    Peter Shilton
    England goalkeeper at Italia 90

"From my point of view, I wouldn't have put Chrissy Waddle as last penalty taker. Hand on heart, I would have preferred Peter Beardsley there and maybe have Waddle earlier when there's not quite so much pressure.

"When he walked up to take his penalty I just didn't fancy him somehow. I know it's easy to say that in hindsight but he felt the pressure. Gazza would probably have been the man to take that one for us but his head was gone."

  2. ENGLAND ARE OUT OF THE WORLD CUPpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Heartache. Chris Waddle's miss means that West Germany are into the World Cup final. England are going home.

  3. BALLOONED!published at 18:03 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

It's all over! Waddle takes a bowler's run-up and smashes it miles over the bar. Misery for England, unbridled joy for the West Germans.

  4. SCORES!published at 18:02 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Match point Germany. Shilton again can't get to the ball and now it's up to Chris Waddle to keep England in Italia 90...

  5. SAVED!published at 18:01 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

No! Pearce looks confident as he walks up but he powers it low and Illgner beats it away with his legs. Trouble now for England.

  6. SCORES!published at 18:01 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Pressure, what pressure? Top corner, not a chance for Shilton. Pearce next up for England...

  7. SCORES!published at 18:00 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Illgner gets a glove on it but just enough height on it from Platt. Pressure back on West Germany...

  8. SCORES!published at 17:59 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Shilton is a bit slow going down and he can't resist a powerful effort from the Germany skipper. All square again.

  9. SCORES!published at 17:59 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

How cool is that? He's not had the best game but Beardsley sticks it in the top corner. You don't save those.

  10. SCORES!published at 17:58 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Shilton nearly gets there but that's right in the bottom corner. Great spot-kick.

  11. SCORES!published at 17:57 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Power from England's main man. Drills it low and hard. Advantage England.

Harry:, external Walker. What a good player he was in his pomp... totally nullified Klinsmann in this game.

Steven:, external This is my first memory of watching England; I was nine and remember clearly practising penalties with my brother for weeks after.

Lauren:, external Is it wrong that there's still a little bit of me that thinks we can win this?

  14. Postpublished at 17:56 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

    This is a long wait!

What on earth must be going through these players' minds?

Billy:, external Glad to hear Robson has said Pearce will take one. Stonewall to score. Always does for Forest.

    Trevor Brooking
    Former England midfielder

"Whatever happens it has been a magnificent match. I thought England's game against Cameroon was probably the best match of the tournament but this has surpassed it. I certainly wouldn't like to be taking any of the penalties. As we saw with Italy and Argentina last night, it is such a nerve-wracker. Whoever misses, on either side, will have our sympathy."

  17. Postpublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Both sides appear to be ready. Or as ready as they can be anyway. Good luck, and may the best side win...

    Peter Shilton
    England goalkeeper at Italia 90

"It was my first shootout. We knew what it was all about. There's more emphasis on them now but it was the first time England had played in one.

"Bobby Robson went with his proven takers early, Gary Lineker and Peter Beardsley, but we only had four who definitely wanted to take one. At the end I think Bobby just said to Chris Waddle, you're having one."

  19. Postpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

I'm not sure Paul Gascoigne will be taking one. His head has been frazzled by that yellow card.

  20. WE GO TO PENALTIESpublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Take a look at these pictures we've just been sent from our colleagues on Grandstand television. Gazza looks absolutely distraught as we await penalties.
