Brazil undoubtedly had their fair share of luck but looking at the stats above, few can argue they didn't deserve their victory. Twenty three shots to 13, although Chile did shade the possession.

Aftab: , externalThe only thing that beat Chile was the woodwork. The dream is still alive for Brazil. Neymar handling pressure!

Eric Hangula:, external When you do all you can to succeed but still get kicked in the teeth, that's cruel.

Dan Parris:, external England could learn a lot from those amazing Chileans. And a lot from young Neymar when it comes to a cool head in a shootout.

    Former England captain Rio Ferdinand

"I think Luiz Gustavo is going to be a big miss for Brazil. He is suspended for the quarter final. He has been one of their best players alongside Neymar. The defensive job he does in front of that back four is so important."

"Brazil have got away with it. They have not reached the level they can but they keep getting the luck. Going forward, apart from Neymar, it is a weak point for Brazil. They are reasonably solid defensively but struggle in attack."

Former Brazil international Juninho, speaking to Match of the Day: "Unbelievable. My heart is OK now. We could not go out of this tournament, I am very emotional to see Brazil to go through. I think from here until the end it will be as dramatic as this. We don't know how to play long balls, we need to play the Brazilian way and keep the ball on the floor. Brazil need to improve every game."

How must former Nottingham Forest defender Gonzalo Jara be feeling now? It wasn't even bad a penalty but that will be no consolation. He has to lift himself and try to find a club for next season now. Some hard days ahead.

"It is an emotional moment, certainly for Brazil but of course Chile. They have played so well, they put Spain out and they have given as good as they got today. It is such a shame to see them go out on penalties. They gave Brazil a huge test today."

What an atmosphere inside the Estadio Mineirao. The green and yellow flags are waving and the songs are being sung.

Colombia or Uruguay next for Brazil. You feel they have to improve if they want to get through that.

Football is a cruel, cruel game at times. You have to feel for Chile as they applaud their fans after a heroic 120 minutes of football.

For Brazil, the parties are already starting.
