The Desert Foxes have come roaring out. It's been a positive start and all the early exchanges are inside the South Korea half.

Islam Slimani, unmarked and eight yards out, heads a corner into the side netting. Will Algeria be made to pay for these early missed chances?

    Algeria penalty appeal

"For me, it looks a pen. He has made a meal of it but you can see the contact and you have seen them given. Someone had better tell South Korea there is a match on and it is a World Cup game.

"Algeria have started very brightly. They won't be able to keep it up."

  4. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 20:05 British Summer Time 22 June 2014

Chaos in the South Korea penalty area. It's like pin-ball as their defence fail to deal with another attack and Yacine Brahimi hooks the ball over from close range.

There were shouts for a penalty in the build-up to that chance. South Korea have yet to settle down.

"Algeria get behind the ball but then they break quickly. They have a lot of willing runners and they like to get people forward quickly. Once they lose the ball, they retreat and they get a good shape."

"For an hour of their opening match against Belgium, Algeria played very well, they were well organised but they don't commit many men forward.

South Korea are building for the future. Fourteen of the squad are 25 or younger. Defensive naiveties, as they showed in the 1-1 draw with Russia, have been their recent Achilles heel.

They have won just one of their last six games and conceded 12 goals in the process. Manager Hong Myung-bo, captain and key defender of South Korea's 2002 semi-final team, has been working hard to try and shore up that issue.

Defender Kim Young-gwon believes their World Cup opener has improved their match sharpness: "We didn't have a lot of players with World Cup experience, but after getting the first match out of the way, I think we have regained our confidence."

Despite losing 2-1 to Belgium, Vahid Halilhodzic's Algeria impressed in their first game.

The Desert Foxes began the World Cup with the least experienced squad at the World Cup, averaging just 16 caps per player.

A mature showing against Belgium belied that fact but the pressure is now on them to turn performances into points as they look to advance out of the group stage for the very first time.

Halilhodzic has told his squad: "Now is not the time for crying, this match is decisive."

This is South Korea and Algeria's first World Cup encounter. Their only previous meeting was in a friendly on 14 December 1985 in Mexico, with the game ending in a 2-0 win for South Korea.

Sofiane Feghouli's goal from the penalty spot against Belgium was the only shot that Algeria managed to hit on target in their opening 2014 World Cup game.

South Korea have won just one of their last six World Cup group stage games.

Algeria have finished bottom of their group stage table with one point in each of their last two World Cup finals.

Tim Sherwood might be unemployed right now but the former Tottenham manager is highly regarded in Algeria.

During his brief stint in charge at White Hart Lane, Sherwood gave Nabil Bentaleb his Premier League debut in his first game in charge against Southampton in December 2013, and the 19-year-old's passing, ball retention and composure won plaudits galore.

The France-born midfielder, who finished the season having made 15 Premier League appearances, starts his second game of the World Cup.

Bentaleb could have played for England in the future, qualifying on residency rules in 2017. But he was persuaded to play for the country of his parents' birth.
