Shohidur Rahman:, external Hate the exaggerated dive from Arjen Robben but it was clumsy from Rafael Marquez. Feel so sorry for Mexico.

Chris Gilbert:, external Ridiculous decision. Look at Robben, it couldn't be more of a dive. Mexico don't deserve this.

Derek Young:, external Almost unbelievably cruel on Mexico who were the better team except for the five minutes at the end.

"You have to say you feel sorry for the Mexicans they were brilliant for the first half and maybe 10 minutes of the second. You really believed that their goalkeeper looked unbeatable. But, however you have to do it, whether it is long ball or technical stuff, you find a way to do it and that is what the Netherlands did. Arjen Robben became unplayable at the end of the game. Running with the ball at pace, he was simply astonishing."

So the statistics show that the Dutch had more shots and more possession. Mexico tested the opposition keeper more. But, as we always say, only one statistic counts - and the Dutch edged it.

Nick, Exeter: Credit to Louis van Gaal - great substitution. Assist and goal from Klaas Jan Huntelaar!

Will, Leeds: Was that a goal in Fergie time for van Gaal? He's going to fit in fine at Manchester United.

Mark, Berkshire: Woeful defending by Mexico, they've gifted the Dutch passage.

Contrast that with the delighted expression etched across Dutch boss Louis van Gaal. He knows that he doesn't have to go to Manchester United just yet. Which means he can enjoy the Brazil sunshine at the expense of Salford cloud for another week at least. That's a bonus.

Only the coldest of cold hearts would not feel for the Mexicans. For so long it looked as though they would reach the last-16 for the first time since they hosted the World Cup in 1986. But have failed at the second round for the sixth successive finals after six minutes of total and utter madness.

Mexico coach Miguel Herrera stands with arms folded across his barrel chest, launching a volley of presumably choice words at referee Pedro Proenca as he walks down the tunnel.

All over in Fortaleza! Mexican players drop to the turf in tears. Arjen Robben jumps about four feet off the floor as he punches the sticky Brazilian air in delight.

"Doesn't matter how you do it. You get the job done and that is what Louis van Gaal has done. It is fantastic that they have managed to push Mexico back. How does this work? They are supposed to wilt in these conditions but they have utterly dominated the second half and even when they conceded the equaliser they did not stop. Fair play. What an extraordinary World Cup."

Two minutes for Mexico to salvage something. They can't surely. Can they? Javier Aquino blasts wide.

Gudtin:, external Arjen Robben has been looking for that all day and Mexico gave it away at the last minute!

Mark:, external Wow! That was a bad time to go make a sandwich!

Mexican players pray on the sideline. Huntelaar bounces the ball like 80s goalkeeping legend John Lukic in his hey-day. He looks cool. He is cool! Huntelaar blasts the ball into the bottom corner. What a turnaround.

Arjen Robben jinks dangerously in the Mexican box. He skips one challenge but doesn't need another invite to go down. Rafael Marquez the culprit. Penalty and yellow card. Up steps Klaas-Jan Huntelaar....

Still the Dutch press. There appears to be only one winner, if we get one, as we head into six minutes of stoppage-time.

    Wesley Sneijder shoots

"Heartbreaking for the Mexicans but they have been pushed further and further back. Interestingly it came from route one. Most players would sky that over the crossbar, but not Wesley Sneijder. He kept his head down and smacked it into the back of the net. How must the Mexicans feel now?"

    Wesley Sneijder celebrates

Pick this one out! Wesley Sneijder's eyes light up as a loose ball in the Mexican box falls at his feet and he thumps in to the delight of the Dutch in Fortaleza. Who's up for another 30 minutes of football? That's where we're heading.

"Is this the Netherlands we are watching here? The ball is getting thumped up, Dirk Kuyt playing little knock downs for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Will Louis van Gaal get stick for going route one? I am quite amazed by the tactics now. You never know, Marouane Fellaini might have a future now at Manchester United."

Another Dutch attack - and it is almost a golden chance.

Arjen Robben swings one in from the right and Dirk Kuyt touches through a crowded box to Klass-Jan Huntelaar. The Schalke man is unmarked and pokes goalwards - but also offside. But Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa doesn't know that and he spreads himself 'Schmeichelesque' to keep the ball out. Brilliant.

The Netherlands are looking short of ideas already. Stefan De Vrij lumps one forward before Bruno Martins Indi does the same. But that is meat and drink for Mexico skipper Rafael Marquez. He nods concrete bricks away for fun. Probably.

And Mexico do almost benefit. Carlos Salcido catches the tiring Dutch defence napping and fires a rasper just wide of the goal.

Ten minutes for Mexico to hold out. Ten minutes for the Dutch to rescue something. Anything will do - including one off Ron Vlaar's backside.
