Yesterday, Louis van Gaal urged Fifa to use the World Cup's first cooling break during the last-16 match against Mexico. Today, Louis van Gaal admits he used the cooling break to help the Netherlands pull of an incredible "escape" against Mexico. Clever. Very clever.

"Yes, I used the breaks. Because first I had changed from 4-3-3 and then we created a lot of opportunities, the shot on the goalpost and a fantastic save by Ochoa. Then I moved to plan B and yes, I did that in the cooling break that is a clever way of benefitting from these breaks.

"Mexico's Miguel Herrera has accused Robben of diving three times and says referee invented the penalty and mugged them."

Strong words from a strong man.

Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal: "The players showed they had faith and belief until the very end.

"The humidity was not in our favour so when you see that until the very last minute we were fresher and fitter than the Mexicans that is a big compliment to my players.

"Not only did they have belief but physically they prepared so well to play this match. That of course gives us enormous confidence going forward."

    Miguel Herrera

Mexico coach Miguel Herrera said: "We'd done really well. Then the team sits back and we start to give chances to a team that had not done anything.

"It's a World Cup where everything was against Mexico. Unfortunately, we didn't achieve what we wanted."

"Knowing the oppressive heat of Fortaleza, this is a remarkable effort from the Dutch. Mexico have been robbened!"

Seems even the UK's leading newspaper journalists can't agree on Arjen Robben. But what can't be disputed is the Dutch flyer's impact on a game. The man is a menace for opposition defenders. The Bayern Munich winger completed seven successful dribbles and was hacked down five times by the Mexicans.

  8. What the media saypublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 29 June 2014

Daily Telegraph football correspondent Henry Winter:, external Robben couldn't have milked it more if he'd turned up with a 3-legged stool & a pail but there was contact from Marquez. Penalty in my honest opinion.

Daily Mirror chief sports writer Oliver Holt:, external Robben didn't cheat. He was fouled. Simple decision for ref.

Times chief sports correspondent Matt Dickinson:, external I can't escape the premise that if you can stay on your feet, you really should try. Robben always does the opposite.

  9. Manager reactionpublished at 19:36 British Summer Time 29 June 2014

    Louis van Gaal

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal in his post-match news conference: "I changed my tactics during the cooling break. Yes, it was an advantage.

"It was an escape. We're going to analyse the next opponent and decide how to play."

Jon, Brentwood: It was never a penalty but leaving your leg sticking out in your own penalty area in the fourth minute of injury time for Arjen Robben to fall over isn't very smart. Once more and for different reasons, Robben has done the business.

Emon Khan:, external Louis van Gaal has tactical nous and instils belief. The Dutch kept going and van Gaal deserves credit for that.

Adam:, external Anyone else sick of seeing Robben arch his back, chuck his hands in the air then throw himself on the floor every two seconds?

Meghan Letourneau:, external Whether or not Robben deserved that penalty kick, he definitely deserved one from before. It was a fair game.

Of course, the Arena Fonte Nova is the scene of the Netherlands' devastating 5-1 thumping of Spain. Happy memories for them.

It is also a stadium which has seen 21 goals in the four World Cup matches held there over the past couple of weeks. Sure we would all settle for that average being maintained next Sunday.

Now the Dutch bandwagon rolls on to Salvador, where they will play either Costa Rica or Greece on Saturday. Salvador - hmmm, why is that flicking a light-bulb in my mind? Oh yes...

Arjen Robben's fall for the decisive penalty is causing all sort of keyboard argument among you lot. Did he dive? Was he clipped? Probably a bit of both in my eyes.

Now you can judge for yourself. Cast your glance to the top of this page and watch our video of the incident. Then, don't be shy in telling us what you think through #bbcworldcup on Twitter or text on 81111.

Kay Vroom:, external Netherlands kept huffing and puffing and eventually Mexico's house fell down. In spectacular style!

Callum Mackenzie:, external Louis van Gaal a genius? Substituting the most anonymous player on the pitch does not make you a genius.

Peter Collins:, external Difference between a dive and going down easy. Arjen Robben WAS caught, he just went down easily and theatrically. Right decision.

"Well, who saw that coming? I had written off the Dutch, written my match report and then, as we have seen so many times in this World Cup, it all changed. What a fantastic result for Netherlands, pure heartbreak for the Mexicans, who left the field in total disbelief. You just get the sense that the Dutch may start to think their name is on this trophy ..."

  19. What next for the Dutch?published at 19:14 British Summer Time 29 June 2014

Tonight will be probably be an (alcohol-free) night of celebrations for Van Gaal and his players before they get their heads down and work towards their quarter-final match. Who will that be against? We will find out shortly. Group D winners Costa Rica (sorry England fans) take on Greece in Recife shortly for the right to face the Dutch.

    Huntelaar

Hands up if you thought it was gamble taking off Robin van Persie for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Guilty, your honour. But this Van Gaal character knows what he is doing. Some might say it was a Fergie-style game-changer...
