. Certainly this time of the year a player would push through a move simply with that in mind."

  267. Swansea update

BBC Sport's Luke Reddy: "Swansea City will complete the signing of 19-year-old Falkirk midfielder Jay Fulton later today. The Welsh club are also continuing to negotiate with a number of clubs with a view to signing a wide player."

  268. Liverpool update

    Juliette Ferrington

    BBC Sport

Liverpool fans, are you wondering what is happening with the Reds' attempts to sign FC Dnipro winger Yehven Konoplyanka? Here is BBC Sport's Juliette Ferrington to tell us more:

"He is still in his press conference ahead of Sunday's game against West Brom but Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says there is no update on deal, and that it is a little complicated.

"Rodgers says: 'If we improve the group in this window then great. If not, I'm happy to go with what we've got.'"

  269. Kevin Kilbane Q&A

Do you think Fifa and Uefa should stop big teams like Chelsea and Man City buying more players when they've already got a big squad in this transfer window? Hits Joshi

"I think we know the facts of the Financial Fair Play rules but it's more about the intricacies of it and how clubs manipulate the rules. We can see that clubs are blatantly bending those rules so we may get to a point in two or three years' time when it becomes more of an issue. I think the way football is now and the way the transfer deadline itself is creating huge interest, it's all good for the game.

"Ultimately I think we'll always see that the big clubs with the biggest financial power are always going to be making the big signings because they can, unless something can be done to regulate it. Football clubs can't continue to overspend year after year after year because we're going to see more of them going to the wall - it has that knock on-effect through the leagues."

  270. Post update

    League Two side AFC Wimbledon

    AFC Wimbledon

"Transfer update: A car just parked outside. If it belongs to a player he is probably in our price range."

  271. BreakingDONE DEAL

This one is not quite like a player leaving Tottenham to join Arsenal but, if you live in Herefordshire or Worcestershire, it is close... Kidderminster Harriers have signed midfielder Josh O'Keefe from financially troubled local rivals Hereford United for an undisclosed fee.

  273. Kevin Kilbane Q&A

We've been putting your Twitter questions on deadline day to former Everton and Sunderland winger Kevin Kilbane. Check out his answers:

Do you think it has been a good or bad transfer window? Luco Carter

"I think at this time of the year I can't say it's ever going to be a great transfer window. For the top clubs, the ones challenging for the lead, it's just one or two players that can make the difference. You look at United and Juan Mata and it suddenly looks a bit rosier for United.

"You see the other teams in and around them signing players who might make a difference, even looking as far down as, say, Hull City, who bring in two strikers. So if you look throughout the league, I think probably most clubs will say they're happy.

"I think in general we're seeing one or two smaller-scale deals going through at clubs which will help in their quest to stay in the Premier League or qualify for the Champions League and European football."

  275. Fernando heading to Man City?

    Porto midfielder Fernando

Some news for Manchester City fans now, from BBC World Service Sport's John Bennett, and it sounds (fairly) promising:

"FC Porto head coach Paulo Fonseca has been speaking about Manchester City transfer target Fernando in his Friday press conference.

"Fonseca says Fernando is 'a major player in the team, but he's not irreplaceable'."

Manchester City have targeted Fernando and his team mate, midfielder Eliaquim Mangala, in a double deadline day deal.

  276. BreakingDONE DEAL

These deals just keep on dropping, don't they? News from BBC Radio Lincolnshire now...

Lincoln City have completed the signing of Crewe defender Thierry Audel on a month's loan. It's unclear whether a deal for striker Delano Sam Yorke from Cambridge United will go ahead but his teammate Mitch Austin is set to extend his loan spell until April.

  277. BreakingDONE DEAL

Crystal Palace have confirmed the permanent signing of Jason Puncheon from Southampton. The 27-year-old initially moved to Selhurst Park on a season-long loan in the summer.

  278. BreakingDONE DEAL

Brighton & Hove Albion have completed the signing of former Celta Vigo striker David Rodriguez on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old cancelled his contract with the La Liga side this week and has signed a deal until the end of the season.

  280. Kagawa staying at Man Utd - for now

    Man Utd forward Shinji Kagawa

BBC Sport's Saj Chowdhury: Shinji Kagawa will not be making a deadline day move away from Manchester United, according to his agent Thomas Kroth. The 24-year-old Japan midfielder, who signed from Borussia Dortmund for a reported £12m in the summer of 2012, has only made nine appearances in the league this season. When asked about whether the player would remain at Old Trafford after the summer, Kroth said: "That's still five or six months away."

  281. Sunderland update

BBC Sport's Joe Townsend: With less than 24 hours until the Tyne-Wear derby, there are frantic goings-on at Sunderland.

Liam Bridcutt has signed from Brighton for £3m but it is mainly departures from the Stadium of Light.

Three have left on loan, with winger Duncan Watmore joining Hibs, David Moberg Karlsson Kilmarnock, and Modibo Diakite Fiorentina.

There are still strong rumours than Danny Graham will be recalled from his spell at Hull City so he can rejoin his first club Middlesbrough permanently, whilst Stoke continue to be linked with a deal to sign Lee Cattermole.

The countdown continues as we wait for some of the deals that appear to be in the pipeline to go through.

Fulham striker Dimitar Berbatov is poised to join Monaco on loan while Arsenal are keen on Sweden midfielder Kim Kallstrom. Manchester City want a pair of Porto players and Liverpool are still hoping to push through a deal for FC Dnipro winger Yehven Konoplyanka.

In terms of moves that have already happened, Chelsea have signed strapping St Etienne defender Kurt Zouma, Fulham have snapped up Tottenham's Lewis Holtby on loan and Crystal Palace have swooped for Wolves keeper Wane Hennessey.

  284. View from Europe

BBC World Service Sport's John Bennett: "In Italy, the transfer saga involving Inter Milan's Fredy Guarin continues.

"Earlier I brought you the news that he'd taken to Twitter to complain about how the club have been treating him during the transfer window.

"Now La Gazetta Dello Sport are reporting that a swap deal involving the Juventus striker Mirko Vucinic could be back on. Vucinic has also been linked with Arsenal during the window."

  285. BreakingDONE DEAL

    Kim Kallstrom

"Kim Kallstrom is in London to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms ahead of his proposed loan move to Arsenal from Spartak Moscow. The Gunners are very unlikely to make any other signings before the window shuts."

  288. Lawro's Verdict

Lawro on West Brom: "West Brom have to bring someone in to replace Shane Long. If Nicolas Anelka is banned for his 'quenelle' gesture or is injured, what have they got? Saido Berahino is not a classic up through the middle man, while Matej Vydra has got great pace but he is learning the game.

    Wilfried Zaha

Manchester United winger Wilfried Zaha finally completed his loan move to Cardiff City today, and Reds boss David Moyes is hopeful the ex-Crystal Palace player will benefit from his time in Wales.

"I said right at the start of the season that if I could get him the games I'd keep him," said Moyes. "If I couldn't then I'd get him some games on loan.

"There were a few clubs who wanted him on loan but in the end we felt Cardiff was the right choice for him. Hopefully he will go and get those games, show what he can do in the Premier League and be ready to come back to us at the end of the season.

"He's a young player - he has real potential. He did terrifically well at Crystal Palace and that's why the club purchased him."

February is a pretty big month for City - it means Aguero will miss two clashes with Chelsea in the Premier League and FA Cup, and also sit out the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Barcelona.

    Juan Mata

What have been the most talked about moves of the transfer window so far on the web/social media? Since 1 January in the UK, Manchester United and Chelsea have been the most searched for clubs on Google, with six of the top 10 searched for players this transfer window involving transfers from one of the two clubs. Juan Mata was searched 7.5m times, Anderson 3.1m and Mohamed Salah searched for more than 2m.

Juan Mata has also dominated social media chatter on Twitter, with more than 4.5m mentions in the week around his move to Manchester United. To put that figure into perspective, over the course of the 2013 transfer window, Gareth Bale's world-record transfer to Real Madrid amassed 8.4m mentions on Twitter, followed by Mesut Ozil with 4.3m mentions.

Lennon said: "He's here, the deal's agreed & subject to a medical, he'll hopefully be a Celtic player by the time window closes. He knows the environment, he's a prolific goal-scorer and I think that we can make him better. He'll be a good asset to the club."

Bournemouth are close to completing a deal for Charlton striker Yann Kermorgant - there is just the paperwork to be completed. The only other bit of business expected to be done at Dean Court, in or out, is the signing of 17-year-old forward Ben Whitfield from Yorkshire side Guiseley.

  311. Fernando left out of Porto squad

Not sure how much we should read into this, but Porto have announced their squad for their next Primeira Liga game away at Madeira on Saturday, and it makes interesting reading.

It could be a case of good news and bad news for Manchester City, with Eliaquim Mangala named in the travelling party while fellow target Fernando is ruled out, apparently with a muscle injury.

Arsenal fans are no doubt delighted to be involved this year too, although I am not sure they will be so thrilled when they learn the deal that Arsene Wenger is trying to push through is for a 31-year-old Spartak Moscow midfielder on loan, not to buy Julian Draxler for £40m.

    James Tarkowski

Brentford have signed Oldham Athletic's James Tarkowski for an undisclosed fee, but the defender will be loaned back when the loan window reopens on 8 February.

The 21-year-old was offered a new deal by the Latics, but has instead moved to the League One leaders.

  341. MK Dons update

MK Dons manager Karl Robinson has told BBC Three Counties Radio that he put in two transfer bids for players yesterday - a midfielder and a striker - which were unsuccessful. He may bid for a defender today and is after two loan players. Robinson is also hopeful that midfielder Stephen Gleeson (who is out of contract in the summer) won't leave the club today.

BBC Radio 5 live's Pat Murphy: "Sweden international striker Markus Rosenberg is set to end a miserable 18 months at West Brom by signing for Malmo on a free transfer. Rosenberg, who had 18 months left on his contract, hasn't scored a goal for West Brom in 33 appearances."

  346. Cardiff City update

BBC Radio Wales reports: "Cardiff City manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed three Cardiff players could be leaving the club today. Craig Conway is talking to Championship club Blackburn and Joe Mason is close to a move to Bolton Wanderers. Striker Andreas Cornelius is expected to complete his move back to FC Copenhagen later this afternoon."

  347. Lewis Holtby deal

Lewis Holtby's agent Markus Noack, speaking to BBC Sport: "Fulham have put much effort into Lewis. It is a very well-run club with an excellent manager in Rene Meulensteen. The system and philosophy, how Fulham play fits well with Lewis. He will have match practice in the second half of the season in his favourite position and then we'll see how things are going by summer. 352. Deadline day so far

At the third stroke there will be 11 hours left until the transfer window closes. Time for a recap then!

It's starting to warm up nicely, with Fulham signing Lewis Holtby from Tottenham while Dimitar Berbatov has been linked with a move from Craven Cottage to Monaco, despite the French club's manager saying "nothing definite" will happen.

Southampton striker Dani Osvaldo is having a medical at Juventus while the biggest 'done deal' so far is Sunderland's £3m signing of Brighton midfielder Liam Bridcutt.

Other potential deals include Arsenal signing Kim Kallstrom, Manchester City swooping for Porto pair Eliaquim Mangala and Fernando, and Chelsea landing 19-year-old St Etienne defender Kurt Zouma for £12m.

Bad news for Arsenal though, with news that Aaron Ramsey has been ruled out for six weeks.

  353. Newcastle update

    BBC Sport's Ben Smith

"Holtby is training with the Cottagers as we speak and they hope the Germany international's paperwork will go through in time for him to be available to face Southampton on Saturday.

"Meanwhile, the representatives of Konstas Mitroglou are also at the club's Motspur Park training ground as Fulham seek to fend off competition from West Ham for the Olympiakos striker's signature."

  360. Looking back

How times change, eh? I've just been looking at some figures from transfer deadline day past. In January 2013, Queens Park Rangers, Liverpool and Newcastle United contributed more than half of the total spending. Lawro on Arsenal: "I have said this many times before but the Gunners need reinforcements up front because if anything happens to Olivier Giroud between now and the end of the season they are relying on Nicklas Bendtner for the last three months of the season. That would be very short-sighted considering they are in the hunt for the title."

"The former Manchester City and Leeds player, 25, has been a virtual ever-present for the Terriers this season, and manager Mark Robins is keen to keep him at the John Smith's Stadium.

"Scouts have watched 12-goal top scorer James Vaughan this season - Celtic among those said to have been interested - but with the striker currently injured, it is likely he will remain a Huddersfield player beyond tonight's 23:00 GMT deadline."

  371. Brighton update

BBC Sussex's Johnny Cantor: "Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Oscar Garcia has confirmed former Celta Vigo striker David Rodriguez is having a medical with the club.

"The 27-year-old is expected to train with the Seagulls today before finalising a deal with the Championship club."

Not only were the Eagles rock bottom when he took over, but he inherited a squad which looked desperately short of quality. After all, anybody who squeezes goals out of Marouane Chamakh deserves a medal...

  373. Lawro's Verdict

Lawro on Crystal Palace: "What a job Tony Pulis has done since taking over at Crystal Palace, winning five out of 11 Premier League games and all without signing anybody.

"I think he fired a shot across the bows of the Palace directors earlier this week when he said he needed some new faces, but his problem is that he has done so well, the owners are probably thinking we don't need any new signings.

"He is getting his players to play above themselves but that can only last for so long and Pulis will know that he can only keep going back to the well for so long before it runs dry.

"He also knows exactly what it takes to stay up and he will be pressing hard to get what he needs on Friday."

BBC Sport's Owen Phillips: "Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson seems pretty certain they won't be over-active on transfer deadline day. And given their recent form - which sees them eight points clear at the top of the Championship table after eight consecutive league wins - it's easy to see why Pearson wants a quiet day.

"Fulham's interest in Liam Moore has cooled and Pearson has no desire to sell the highly-rated defender. "The vastly-experienced 31-year-old will provide cover for the injured Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere, with Mathieu Flamini suspended for the next three games.

"Arsenal are confident the transfer will be completed by the 23:00 GMT deadline.

"Kallstrom joined Spartak in 2012 following a six-year spell with Lyon, where he played more than 200 games and helped the French side to the Champions League semi-finals in 2012."

It looks like Big Sam is busy today, because he's sent Neil McDonald out to face the media. And the Hammers right-hand man has been on good form - saying they will play "21st-century football" at home to Swansea on Saturday. That, of course, is in response to Jose Mourinho's jibes in midweek.

On the transfer window, McDonald adds: "With it being deadline day, Sam is busy in the background trying to recruit players for us. We've recruited really well so far. 389. Aston Villa update

"Hoolahan, 31, wants to join his former manager Paul Lambert at Villa Park but there's been bad blood between the two clubs ever since Lambert left Carrow Road in the summer of 2012, taking key members of the backroom staff with him.

"Villa can't make any progress against a blank refusal by Norwich to negotiate over a player who's now just on the first-team fringe, valued at around £1m, but I understand they'll keep trying to land Hoolahan until time runs out."

  390. Premier League spending 2014

News from football finance experts Deloitte now. Before the start of business this morning, Premier League clubs had spent around £95m on new players during this transfer window, £10m more than this time last year.

On the final day of the window in January 2013, Premier League clubs spent £25m. However much they spend in the next 12-and-a-bit hours - and it promises to be a lot more than that - the combined transfer spend of English top-flight clubs this season has already passed the £700m mark for the first time, with spending currently at a cool £725m.

  391. The agent's view

Nobody enjoys Transfer Deadline Day more than football agents. Hawking players around like Del Boy on Peckham market, agents can make millions of pounds from a few phone calls.

That's the perception, anyway. But is it the reality?

"Forgive me for sniggering, but for those people who believe that agents get their money for doing very little then perhaps they should spend a couple of days with me to see what I have to do in order to get a deal over the line," agent Raymond Sparkes told BBC Scotland.

Interestingly, Sparkes describes the January transfer window as "dramatic and unnecessary", offering "nuisance value" for unsettled players.

    Come on now Ray...

  392. Lawro's Verdict

Lawro on Tottenham: "I cannot see Tottenham signing anybody on transfer deadline day. In fact you could argue Tim Sherwood has got too many players and should look to sell or loan out a couple.

On-loan Sunderland midfielder David Vaughan is highly likely to extend his stay with the Championship side and deals for Hull City duo Danny Graham and Jack Hobbs are by no means dead.

"Centre-half Hobbs was recalled by his parent club earlier this month, but Forest are still keen - despite signing another defender in Kevin Gomis on Thursday. Wigan and Reading are also said to be interested.

"And there is still a possibility of bringing in out-of-favour Tigers striker Danny Graham. The 28-year-old is way down the pecking order at the Premier League club following the recent signings of Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long.

"I'm scared because there is also a clock counting down in the bottom right-hand corner, so something important must be about to happen like the arrival of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse, but it turns out Shaun Batt has joined Leyton Orient from Millwall instead. On loan."

The phenomena of Deadline Day is madness, says our very own Ben Dirs. Of course it is, especially when, as Dirs points out, the windows "were introduced in 2002-03 in part to stabilise the game."

They certainly haven't achieved that, but we do now at least get two opportunities a year to wait for Harry Redknapp's car window to wind down.

  422. Don't believe the hype

Owen Bradley, BBC Radio Derby sports reporter: "Expecting a quiet day at Derby County, who wrapped up their January dealings with the signing of George Thorne from West Brom on Thursday. Steve McClaren is much more likely to try and bring a defender in once the emergency loan window opens.

"To the relief of Derby fans, the Will Hughes hype seems to have calmed down. It would be a real surprise if the talented midfielder left the club before the window closes."

  423. Where will Ince end up?

We are hearing that Blackpool's Tom Ince and his advisor/father are not interested in a permanent move anywhere at this stage and are trying to push through a loan move.

However, it is understood that with Ince out of contract in the summer, Blackpool are only interested in a permanent deal.

Crystal Palace and Swansea were the only two teams given official permission to talk to Ince last week but the Welsh club have since withdrawn their interest. Several other clubs - including Stoke - have also been linked with him.

Ince has not trained with Blackpool all week and it is my no means certain a deal will be done today. Could he end up back at the club that recently sacked his father?

    Aaron Ramsey

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is currently doing a news conference, where he has confirmed that midfielder Aaron Ramsey has been ruled out for six weeks. As a result, the Gunners boss says he would like to bring in one player during the course of the day - but it won't be Julian Draxler. The Frenchman added that he would like to "scrap" the winter transfer window because 80% of activity tends to happen on the final day.

  426. Southampton latest

    BBC Sport's Ben Smith

"Southampton's record signing Dani Osvaldo has travelled to Italy ahead of a proposed loan move to Juventus.

"The clubs remain in talks over a deal for Osvaldo but Juventus will have an option to buy the player for £15m at the end of the season.

"The striker has been suspended by Southampton since instigating a training ground fight with his teammate Jose Fonte last week."

  427. Savage Says

BBC pundit and former Premier League enforcer Robbie Savage has spilled the beans on what a transfer move is really like for players.

You can watch the video here, and I'll bring you some of his choice cuts.

Savage on team-mates: "The biggest worry I had about moving clubs was meeting my new team-mates. I was an idiot on the pitch at times and then when I walked into the new dressing room it was like the first day at school. Where can I sit? Who have I upset? Where is my locker?"

  428. Meanwhile in Spain...

In case you missed it amid all the transfer news, an interesting story played out in Spain last night when Racing Santander's players forced the abandonment of their Copa del Rey quarter-final against Real Sociedad by refusing to play because they had not been paid.

When the second leg kicked off, the Santander players huddled together on the edge of the centre circle and would not challenge for the ball.

The protest is expected to cost Santander their place in the competition, although Sociedad had already won the first leg 3-1.

"Even if he signs for Chelsea, Manchester United or whoever, then he will probably be loaned back to St Mary's until the end of the season.

"Ledley had been offered a new deal at Celtic, with his current contract running out this summer, but so far hasn't signed.

"Celtic would prefer to sell now than allow him to run down his contract. The Scottish champions have submitted a third offer for Griffiths and, all going well, the striker will be in Glasgow for a medical today.

"Celtic have been frustrated in a number of other attempts to sign players this month, with clubs reluctant to sell at this time."

  447. Lawro's Verdict

    Tom Ince

Lawro on Tom Ince: "I can understand why Tom Ince did not fancy a move to Cardiff in the summer. His partner was due to give birth, and it was probably the wrong time for him to think about the next step in his career.

"Now is the right time. He has been talking to a few Premier League clubs this week and I think he is being clever by just going on loan to one of them. If he chooses one where he will get a lot of playing time, then at the end of the season he can probably have the pick of some teams higher.

"Good luck to him. He is not afraid to gamble, and he is backing himself to do well without committing himself because a lot of the teams in for him are involved in the relegation struggle.

"It is refreshing to see a young player see the bigger picture. He is a talented player and his dad Paul will give him very sound advice too."

  448. QPR injury blow

The 24-year-old landed heavily during the first half, but played on and gave his side the lead in the match.

Poor Harry. He might have to stick his head out of the window and reel in a transfer now.

  449. The agent's view

    BBC Radio 5 live

Football agent and sports lawyer Xabi de Beristain Humphrey: "The top players, such as Porto's Fernando, will have a number of offers being put to them. The agents will be weighing up how the financial packages work, which can be very complicated.

"Sometimes players just have a gut instinct, and can take a lesser offer to join their favoured club.

"The figure often cited in the press for a transfer figure is not always the full story. Other payments can take place on top, and deals such as friendly matches can be provided."

  452. West Ham news

"West Ham are close to completing a deadline day deal for Napoli defender Pablo Armero.

"The loan deal would provide cover for defender Joey O'Brien, who dislocated his shoulder against Chelsea this week and is likely to be out for the rest of the season.

"But West Ham have moved quickly for the 27-year-old Colombian, who has won 49 caps, as his replacement and he is expected in London today."

  453. The view from Europe

BBC World Service Sport's John Bennett: "The French newspaper l'Equipe are predicting that Serie A club Napoli will renew their interest in Tottenham's midfielder Etienne Capoue today.

"Capoue has been telling the newspaper that being out of the Spurs team could harm his chances of making France's World Cup squad.

  456. Lawro's Verdict

    Yevhen Konoplyanka

Lawro on Liverpool: "Liverpool have been linked with Ukraine winger Yevhen Konoplyanka, who plays for Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. I have seen him a few times and he is not bad at all. Over the last couple of years he has looked really good when he has played for his country. I would be more worried about how he settles into English football and in England because from Sergei Rebrov to Andriy Shevchenko, not many players have come over from Ukraine and done well in the Premier League. Look at Andriy Voronin, who was at Anfield from 2007 to 2010, and struggled too.

"If Liverpool are paying £15m-plus for Konoplyanka, it represents a bit of a gamble but everybody is different. If they get the player we see playing for Ukraine and Dnipro then great - but I just hope he settles in."

"Manchester City's move for Mangala and Fernando - with fees expected to be in the region of £35m if the deals can be done in time - underlines their financial clout.

"With no significant departures expected from the Etihad today the transfers would push the club's overall wage bill even higher.

"Club accounts revealed this week that City paid out £233m in salaries in 2012/13. Broken down that works out at £19.4m per month or £639,000 per day or £26,600 an hour or £443 a minute."

  459. Post update

BBC Sport chief football writer Phil McNulty

"Manchester City are understandably cagey about their deadline day activity, especially as Paris St-Germain are very interested in Porto's defender Eliaquim Mangala.

"But make no mistake, he is a player they want and the quicker the better to head off competition elsewhere. If he comes in this might allow Joleon Lescott to move out on loan. Porto team-mate Fernando is also right on City's radar.

"Everton manager Roberto Martinez insisted it would be a quiet day but he has moved for Sparta Prague's teenage keeper Jindrich Stanek and will also consider bringing in a midfield player on loan. It is the start of a long day."

  462. Ridsdale's view

Former Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale has told BBC Sport his Deadline Day dos and don'ts.

Step one is find the fax machine, but there are some other key points for clubs to lock down.

He said: "If a player doesn't want to play for you, the best you can do is get the best price for the club. A classic example was when I sold Rio Ferdinand at Leeds. He returned from the 2002 World Cup and came into my office on his first day back and said he wanted to go to Manchester United.

"Once we knew he was going, the cat and mouse game is how much can you get for him. Ultimately we got £30m. It was difficult. Once you know the player is going and where he wants to go to, how do you push the price up so the other club don't say 'we know he's coming to us so we'll keep the price depressed'? But we managed to get them from an initial bid of £18m to up to £30m so it was a job well done."

  464. 15 hours to go

The clock continues to tick, but we've not had a single transfer confirmed as yet. However, that could all be about to change as club offices up and down the country open for business. 465. What to expect

    BBC Sport's David Ornstein

    Mirko Vucinic

"Transfer deadline day just wouldn't be the same without Arsenal making a late foray into the market. The Gunners have been linked with a loan move for Juventus striker Mirko Vucinic, while across north London Tottenham are open to the possibility of letting midfielder Lewis Holtby leave, most likely on loan.

"Reports suggest he could join Fulham in a deal that would see striker Dimitar Berbatov go in the opposite direction and rejoin his former club. Staying in the capital, Crystal Palace are working to sign a goalkeeper and centre-back - the latter could be Ivan Ramis if the Wigan defender lowers his wage demands. If the right opportunity arises for the Eagles to sign a striker, they are also ready to do that."

  468. Lawro's January shopping list

Back at Christmas, we asked Lawro for his Premier League shopping list - who needed who, and why?

A month on, many of the deals have been struck, but there are some clubs who have not made much of an inroad into the market yet.

Here are a few choice cuts from Lawro's list:

Arsenal - they need a striker. Lawro said: "Why not try to go for it in January and try to get whoever they are looking at in then? They undoubtedly have the money and the worst case scenario is that if the new man does not settle in straight away then he will be ready by next August rather than trying to settle in then."

Everton - "They clearly do not need any drastic surgery to their squad but they could do with another striker."

Man City - "Their squad looks very strong in every area apart from centre-back where they have problems whenever Vincent Kompany is injured.

"Martin Demichelis has not convinced me and it is clear the manager Manuel Pellegrini does not fancy Joleon Lescott much either."

"The Hammers are trying to hijack Fulham's attempts to sign the Greek striker Konstandinos Mitroglou. The Olympiakos player underwent the first part of his medical with Fulham yesterday and further tests are planned today before an £11m deal is completed.

"But West Ham remain determined to add a striker, as well as a defender, to their squad before tonight's deadline.

"And they are now exploring the possibility of pinching Mitroglou from under Fulham's noses. St Etienne striker Max Gradel is another target."

"Moving is a huge thing in your family's life. Will your wife like it there? Will she make new friends? It's easy for the player, you're lucky to have the routine. Your wife can be left in the house knowing nobody. When I moved to Derby my wife refused to move, she stayed in the North West."

  475. What to expect

BBC Sport Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty

"The last day of the January window rarely has the bank-busting moves of August as most of the big deals are already done - but there will still be clubs deciding whether to add to the squad in the final hours.

"Everton may move if John Heitinga goes while Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini could strengthen in central defence, with Porto's Eliaquim Mangala a potential target. If this happens then will Joleon Lescott be allowed out on loan?

"Can Liverpool - and maybe even Manchester United - get late moves over the line?

"And of course the biggest question of all. Will Spurs chairman Daniel Levy actually be able to resist his usual late dabble in the market, especially after that heavy home defeat to Manchester City?"

  476. The morning gossip

On today of all days - the gossip is a must read.

What's in there today? I can just imagine Big Sam waiting in arrivals at Heathrow and bundling the striker into the back of a van.

Manchester United manager David Moyes is eyeing up a move for Spurs winger Andros Townsend, according to the Sun, and the Daily Mail have gone with the line that Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has entered the race to sign Cagliari and Italy defender Davide Astori, 27.

  477. What to expect

BBC Radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis

"I think we could be in for a busier day than we anticipated at the start of the window.

"Spurs are still looking for a striker, and there are still whispers suggesting the possibility of Manchester United attempting to do one late deal.

Brazil international Hernanes is on the move

BBC World Service Sport's John Bennett: "Deadline day's going to be busy for some of the biggest clubs in Italy. Brazil international Hernanes is expected to join Inter Milan from Lazio in the next few hours. He was in tears when he left the Lazio's training ground yesterday morning.

"Leaders Juventus are in talks to sign Southampton striker Dani Osvaldo on loan.

"Borussia Dortmund may well be the team to watch in Germany. Jakub Blaszczykowski is the latest addition to their long injury list and head coach Jurgen Klopp wants to add Partizan Belgrade's Milos Jojic to his depleted squad.

"In France, the former Arsenal forward Jeremie Aliadiere is expected to sign for Marseille. And Monaco are still chasing a striker.

"And although It's looking relatively quiet in Spain, "Marca" are one of several papers reporting that title challengers Atletico Madrid are trying to sign promising midfielder Angel Correa from Argentine club San Lorenzo."

  481. No Draxler for Arsenal

    BBC Sport's David Ornstein

"The Gunners were interested in bringing the 20-year-old Germany attacking midfielder to Emirates Stadium this transfer window, but they have decided against proceeding with the move.

"Schalke reportedly wanted around 45m euros for Draxler but the Arsenal board and manager Arsene Wenger had a lower valuation.

You wait for the presents your chairman bestows on your club, you wait for other clubs to come and plunder your rivals' star player, and you wait for the clock to tick over to 11pm. Then we all, as one, take a deep breath and lie down.

But until the transfer window closes, it's going to be lively. Things could move quicker than Usain Bolt nipping out for his Friday night chippy tea. And that's fast, believe me.

    In summary, don't go anywhere.
