"Uruguay will be thinking if they beat England they've got a great chance. I wouldn't rule England but but there are things to work on."

"If you win against Uruguay you can play that third game and be able to qualify against Costa Rica but you've put yourself in a position where it might be your last chance.

"Lose against Uruguay and you're going home. Luis Suarez will play for sure."

Tim:, external Baines' big-game experience lacking, Rooney worked hard but lacking, hopefully the Ox is fit. Cannot falter anyone else.

Alex:, external First time in a while it was enjoyable to watch England, shame about the result.

Daul:, external I actually felt England were in it until the end. When was the last time that happened in a tournament when they were losing?

"Raheem Sterling had cramp and he ran like a crazy horse but in the 92nd minute he was chasing back. He made a foul but he was there."

England manager Roy Hodgson to BBC Sport: "We were hoping for a perfect start but we don't live in a perfect world.

"In the second half we did everything but score. I suppose you have to bite the bullet. We are not the sort of team to sit back and unfortunately it left one or two opportunities for Italy to get the ball in. I thought Raheem Sterling was very dangerous throughout the game. Danny Welbeck had some good moments and Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson did everything expected of them.

"It's very tough to accept that we have lost the game. But the performance gives us great confidence going forward. I thought Wayne Rooney did very well and set up our goal. We know he can play in different positions and he can be satisfied with his performance. Yes, of course we can still qualify but we're still bit downhearted."

Raheem Sterling is getting the praise from the BBC pundits, and rightly so. He was a very bright shining light for England tonight.

Uruguay will be scared of facing him, for sure.

A reminder that that game is on Thursday evening, with a 20:00 BST kick-off.

QPR midfielder Joey Barton:, external The key stats - England passes 425/468 Italy 561/602. When will we learn? We can still make it but Barkley, Wilshere and Shaw must start.

Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton:, external Unlucky England. We looked good out there!

TV personality Ant from Ant and Dec:, external Before the inevitable outcry about the result. Can I say well done England. I haven't seen an England team want the ball more in years.

    Former England defender Rio Ferdinand

"I was surprised Ashley Cole wasn't in the squad because he has been the best left-back or challenging the best the world for the last 10 years. His experience in that back four, which hasn't had a lot of tournament football, is vital.

"For Leighton Baines it was a tough night for him because he was being asked questions positionally. Maybe he wasn't helped in front of him but they are questions you have to work out for yourself sometimes in games."

George: Thought Baines had a really poor game tonight. He was completely off the pace in defence and in attack he didn't seem to want to pass the ball forward.

Faisal, Manchester: Rooney played poorly but was played out of position. Gerrard played poorly in his best position.

Joe, Stevenage: Lots of positives. Think Barkley should start instead of Welbeck on the left of the three with Rooney in the centre and Sterling on the right.

    Former England midfielder Danny Murphy

"Antonio Candreva was superb. He caused us all sorts of problems we weren't sure where to pick him up. We struggled with him all evening.

"Daniel Sturridge got off the mark and he was brilliant. Raheem Sterling was great on his competitive debut and again tired a little bit. When you lose the first game it creates pressure and Uruguay is a huge game.

"If we play with that attacking verve and make that many chances we'll go through."

    • England have conceded six goals in their last two World Cup games, as many as the previous 13 games combined.

    • Wayne Rooney's assist for Daniel Sturridge was the first time he has contributed to a goal in the World Cup (in his ninth appearance).

    • Daniel Sturridge has scored in three of his last four appearances for England.

    • England have lost their opening game at a World Cup for the first time since 1986 (lost 0-1 v Portugal but reached quarter-finals).

    • Italy have scored in each of their last 15 World Cup matches, an Italian record and the longest current run of any side in World Cup.

    • Just four of 46 sides to lose their opening group game since 1998 have gone on to qualify for the knockout stages (Spain in 2010, Ukraine and Ghana in 2006 and Turkey in 2002).

    • Andrea Pirlo made 108 passes, the most so far in a 2014 World Cup match. De Rossi also topped 100 passes (105).

    Thierry Henry
    Former France and Arsenal striker

"When you look at Wayne Rooney's chance there he's in the best position that you can be. I've missed goals like that but he has to understand and people have to understand he has to score there. He had a good game but that was the turning point of the game for me.

"He did everything he had to do there but score. I know he might get hammered tomorrow but people have to be positive about him. You want him to be positive and he knows that he should have scored but he shouldn't be killed tomorrow. He's a great player and a go-to player.

"England were knocking on the door. They weren't out-played. In the last 20 minutes they were lacking that last little touch."

    Chris Waddle
    BBC Radio 5 live

"You learn from games like this hopefully and I have always said that this tournament would be a good education for France 2016, where I think we could really compete. We're not too far away. People actually enjoyed having the ball at their feet and there are exciting players off the bench.

"But for me, if you're not going to play Wayne Rooney as a number 10, then don't play him at all."

  20. Media reactionpublished at 01:07 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

    Daily Telegraph's Henry Winter

"Joe Hart just been over to the #eng fans, punching his chest, acknowledging their support. He needs better protection from defence."

    Independent's Sam Wallace

"Struggling to think of a better England performance since Euro 2004. But they were up against a ruthlessly brilliant Italy team tonight."

    Mirror's Oliver Holt

"If England play like that against Uruguay and Costa Rica, there is no reason to think that they cannot still go through to second round."
