It's time for us to wrap up and wave goodbye, although it's more of a fond farewell. A peck on the cheek, if you wish, and a see you next time, rather than an antagonistic wave and a jig from the sidelines. There will be more live text commentary on the beautiful game on Saturday when Mike Henson returns to the hot seat. Bye for now.

  2. Anything is possible - Kaboulpublished at 22:14 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2014

Tottenham captain Younes Kaboul: "We started the game well, brightly, but we conceded a goal - I don't even know where it came from. We should be marking better after conceding from two set pieces.

"We have to give it our all next week. We have a big squad and need to work harder on the pitch. In football, anything is possible and we will go there to win."

Lyon were the big winners tonight as they came from a goal down to beat Viktoria Plzen 4-1, with Gueida Fofana scoring twice.

AZ Alkmaar also won at home as they beat Anzhi Makhachkala thanks to Aron Johannsson's first-half penalty. Meanwhile, Sevilla will fancy their chances of progressing after they won 2-0 at Real Betis, while it's perfectly poised in the all-Italian clash as Fiorentina came back to secure a 1-1 draw at Juventus.

I said earlier that Benfica manager Jorge Jesus waved towards the Tottenham bench after his side's third goal. Scrap that. After a closer look at replays, the Benfica boss appeared to direct three fingers at the Spurs staff. At least he didn't do it after Benfica's second goal, I suppose.

Can Tottenham overhaul a two-goal deficit in the return leg? If this match has set the tone for what is to come in Portugal then it seems unlikely.

There was no handshake between the managers. Tim Sherwood simply turns his back and walks towards the tunnel. I'm not an expert on these things, but I think that is called the cold shoulder.

Jason Roberts at White Hart Lane

"Benfica handled this like a team with a lot of experience at this level, while Tottenham looked like a team without a cohesive plan. Tactically Benfica were the better side, they had a plan and they stuck to it and on the night they were the better side.

"Everyone will be disappointed but it could have been worse, Benfica could have scored more."

Patrick from Southampton, via text: Sherwood's public grilling obviously hasn't worked. Not sure he'll be in a job long. Embarrassing.

Mooshi from Guildford, via text: If Spurs beat Arsenal this weekend, the last two games will be all forgotten.

Dan in Farnborough, via text: It kills me watching Spurs this season. We are completely in the wilderness without a plan or prayer seemingly.

Tim Sherwood looks on from the sidelines. Jorge Jesus looks on from the sidelines. Will the pair shake hands? The Benfica manager inches ever closer to the Spurs boss but is unwilling to make the first move. It's like watching would-be teenage sweethearts at a school disco. Who will make the first move? Will anyone make the first move? Who knows.

Another chance for Benfica on the counter-attack but Hugo Lloris stands tall and seconds later referee Jonas Eriksson toots the final whistle.

Opta Joe:, external 3 - This is the first time Spurs have conceded three goals at home in Europe (not including qualifiers) since 1967 (4-3 v Lyon)

  12. Postpublished at 21:53 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2014

We're into the second minute of stoppage time and Benfica are seconds away from becoming the first Portuguese side to win at White Hart Lane.

  13. Europa League updatepublished at 21:51 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2014

Fiorentina are back on level terms at Juventus - Mario Gomez cancelling out Arturo Vidal's early strike.

The news is not so good for Sevilla, though, who now trail 2-0 at home to Real Betis after Salvador Sevilla added to Baptistao's opener. Elsewhere, Lyon now lead Viktoria Plzen 4-1 with Gueida Fofana adding his second of the night.

  14. Postpublished at 21:50 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2014

Benfica manager Jorge Jesus celebrates by waving towards the Tottenham bench and Tim Sherwood is not too pleased by his opposite number's reaction. It's unclear whether the Benfica manager was making reference to Tottenham's future in this season's Europa League or Sherwood's reign as manager.

  15. GOALpublished at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2014

Former Brazilian international Luisao performing like a dead-eyed marksman. Benfica's goal comes from a Nicolas Gaitan free-kick wide on the left. Hugo Lloris parries a header and Luisao follows up, his low shot thundering into the corner.

  16. Substitutionpublished at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2014

Jan Vertonghen is apparently fit enough to play for the final eight minutes so Sandro, who had received a yellow card earlier, is replaced by Nabil Bentaleb.

Paul, via text: How fickle are Spurs fans, were loving Sherwood when winning every week, now calling for Soldado, like he's the saviour with his poor scoring record. Laughable.

Anonymous via text: Fair enough Sherwood speaking his mind about attitude, but he has to make the right decisions too. Why have Kane as a No.10 and Erikeon on the wing when you have Townsend on the bench. Kane is, not yet, a good enough player.

Gavin, via text: Shocking display. Sherwood seems to be the only one who cares. The players don't look bothered anymore.

  18. Postpublished at 21:42 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2014

A little over 10 minutes remaining of the 90 minutes and Tim Sherwood's planned third substitution is ruined somewhat, though perhaps temporarily, because Jan Vertoghen is limping. The Spurs boss holds fire for the moment.
