  2. Brazil celebrating a century of matchespublished at 15:53 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

Brazil's match with Cameroon will be their 100th World Cup match. They are only the second team to reach the milestone, with Germany having done so in their opening match at this tournament.

Ominously for Cameroon, Brazil are now unbeaten in 39 successive matches on home soil, with their last defeat coming against Paraguay in August 2002.

  3. Cameroon on record losing streakpublished at 15:47 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

Being the only African country to have beaten Brazil is all well and good, but Cameroon have lost their last six World Cup matches - which is the longest losing streak by an African country.

They have only won one of their last 15 games in the tournament (drawing four and losing 10).

The Indomitable Lions have also gone 13 consecutive World Cup matches without scoring more than one goal. The last time they did so was in a 2-2 draw with Sweden in 1994. (The only longer such streak in World Cup history is 18 by Uruguay, set between 1970 and 2002.)

  4. Who are the favourites?published at 15:44 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

What hope have Cameroon of beating Brazil tonight? If previous meetings and current form are anything to go by then Brazil are firm favourites.

Cameroon lost their first three matches against Brazil without scoring a goal, but they won the fourth - and most recent - meeting 1-0 in the 2003 Confederations Cup, with a Samuel Eto'o goal.

If you are rooting for Cameroon this evening, you'll be pleased to learn that they are the only African side to have beaten Brazil in a senior international match.

  5. Dutch in red hot formpublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

The omens are good for the Netherlands ahead of their match with Chile because the Dutch have only lost two of their 11 World Cup games against South American opposition.

Those defeats came in the 1978 final against Argentina (1-3 after extra-time) and the 1994 quarter-final against Brazil (2-3).

The good news for the Oranje is that they have not lost a World Cup group game since 1994.

  6. Shearer's silky skills?published at 15:35 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

Earlier, BBC Sport's Mark Chapman posted on vine Alan Shearer showing off his keepy-uppy skills and performing like a true Brazilian. But, it seems, the former England captain's heading ability isn't what it once was. "Headed keepy ups proved tricky for Alan Shearer," commented Chapman., external

  7. Chile aiming for first hat-trickpublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

Chile, who play the in-form Netherlands today, have won four of their last six World Cup games, having failed to win any of their preceding 13.

But they have only won two of their last 11 World Cup matches against European opposition.

Should Chile beat the Dutch, it will be the first time they have won three successive World Cup games within the same tournament.

  8. Gerrard optimistic about England's futurepublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

Steven Gerrard thinks England will perform much better at Euro 2016 because of their bruising experience in Brazil.

"The World Cup is a level where you don't forget your experiences in two weeks, four weeks, a couple of months - they live with you for a long time," said the England captain, who will start on the bench in Tuesday's dead rubber against Costa Rica.

"But you have to accept that and try and move forward so that if you're picked for another tournament, your experiences are better. I do think the youngsters here have that character."

  15. FA withdraws bid to stage women's World Cuppublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

    Richard Conway
BBC Radio 5 live sports news correspondent

The Football Association will not proceed with a bid to stage the 2019 women's World Cup in England.

After expressing their interest in hosting the tournament earlier this year The FA has decided not to submit a final proposal.

Fifa, football's world governing body, have set a deadline of October for interested parties to lodge a formal bid with France, New Zealand, South Africa and South Korea all keen to organise the event.

It is understood that The FA's decision has been prompted by a belief that France are strong favourites to win the bid.

  17. Today's Brazilian lessonpublished at 14:20 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

If visiting Recife in June, you'll find yourself in the middle of the Sao Joao (Saint John) festival, popular in many parts of Brazil, and rivalled only by carnival in this city.

Here, the festival has a very special flavour. There are delicacies made from corn and peanuts, eaten to the sound of forro - a traditional folk music.

Recife's caldo de sururu - a soup made with small clams - is one of the city's most famous foods. It is served in bars as a snack, to accompany a cold beer.
