Marc:, external How can Brooking be defending Gazza there? Heartbreaking for him, but a completely foolish tackle.

Jay:, external Oh no Gascoigne!! Who knows that image may be iconic in years to come.

Jonathan:, external "Have a word with him."

It was a foul from Gazza, no doubt about that, he caught Thomas Berthold. Perhaps it was a booking but it seems terribly harsh.

But now he has to settle himself down and help his side through.

  7. FAST FORWARDpublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Paul Gascoigne: "The ball ran loose and I thought I could get there. I suppose I'd have to say the occasion got to me, but this German guy is 6ft 5in and he dives and screams like a baby.

"For a couple of minutes I was going around in a daze. My whole world had been shattered. I had gone out of my way to steer clear of trouble and there I was - out of the World Cup final if we had won."

  8. FAST FORWARDpublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Gary Lineker signals to England bench

Bobby Robson: "At the time of the booking, he was probably a bit rattled. Gary Lineker knows him well and he came over to the bench and shouted at us to watch Gazza for the next five minutes."

  9. Postpublished at 17:28 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

    Trevor Brooking
    Former England midfielder

"Paul Gascoigne is almost in tears. There's no need to book him there, he's got tired legs. He's shattered.

"It's been a gripping match and I just hope that doesn't affect his performance.

"All the Germany bench were up, encouraging the referee to book him. To miss the final after the tournament he has had would be a travesty."

  10. YELLOW CARDpublished at 17:28 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

...and Paul Gascoigne is booked! He will miss the final now, should England go through. He looks shattered by that decision...

  12. FAST FORWARDpublished at 17:27 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

    Peter Shilton
    England goalkeeper at Italia 90

"Funnily enough, I thought more about the prospect of penalties during the Belgium match in the second round. We ended up winning it in the last minute of extra time but it was such a close game that I thought it would probably go to penalties.

"The Germany game was actually very open in extra time so I always felt like there would be a goal."

Daniel:, external There's something about Gazza that makes me think of Ross Barkley.

Lee:, external Big Dave Beasant on the bench there for England. One cap wonder!

Henry:, external Des Walker was the complete defender - loads of pace, could pass the ball and read the game so well.

  14. CLOSE!published at 17:26 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Oh what a chance! West Germany should really be ahead as that man Jurgen Klinsmann escapes from Mark Wright again, this time running on to a lofted through ball and flashing a left-footed shot across the face of goal.

He rather scuffed that one, but I think old Peter Shilton was beaten that time.

  15. GREAT SAVE!published at 17:24 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

    Shilton! Yes!

Jurgen Klinsmann has been kept quiet all game but he has a first sighter of goal, rising magnificently to meet Andreas Brehme's cross from the left, but Peter Shilton has the reflexes of a man half his age to fly to his left and push it away! Fine stop big man...

  16. Postpublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

Tremendous run from Paul Gascoigne, beating two men down the left wing but he can't quite pick out Chris Waddle inside him. You could cut the tension with your bare hands.

  17. Postpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

World Cup Grandstand commentator John Motson in Turin

"The England team have never been involved in a penalty shootout and I should imagine that if it did happen for the first time in a World Cup semi-final then I think none of us could stand the tension.

"Can England go one step further and complete something of a dream - because nobody thought this team would get as close to the World Cup final as this."

  18. Postpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 7 June 2014

A nice bright start from Chrissy Waddle, dropping the shoulder and beating his man down the left. Get him on the ball.
