  1. What about Harry?published at 07:36 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2014

I always wonder what transfer deadline day is like for football managers. Harry Redknapp might not be the obvious centre of attention today, but I bet he was up before the milkman this morning - walking the dog and plotting his first car door interview of the day. Even if he doesn't sign anybody, it just wouldn't be transfer deadline day without 'Arry.

  2. Radio, radiopublished at 07:31 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2014

    BBC Radio 5 live

As you'd expect on a day like this, there will be regular transfer news on the BBC's national and regional radio stations up and down the country.

Radio 5 live will also monitor the final few hours of the transfer window with a special Deadline Day edition of 5 live Sport which will be hosted by Mark Chapman.

He will be joined from 19:00-23:00 by a number of guests, among them ex-Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown, ex-Tottenham boss David Pleat and former Wigan manager Owen Coyle. Also in the studio will be journalist Rory Smith from The Times and European football expert Tor Kristian Karlsen, who will monitor all the major deals across the continent.

The BBC's World Service will also be tracking the big deals from across the globe, with reporters in Europe, Africa and South America.

  3. What to expectpublished at 07:28 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2014

BBC Sport Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty

"The last day of the January window rarely has the bank-busting moves of August as most of the big deals are already done - but there will still be clubs deciding whether to add to the squad in the final hours.

"Everton may move if John Heitinga goes while Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini could strengthen in central defence, with Porto's Eliaquim Mangala a potential target. If this happens then will Joleon Lescott be allowed out on loan?

"Can Liverpool - and maybe even Manchester United - get late moves over the line?

"And of course the biggest question of all. Will Spurs chairman Daniel Levy actually be able to resist his usual late dabble in the market, especially after that heavy home defeat to Manchester City?"

  4. The morning gossippublished at 07:28 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2014

On today of all days - the gossip is a must read.

What's in there today? Well, the Daily Mirror, external reports that West Ham are attempting to hijack Fulham's capture of Kostas Mitroglou in a move which would see Dimitar Berbatov remain at Craven Cottage. I can just imagine Big Sam waiting in arrivals at Heathrow and bundling the striker into the back of a van.

Manchester United manager David Moyes is eyeing up a move for Spurs winger Andros Townsend, according to the Sun,, external and the Daily Mail, external have gone with the line that Cardiff boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has entered the race to sign Cagliari and Italy defender Davide Astori, 27.

  5. What to expectpublished at 07:20 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2014

BBC Radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis

"I think we could be in for a busier day than we anticipated at the start of the window.

"Spurs are still looking for a striker, and there are still whispers suggesting the possibility of Manchester United attempting to do one late deal.

"Those fighting relegation will also be busy - the Stoke interest in Lee Cattermole could mean Sunderland add to the arrival of Ignacio Scocco."

"Leaders Juventus are in talks to sign Southampton striker Dani Osvaldo on loan.

"Borussia Dortmund may well be the team to watch in Germany. Jakub Blaszczykowski is the latest addition to their long injury list and head coach Jurgen Klopp wants to add Partizan Belgrade's Milos Jojic to his depleted squad.

"In France, the former Arsenal forward Jeremie Aliadiere is expected to sign for Marseille. And Monaco are still chasing a striker.

  9. No Draxler for Arsenalpublished at 07:12 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2014

    BBC Sport's David Ornstein

"Arsenal will not be signing Julian Draxler from Schalke after deciding they are unwilling to meet the German club's asking price.

"The Gunners were interested in bringing the 20-year-old Germany attacking midfielder to Emirates Stadium this transfer window, but they have decided against proceeding with the move.

"Schalke reportedly wanted around 45m euros for Draxler but the Arsenal board and manager Arsene Wenger had a lower valuation.

"The only deal Arsenal are understood to be considering before the Friday 23:00 GMT deadline is the acquisition of a player on loan until the end of the season."

So what's been happening in the last 12 hours? Quite a lot actually.

First of all, leading our website is Phil McNulty's story that Manchester City have targeted Porto pair Eliaquim Mangala and Fernando. France defender Mangala, 22, is rated at £35m and is one of Europe's most coveted talents, while Brazilian Fernando, 26, would add to City's considerable midfield resources.

Ben Smith reports that Juventus are in advanced talks with Southampton over a loan move for record signing Dani Osvaldo, while Chelsea are close to completing a £12m move for 19-year-old St Etienne defender Kurt Zouma.

And David Ornstein says that Crystal Palace are working on a deal to sign Blackpool winger Tom Ince on loan until the end of the season.

Yep, it's one of the two days of the year when fax machines are plugged in, helicopters are scrambled at a moment's notice and the world of football goes completely bonkers.

And everyone is invited to this party. If you see Lionel Messi buying a pasty in a Manchester train station or Wayne Rooney walking out of an estate agents in London, we want to know.

  13. Transfer deadline daypublished at 06:30 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2014

It's better than Christmas Day for football fans. You get an early night the day before, possibly even book the day itself off work.

    Then you wait.

You wait for the presents your chairman bestows on your club, you wait for other clubs to come and plunder your rivals' star player, and you wait for the clock to tick over to 11pm. Then we all, as one, take a deep breath and lie down.

But until the transfer window closes, it's going to be lively. Things could move quicker than Usain Bolt nipping out for his Friday night chippy tea. And that's fast, believe me.

    In summary, don't go anywhere.
