This is becoming unbearable. Since they went ahead West Germany have pretty much set up camp and are happy to see this one out. They know they've had a real test.
World Cup Grandstand commentator John Motson in Turin
"With about 17 minutes left Germany are looking likely winners to make it through to the World Cup final but England have still got an awful lot of optimism and intent, there is no way the spirit of this side will be broken."
'God Save the Queen' rings out around the Stadio delle Alpi. I'm sure she's watching, and she'll be gripped by the tension as we all are.
Just over 15 minutes left.
It's been an excellent five minutes for England, who have West Germany pegged back now. You just get the feeling that they will get one clear chance in the final stages, it may just come down to whether or not they can take it...
Football statisticians Opta, external on Twitter: Paul Gascoigne embarked on 56 dribbles at #WC90, 20 more than any other player (Chris Waddle was 2nd with 36).
Here comes that change - Trevor Steven on for Terry Butcher. So 4-4-2 then, with Rangers man Steven adding some nip and pace down the right.
Tom:, external Come on Bobby, get Bully on! He has been in deadly form for Wolves this season. Surely the man to get us back into this?!
I tell you what, that's a penalty all day long...
Penalty! Referee!
Chris Waddle jinks into the box and is tripped, surely? No, nothing given by referee Jose Wright...
It's getting toward gamble time for Bobby Robson. Against Cameroon he took Terry Butcher off and went 4-4-2, that could be an option again.
As it is it's Germany who make a change - Thomas Hassler is replaced by Stefan Reuter...
England have a free-kick in a similar position at the other end, it's blocked away by West Germany and Paul Parker is then booked as he clatters Guido Buchwald on the touchline. Get your head together Paul.
Paul:, external Never seen that little debate before between Beardsley and Parker prior to the Brehme goal. Peter knew!
Gary, Chelmsford: Sweating at the memory of it all. Slept that night under a fir tree in a churchyard after drowning my sorrows with a few too many shandies.
Close! Stuart Pearce gets ahead of his man to flick on Peter Beardsley's cross, it is inches away from the top corner!
Spirited response from England. Can they get out of this one?
Bobby Robson looks empty on the sidelines. It was a huge nick off off Paul Parker - could Shilts have got that?
They've got half an hour to save it...
Trevor Brooking
Former England midfielder
"It's so disappointing to concede a goal like that. People have been saying that we have had all of the luck during the tournament but that was so unlucky. This is a test of character now."
Peter Shilton
England goalkeeper at Italia 90
"I was happy with the wall and the way I had everything lined up but they then tapped it square which changed the angle. I changed my position to narrow the angle, I was three or four yards off my line which I was happy with. I was confident I had it covered. Paul Parker went out to close the ball down and it hits him and loops up quite viciously. I just couldn't get it, it clipped the bar and goes in.
"As a keeper it's the worst scenario you can find yourself in, you're rendered helpless. You've just got to hope the ball goes over really, and I actually thought it was going to hit the crossbar. It was in the one place I couldn't get it and after playing pretty well throughout the game I thought that was going to decide the match."
Disaster! The free-kick is rolled to Andreas Brehme, his shot takes a huge deflection off the shins of Paul Parker and loops over the head of Peter Shilton, who can't get back to keep it out.
It had been coming...
Trevor Brooking
Former England midfielder
"For the first time the German fans are beginning to make a bit of noise as their team enjoys a period of pressure, Lothar Matthaus has been creeping forward and the German defenders have been taking turns in coming forward on the attack to test the England defence because in that first half they always had numbers back."
