The best bit about that outrageous cross from Kwadwo Asamoah was the fact that it was entirely unnecessary.

He could have just crossed it in with his left foot but chose to run around the ball and bend it in with the outside of his boot. Sensational.

USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann on his side reaching the last-16 for the second successive World Cup finals: "It's huge for us to reach the last-16. We wanted at least a tie out of the game and maybe at the beginning we had too much respect.

"But overall there was tremendous energy and effort from all of the side. It's huge for us to get out of group - everyone said we had no chance but we took that chance. Now we want to prove a point."

"It is a unbelievable day for US soccer. They were not outstanding on the pitch today but they will always give 100% and be organised. The people back home will love this - we've finished above one the best teams in the world and Portugal and Ronaldo are going home. The next game is going to be a massive occasion."

"It is highly unusual to applaud a team that doesn't have a shot until injury-time but I am going to applaud the Americans because they did enough. Jurgen Klinsmann has got them organised and are playing together as a team.

"The Germans were not impressing with or without the ball today. I can't see how they can go on and win it."

    Former Scotland international Pat Nevin

"Both sides had chances to go through, and they can't blame anyone else but themselves. Cristiano Ronaldo missed six golden opportunities, and should have had a penalty as well. He didn't look fully fit to me.

"A fully-fit Ronaldo could have torn this tournament apart. I don't think Ghana have enough quality going forward; they're far too reliant on Asamoah Gyan."
