History was made on Sunday as goalline technology was used for the first time at a World Cup during the France v Honduras match. But it was not without controversy.

Brazilian referee Sandro Meira Ricci awarded the goal straight away as Karim Benzema's sidefoot effort came off the far post, rolled across the line, bounced off Noel Valladares and appeared to fully cross the line before the keeper could claw the ball back into play.

At first the system ruled 'No Goal', causing confusion inside the Porto Alegre stadium when that message was displayed on the big screen. But that was for the initial hit off the post. A second judgement followed showing the ball crossing the line after coming off the Honduras keeper.

On manager Alejandro Sabella changing tactics to bring Lionel Messi into play: "We all highlighted at half time Lionel Messi was lacking that half yard.

"At half-time, that is where the manager Alejandro Sabella earns his money - he looked at that first half and the front two were not working so he brought Gonzalo Higuain. Eventually it opened up more for Messi, in the second half he was more like the Messi we know."

On Lionel Messi's influence in Argentina's 2-1 victory over Bosnia-Hercegovina: "We were sat there in the stadium and there was a real sense of disappointment throughout the crowd.

"Everyone wanted to see Lionel Messi light the place up, but I think he was playing with us and he came out in the second half and showed what he can do.

"He scored that goal and came to life, he was floating about and getting into some good positions.

"The Bosnians would have felt comfortable; Messi looked out of sorts and then all of a sudden he turned it on. Messi was the defining factor."

    Paper round

BBC Sport's Tim Vickery discusses how Argentina manager Alejandro Sabella's decision to move Lionel Messi into the centre for the second half made Argentina look like a team. Which prompts the question, should England boss Roy Hodgson do the same with Wayne Rooney?

The England striker dominates today's back pages while BBC Sport's Alan Shearer says Wayne Rooney "should be number 10 or not play at all".

What do you think? Should Wayne Rooney be dropped? Or if he stays, where should Hodgson play him? And on Messi, where will the 26-year-old rank among the greats once his career is done and dusted?
