Costa Rica defender Michael Umana, who hit the winning spot-kick: "Last night, I dreamt, this, it seems untrue.

"I was relaxed because I dreamed it. I dreamed it but I didn't tell anyone. I felt very confident.

"This is for my family. It's for the colleagues who got injured before coming here. They're not with us, but they gave us a hand on the pitch."

Goalkeepers can be heroes in penalty shootouts, and Keylor Navas certainly is now. He'll never have to buy a drink in Alajuela or Guadalupe again.

Rich Leeman:, external No matter what people say, England had a decent World Cup. We are the only team not to have conceded against Costa Rica.

The pride of a federation: The last team from CONCACAF to go further than the last 16 at the World Cup were the USA in 2002.

The States could yet join Costa Rica in the last eight of course. They play Belgium on Tuesday night.

C Slade:, external Held out with a man down, five perfect shots, fabulous goalkeeper. Well done Costa Rica!

Ash:, external As much as I'd love to see it, I wonder if Costa Rica can do the same against Netherlands. Could be too much.

Mickey:, external If Greece had qualified, it would have been an injustice. Costa Rica were outstanding all 120 minutes.

Costa Rica keeper Keylor Navas gave up a burgeoning career as a graphic designer to become a professional footballer.

With all due respect to the design world, I'm sure that decision has paid off tonight. You can pen all the designs you like but you'll never match the feeling of saving a penalty to put your homeland into the last eight of a World Cup. Surely?

He plays for Levante in Spain but rejected a new deal and only has one year left on his contract. Sign him up!

"It wasn't a bad penalty from Theofanis Gekas but you almost feel like Keylor Navas was in his head there. What a tremendous save. Navas was right out of his goal by the way, I thought at first the referee was going to call him back. The goalkeepers have been getting away with that.

"You have to feel for Greece but Costa Rica deserve it. Navas was the hero today."

"Michael Umana showed no nerves whatsoever, he did it like he's done it a million times before. The Costa Rica players cannot believe it. What a performance. To play with 10 men for so long, to hold on and maintain their composure in the penalties, there was no panic whatsoever. They had the arrogance to stay up there and say: 'I'll take it in my time.'

"They should be so proud. This is history for their country, they should celebrate now and they deserve it. Incredible scenes."

A staggered run-up, looks like it might go horribly wrong but it's actually brilliant, into the corner and the keeper goes the wrong way.
