Back in Brasilia, the pace of the game has dropped a touch. Brazil know they are almost home and dry. But they are still searching for a fourth, Oscar pulling all the strings as they look to break down the Cameroon defence.

"Darijo Srna knows what he is doing. He sticks his hand out and goes down like the ball hit his face when it hits his hands. Very cute play but definitely a penalty."

  4. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 22:24 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

Surely a penalty for Mexico? No! The Mexicans are going loco at referee Ravshan Irmatov. Andres Guardado's shot is clearly handled by Croatia skipper Darijo Srna. Not just with the one hand either, but both. The referee is having none of it. Coach Miguel Herrera looks as though he is about to burst a blood vessel as he remonstrates with the fourth official.

As things stand, Mexico are going through to the last 16 having scored just once. Who said this was an attacking World Cup? Boss Miguel Herrera introduces Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez in a like-for-like swap with Giovani Dos Santos.

  8. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 22:17 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

And right on cue, Croatia make an attacking change. Bright young thing Mateo Kovacic, the Inter Milan playmaker, replaces defender Sime Vrsaljko.

  9. Postpublished at 22:15 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

Croatia have shown a bit more urgency about their play in the second half - and boy do they need to. They are 35 minutes away from packing their bags. The Europeans are enjoying hogging the ball but are unable to create a decent chance. Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic hasn't had a sniff and neither - to his delight - has Mexico keeper Guillermo Ochoa.

"What a ball from David Luiz on his left foot. Fred was unmarked, simple header. That is a huge relief for him because he has been poor but that goal is massive for him."

Here he is! Fred finally comes to the Brazilian party, nodding in from close range after he is picked out by David Luiz's left-wing cross. Only David Luiz knows what he was doing there. Was Fred offside? Maybe. But he doesn't care as he roars in celebration.

"Great start to the second half for Brazil. Hulk has to score though when he goes through on goal. The key thing for Scolari now is when to bring Neymar off, the last thing they want is to get him injured or booked and suspended."

Charles Itandje is a busy man in these early stages. His palms are stung again as Neymar arrows a free-kick towards his goal.

Ross in London on text: Other than Neymar this Brazil team is pretty average, can't see them winning the World Cup. How Fred still gets in the starting XI I'll never know, then again their next best striker is a Man City flop! Argentina have Aguero, Higuain, Messi, Lavezzi and Di Maria as forward options, they'll destroy Brazil!

Two glorious chances in the space of a few seconds for Brazil. Hulk is bundled over (legally) just as he is about to pull the trigger, before Fred's thunderbolt is acrobatically pushed to safety by Cameroon keeper Charles Itandje.
