    Former England defender Phil Neville

"It was a wonderful third-man run from Danny Welbeck, pulling Gabriel Paletta out and Italy don't look comfortable defending in the wide areas.

"These are good opportunities for England. The corner looked like something they've worked on, with Phil Jagielka blocking Wayne Rooney's man. It's still hot out there and particularly in the second half you'll see both teams play in little bursts."

"How lucky are Italy there? Andrea Barzagli gets a touch with his right foot - it looped up and past the far post for a corner with Daniel Sturridge waiting. From the resulting set piece it almost falls to Wayne Rooney and the Italian defence are looking very shaky."

England up to 35% of possession now. It's been a decent game all round, chances at both ends. Wayne Rooney is still a passenger mind...

  4. CLOSE!published at 23:24 British Summer Time 14 June 2014

Almost! Danny Welbeck beats his man on the right and puts in a low cross, Andrea Barzagli toes it up in the air and Daniel Sturridge is inches away from a tap-in.

From the corner, stand-in keeper Salvatore Sirigu flaps at it and Wayne Rooney can't convert.

    Don't let him shoot there!

Mario Balotelli rolls away into space and crashes a shot over the top from 20 yards. He's on player cam now.

Quality from Raheem Sterling again! He takes on his man on the left, does him like a kipper and then drills in a low cross which Danny Welbeck can't quite reach in the six-yard box.

Well played Raheem my son, well played...

Daniele De Rossi and Andrea Pirlo have completed 74 passes already between them. England's most have come from Steven Gerrard, on 12.

    Former England defender Phil Neville

"The out-ball for Italy is on the right and Matteo Darman has started the game well. Antonio Candreva is playing in little pockets and it's difficult for Leighton Baines to pick him up.

"Candreva's shot looked like it had a lot of swerve on it and again he picked it up in the inside right. Roy Hodgson must be thinking about swapping Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney because Wayne Rooney's just not looking comfortable out there."

    Brazuca attack!

Antonio Candreva shoots from 25 yards, there's a lot of wobble on the ball and Joe Hart makes a mess of dealing with it, eventually collecting at the second attempt.

Darran:, external Hands up who thought we just scored?

Stephen:, external Sturridge. Pace. Terrifying for any defender.

Steven:, external Yet another game where the teams have decided they actually want to play football. Must be because they are in Brazil. Lucky us!

"England are allowing Italy to have the ball but they are staying organised. The only slight problem is that the Italian full-backs are getting forward and England are not picking them up.

"Antonio Candreva and Marco Verratti are also finding a little too much space in behind Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson in support of Mario Balotelli- that is where England are looking like they could be in trouble."

This is nice. England link up really sharply in the final third but it ends with a whimper, Glen Johnson shooting wide on his left side.

    Decent start from both sides.

BBC Sport Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty in Manaus

"Early problems for England coming down the left flank, where Leighton Baines is being isolated and the Italians are getting some success. Wayne Rooney is out on that side and may need to offer greater protection to the Everton defender."

  15. Postpublished at 23:13 British Summer Time 14 June 2014

An excellent sense of adventure from England when they do get on the ball, as Daniel Sturridge takes his man on around the outside and beats him for pace, he drives into the box near the dead-ball line and is eventually smothered. They are not afraid to run it.

"Yes it hit Glen Johnson on the hand but it was right by his side, and there was nothing he could do from that range.

"It's been a good game so far, England are playing on the counter-attack but are having to concede too much possession and they will have to be wary of Andrea Pirlo and Marco Verratti in the final third - they can both play that little dink over the back."

  17. Postpublished at 23:12 British Summer Time 14 June 2014

    Former England defender Phil Neville

"Danny Welbeck will be disappointed he didn't hit the target there. When Italy lose possession, the first pass has to go into Daniel Sturridge or Raheem Sterling."

  18. CLOSE!published at 23:11 British Summer Time 14 June 2014

That's better from England, and it comes through Raheem Sterling again. He is quick and direct, he is tackled but the Italians then cough up possession ins a dangerous area and Danny Welbeck slams a low shot wide.

  19. Postpublished at 23:10 British Summer Time 14 June 2014

    Former England defender Phil Neville

"Antonio Candreva is playing in that pocket on the right and Wayne Rooney has to help Leighton Baines a little bit more. Every time Andrea Pirlo gets the ball, Jordan Henderson is locking against him and not letting him have time on the ball, which is very important."

  20. Postpublished at 23:10 British Summer Time 14 June 2014

Italy on 75% of possession so far. England trying to close down but not really disrupting them as yet.
