Sunderland manager Gus Poyet: "I don't know if you will see something similar ever again. We are the second team in the Premier League to be bottom at Christmas and stay up. With City, Chelsea and United away from home, to be seven points away from safety and to do it with a game to spare is amazing.

"It's been an incredibly difficult season. For moments it looked like we were going down. I will start believing in miracles from now on and it's one of the best days of my life today."

Christopher Jones:, external Sunderland are the new Wigan! Rubbish until April and then excellent in the last two months of the season.

Iain Clark:, external Next time I watch the Great Escape it better be Poyet and not Steve McQueen coming out the cooler. Well done Sunderland.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert: "I thought we did fantastic. I am really proud of the team and the nerves were starting to set in. I didn't think it was easy for them, I couldn't be prouder of my own team.

"They are in the driving seat but you never know on the last day of the season."

  4. How's stat?published at 22:21 British Summer Time 7 May 2014

Manchester City now have three players with 15+ goals this season (Edin Dzeko 16, Sergio Aguero 17 and Yaya Toure 19). They are the first team ever in the Premier League to have three players with at least 15 goals in a single season.

Yaya Toure scored his 20th goal of the season - the fourth most ever for a midfielder in a single PL season, behind Gareth Bale (21 in 2012/13), Frank Lampard (22 in 2009/10) and Cristiano Ronaldo (25 in 2007/08). He goes clear of Matt Le Tissier, who got 19 in 1994/95).

  5. Norwich all but relegatedpublished at 22:17 British Summer Time 7 May 2014

Don in Norwich, via text: Us Canaries wanted a change of manager at Christmas because we could all see us going down playing ugly, careless, passionless football. Imagine if we got Pulis in January!

Daniel, via text: As a Norwich fan living in Derby I have been resigned to the fact we were down since Hughton got sacked. Credit to Adams as he has actually got us playing with passion again, as seen in the games against Fulham, Liverpool and Chelsea. One last decent performance against Arsenal and we will return. LET'S BE HAVIN' YOU.

To sum up Manchester City's dominance tonight, Pablo Zabaleta created six chances from right-back while his mate on the opposite side of defence, Aleksandar Kolarov, made two opportunities. What a combination those two are!

Christian Cordina:, external The title is measured over 38 games. Doesn't matter if City only lead the table for 11 days - they were superb all season.

Belligerent Savage:, external City epitomise 'slow and steady wins the race'. Hardly been 1st all year but kept in touching distance, waiting to pounce

Samuel Ball:, external Any team who wins the title are worthy of being champions - after 38 matches, the league table never lies.

    French Ligue 1

Paris St-Germain suffered defeat against Rennes in the French capital this evening, but their fans won't mind much... they were champions before they even kicked a ball tonight following Monaco's draw with Guingamp. It's party-time for Zlatan and Co in Paris!

Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko, who scored two goals, speaking to Sky Sports: "We played good football in the first half, they didn't have any chances but the manager said just to be calm and we would get what we wanted.

"When the team defend with 10 players in the box it's always about the first goal, it was very important. Once we got it gaps opened up and we scored more. In the end it looked easy with 4-0 but it wasn't.

"We have to concentrate on Sunday, we did our job today but we have to take the last game very seriously because it will be very tough and we will give everything, the experience of two years ago means we will approach it differently."

Tom Peck:, external [Re: 21:50 entry] It's a very misleading stat. City had games in hand for ages because of success elsewhere. Worthy champs, no doubt.

Sunderland defender John O'Shea: "We stuck together as a group and, thankfully, the last few weeks we have gone on an amazing run. After the League Cup final defeat we had a lull and everyone thought we were in trouble but we took care of things tonight."

Shobhit Maruti:, external City should park the open top bus in the last match then use the same bus for their parade.

Amir Hedjazi:, external Why do people say City win title with another point? Liverpool could easily beat us [Newcastle] 14-0 at Anfield!

George Uppington:, external Man City top for just 11 days? Try being a Gashead [Bristol Rovers fan]. In the L2 relegation zone for one day. The day we went down!

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini: "The team was not only very patient, we played very well. We pressed well, had possession of the ball. We tried to move the ball as fast as we can and created two or three chances.

"I was absolutely sure if we continued to play the same way we would find the space to score a goal.

"Now we can talk about the title. We must win the last game against West Ham.

"The power of Yaya is unbelievable. 100 goals in the Premier League is a good amount of goals."

BBC Radio 5 live's Danny Mills at Etihad Stadium

"It was a little bit like watching the Manchester United of old, City had belief and just kept playing their football and the goal came. Once City scored the result was never in doubt and I think they deserve to win the title. They are the leading scorers, they have the second best defensive record and they deserve it."

    Spanish La Liga

While Manchester City are seemingly closing in on the Premier League title, Real Madrid's ambitions of winning the Spanish version are disappearing quickly.

Valladolid sub Osorio planted a bullet header into the far corner from a right-wing corner to wipe out Madrid's lead in the dying stages - and a point is unlikely to be enough for the visitors.

Real boss Carlo Ancelotti stands stony faced at the final whistle and he knows that, although his team are not mathematically out of the running yet, it will be difficult to overhaul Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. A point will leave Real four points behind Atletico with two matches left.

Manchester City defender Pablo Zabaleta, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was very difficult - if you don't score early, sometimes it can be hard but the key was we worked hard, we found space and we stayed patient.

"It was a very solid performance, nothing is won yet but it was very important to win here tonight.

"It was a massive step forward but there is still one game to play. West Ham have nothing to play for but they have some very good players and can score goals.

"The spirit is great here, the players work very hard, we kept the belief when we were in third place and now we are here, we have a great chance and hopefully on Sunday we can celebrate the title."
