    Altitude: 800m (2,624ft).

Climate: Dry and warm. June and July tend to be the coolest months of the year, but temperatures still peak at 25C most days.

    Time Zone: GMT -3 hours.

Approximate distance from Rio: 278 miles.

Where is it?: Surrounded by mountains inland from Rio and Sao Paulo.

    Fixtures: 14 June, Colombia 2-1 Greece 21 June, Argentina v Iran, 17:00; 24 June, Costa Rica v England, 17:00; 17 June, Belgium v Algeria, 17:00; 28 June, Second-round, Winner Group A v Runner-up Group B, 17:00; 8 July, Semi-final, Winner Quarter-final 1 v Winner Quarter-final 2, 21:00.

Background: It took three years and 695 million Brazilian reais (£185m) to give the historic Estadio Mineirao a comprehensive facelift. The stadium is a listed national monument, so the facade and roof had to be preserved, but the pitch was lowered by 3.4m to allow the removal of a running track and construction of new seating nearer to the pitch.

Although it was the second World Cup venue to be completed, in February 2013, teething problems resulted in the stadium's operators being fined. However, Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke described the stadium as "beautiful" prior to the Confederations Cup, when it hosted three games . It will also host football at the 2016 Olympics.

"Estadio Mineirao is filling up nicely as kick-off approaches and the first impression you get on walking in is just how many Argentina fans are going to be inside this 57,000-capacity bowl of a ground. I can see one main pocket of Iran supporters and a scattering of Brazil shirts, but everywhere else is blue and white.

"Belo Horizonte translates to mean "beautiful horizon" and this must be one of the World Cup's more eye-catching areas."

  9. Time to say goodbyepublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 21 June 2014

Iran coach Carlos Queiroz will step down after the World Cup because of a lack of government financial backing.

The former Manchester United assistant manager has long bemoaned a lack of cash for the team, mainly caused by political restrictions placed on Iran.

"Yes my connection will finish here at the World Cup," confirmed Queiroz, 61.

"There was not support from the government - there has stopped being a genuine interest because of the financial situation."

  12. Iran up for a Cupset?published at 16:18 British Summer Time 21 June 2014

Iran have already got on the board after a goalless draw with Nigeria in their World Cup opener.

Can they spring a major shock today?

They have won just one game in 10 World Cup attempts but drew 1-1 with Argentina in the sides' only other meeting in a 1977 friendly.

"You have to give credit to Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella for changing the tactics at half time against Bosnia. They looked sharper, happier and far more of an attacking threat. They played like strangers in the first half and were better in the second half though defensively they didn't look great.

"I think in the main in this game it will be attack against defence and a case of how long Iran can hold out for."

When you are one of the best two players of your generation, average just won't cut it.

Lionel Messi was disappointing for long spells of Argentina's opener against Bosnia but then lit the game up with a superb solo goal, his first in a World Cup finals since his opening match back in 206.

The relief was palpable. The goal was sensational.

Will the little genius pile on the end product against Iran?

Iran fan ahead of the World Cup match with Argentina

"Belo Horizonte is bathed in glorious sunshine and absolutely rammed with fans as kick-off approaches. Tens of thousands of them are wearing the blue and white of Argentina, but there are plenty of Iran and Brazil supporters scattered around too.

"The costume of choice for the Brazilians appears to be the Arabic thiyab and keffiyeh (robe and head scarf), so there's little doubt who they'll be cheering on today. Everyone seems to be enjoying the pre-match festivities as musicians, dancers and food sellers help create a carnival atmosphere."
