    Have England got anything to fear when they face Uruguay in their crucial Group D match on Thursday? BBC Sport's Ben Smith suggests that when England watch a recording of Uruguay's defeat by Costa Rica, it should lift their spirits after losing to Italy.

    "It should be a straight battle between speed and organisation, youth and experience," writes Smith. "It is a battle England have all the attributes to win and win well."

    Bosnia-Hercegovina manager Safet Susic was part of an immensely talented young Yugoslavia side that could not deliver on its potential before civil war intervened.

    Their 1990 World Cup squad, containing an ageing Dragan Stojkovic, backed up by Robert Prosinecki (then 21), Davor Suker (22), Darko Pancev (24), Dejan Savicevic (23), Robert Jarni (21) and Alen Boksic (20), reached the quarter-finals where they were eliminated on penalties by Argentina after playing much of the match with 10 men.

    Zvonimir Boban, 21 at the time, missed out on selection. He later captained a Croatia team including Suker, Prosinecki and Jarni to a third-place finish at World Cup 1998.

    Spain's Xabi Alonso believes that the defending champions can bounce back from their 5-1 thrashing at the hands of the Netherlands, provided they play more intelligently against Chile on Wednesday.

    Italy are hoping goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon will recover in time for Friday's match against Costa Rica. He missed the Italians' 2-1 win over England on Saturday.

    On Buffon, who has had a twisted left ankle, Italy's team doctor Enrico Castellacci said: "We will try to have him available as soon as possible. We are optimistic that he will have a speedy recovery, but his health comes first."

    A glut of talented players took Portugal to successive editions of the youth version of the Fifa World Cup in 1989 and 1991.

    Luis Figo (who later played for Barcelona and Real Madrid) , Rui Costa (Fiorentina and AC Milan), Joao Pinto (Benfica), Paulo Sousa (Inter Milan and Juventus) and Fernando Couto (Barcelona and Lazio) all starred.

    But the "golden generation" only clicked at a World Cup when it was a little too late, a 33-year-old Figo leading them to the semi-finals in 2006.

    They performed better in the European Championships, reaching the last four in 2000 and losing to Greece in the final on home turf in 2004.

    Cameroon captain Samuel Eto'o is almost certain to miss Wednesday's World Cup game against Croatia because of injury.

    Eto'o, who has not trained for two days, wrote on Facebook:, external "The doctors confirm I will probably not be able to play the match against Croatia.

    "So unfortunate! An injury on my knee causes me a lot of pain. But do not worry about it. I have an unconditional trust in each of our Lions."

    Well England boss Roy Hodgson admits he needs to get Rooney into the penalty area more often. The striker played on the left in Saturday's 2-1 Fifa World Cup defeat by Italy and struggled to get into the game despite setting up an equaliser.

    "We want him in the area more," said Hodgson, whose side face Uruguay on Thursday in their second Group D game. "There is no question we will get him in the box."
