  1. Alonso yet to decide on Spain futurepublished at 10:47 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

Xabi Alonso has denied speculation he is set to retire from international football, revealing he is still to decide on his future with Spain.

The Real Madrid midfielder grabbed the headlines after Spain's 2-0 defeat to Chile - which saw the world champions eliminated from the World Cup after just two games - by declaring that the team lacked "hunger" and "ambition".

Reports later emerged that the 32-year-old was set to call time on an illustrious 11-year international career with Spain, but he told Spanish radio station Onda Cero: "I'm still not at that moment - I want all this to end as soon as possible, go on holiday, disconnect a little and then decide things with time. Right now is not the time."

Russia fans were full of optimism on their way into the Maracana before the defeat by Belgium

Russia manager Fabio Capello apparently told his players they played well even though the 1-0 defeat by Belgium left their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

Midfielder Victor Fayzulin said: "Capello told us we'd played very well and that that's football. We gave them a chance and they took it.

"We knew that Belgium were favourites, but that wasn't obvious during the game. We managed to put them under pressure and had several good spells, but we simply couldn't score. That's football - if you don't score you're in trouble."

Os Eagles:, external It's shocking that a question of club v country is being used to overshadow the farce of our World Cup.

The Dutch Pundit:, external Country - playing on world stage can immortalise your name in football. Ask Gary Lineker. At club level you're just a good player.

  5. USA on a scoring runpublished at 10:35 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

USA attacked with verve against Portugal on Monday, but the 2-2 means they have still not won two World Cup games in a row since their opening two matches in the inaugural tournament in 1930.

They have at least scored in eight successive World Cup games, which is their best run since their opening eight matches between 1930 and 1990.

Jurgen Klinsmann's USA are closing in on a place in the knockout stages but success in the World Cup is not new to the USA, of course. They famously pulled off one of the greatest shocks in the history of the tournament when beating England in 1950.

Matt in Southampton: Frankly the way some 'fans' are I am not sure I would want to play for England. Rooney runs himself into the ground every game, accepts whatever position he is given. He gets the highest performance ratings. At this tournament we get two goals and he makes one and scores one. And the haters call for him to be dropped. Then people insult the players generally be saying they don't care, don't try. Maybe we need better fans.

Ali in London: Ask yourself as a player - would you waste your energy and risk injury for a meaningless England friendly or keep yourself fit for the midweek Champions League match? No-brainer for me.

It is also the final chapter in the Group B saga - the Netherlands and Chile have a 100% record and are already through. They both fight it out in Sao Paulo, with Chile needing to beat the Dutch to finish top and probably avoid a second-round meeting with Brazil.

In the other match, Australia - who were valiant against both qualifiers - face reigning champions Spain with both teams no doubt eager to avoid the wooden spoon.

So, who needs to do what today? Luiz Felipe Scolari's Brazil should be safe, needing just a draw to go through against eliminated Cameroon, although victory would guarantee them top spot.

They have four points, as do Mexico, who are involved in the tastier-looking contest against Croatia out in Recife.

A win for Croatia will see them through; a draw and Mexico are definitely into the next phase - with the Croatians joining them in the knockout round if Brazil lose. Both those matches kick off at 21:00 BST.

  10. Day 12 - Who is playing and who will win?published at 10:14 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

    Cameroon v Brazil, Group A (21:00 BST)

Mark Lawrenson: "Brazil should win and top the group but they have been OK at best so far. I was at their last group game and they struggled to break down Mexico - I just think they move the ball too slowly. You can also get at them when they don't have the ball."

    Cameroon v Brazil

    Lawro's prediction: Cameroon 0-2 Brazil

  11. Day 12 - Who is playing and who will win?published at 10:12 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

    Croatia v Mexico, Group A (21:00 BST)

Mark Lawrenson: "I am going to go for Mexico to get the point they need because I was impressed by them against Brazil. They play with three centre-backs but Rafael Marquez comes out from the back and the wing-backs bomb on. Oribe Peralta looked a decent player as well up front."

    Croatia v Mexico

    Lawro's prediction: Croatia 1-1 Mexico

  12. Day 12 - Who is playing and who will win?published at 10:10 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

    Australia v Spain, Group B (17:00 BST)

Mark Lawrenson: "This is the end of an era for Spain after an absolutely fantastic run so I think they will raise themselves against a spirited but limited Australia side, who were a bit unlucky not to get anything from their game with the Netherlands."

    Australia v Spain

    Lawro's prediction: Australia 1-2 Spain

  13. Day 12 - Who is playing and who will win?published at 10:08 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

    Netherlands v Chile, Group B (17:00 BST)

Mark Lawrenson: "The Dutch have gone from strength to strength, and scored a lot of goals, since almost going 2-0 down to Spain in the first half of their first game. But Chile have been very strong too and their high tempo in-your-face football will cause everybody problems at this World Cup."

    Netherlands v Chile

    Lawro's prediction: Netherlands 1-1 Chile

Cameroon midfielder Alex Song has been banned for three matches after his sending off in their World Cup Group A defeat by Croatia.

Cameroon, who cannot reach the last 16, face hosts Brazil in Brasilia tonight in their final Group A match.

There is no denying Cristiano Ronaldo's commitment to his country, with the Portugal captain playing in the 2-2 draw against USA despite suffering tendonitis in his left knee.

But Ronaldo's time at the World Cup could soon be coming to an end as Portugal are relying on a Germany win against the USA on Thursday to progress, and must also achieve a six-goal swing if they are to pip Jurgen Klinsmann's men to second place and reach the last 16.

Dave in Lincoln: Fans who have been brought up on a diet of Premier League are genuinely annoyed when this is disrupted by an England friendly. Can't really complain when some players feel the same!

Adam in London: Country should always come first, but the problem is that if you play well, you get hailed as a national hero, and if you play badly, you get ripped to shreds by the papers and pundits. I think there is that fear that players can't afford to be ripped to shreds because it may damage your club career.

  19. Hartson worried over Bale futurepublished at 09:41 British Summer Time 23 June 2014

    BBC Radio 5 live

John Hartson, who won 51 caps for Wales, says his country could face club-versus-country problems with Real Madrid's Gareth Bale.

"To represent your country at senior level... that was the highest accolade. It's your grandfather, your father, where you were born," says the former West Ham and Arsenal forward.

"John Charles, Trevor Ford, Ian Rush, Mark Hughes, Dean Saunders - heroes of mine had worn that red shirt.

"Wales now have a problem with Gareth Bale. He is absolutely pivotal. If he's available at every opportunity, I guarantee Wales will qualify for Euro 2016 but if he's not made available by Real Madrid, then Wales stand a lesser chance."
