Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback: "After the Tottenham and Everton games everyone wrote us off but I think that helped us. To get the win tonight makes it feel good, I feel relief. It's been a long, tough season. Gus Poyet has been brilliant since he came in. He is positive and gives us belief. We had spells where we struggled but we've managed to pull it out of the bag somehow."

David in Worcs: The relegated clubs all sacked a decent manager in the 2nd half of the season and finished lower than they were before. Will any lessons be learnt? In a word, no.

Keith, the blue Manc: A good professional game by City with good game management. Silva is different class. A disgrace he has not got an award.

    French Ligue 1

Almost a way back into the match for Aston Villa and a glimmer of hope for Liverpool when Andreas Weimann's close-range header hits the bar and bounces down on the goal-line before being hacked clear by Vincent Kompany. There were centimetres in that, but technology correctly rules that the ball didn't cross the line.

    Spanish La Liga

Just over a quarter of Real Madrid's vital game in hand over La Liga title rivals Atletico Madrid and Barcelona to go. Carlo Ancelotti's side still lead through Sergio Ramos's first-half free kick, but relegation-threatened Valladolid are cranking up the pressure.

Ex-Barcelona youngster Jeffren sits up a delightful right-wing cross which is met by an acrobatic overhead kick from team-mate Javi Guerra. Madrid keeper Iker Casillas is rooted to his spot but is grateful to see the ambitious effort trundle wide.

The visitors will move within two points of leaders Atletico, with two matches left apiece, if they see out a win.

BBC Sport's David Ornstein at Etihad Stadium

"The Etihad has erupted following those two goals that have taken City a step closer to the Premier League title. The reaction of the fans and players certainly suggests they believe they're nearly there. Even the usually-restrained Manuel Pellegrini allows himself a jig of delight and his backroom staff go wild. The noise inside this place is now ear-splitting as the City fans showcase their full repertoire - "Blue Moon", "We're not really here" and so on. It's lashing it down but they're singing in the rain and will be all night if their team see it out."

Yaya Toure's free-kick from the very edge of the penalty area is deflected wide for a corner. The centre is whipped in but easily dealt with by Aston Villa.
