  3. Adams: 'Gerrard has been fantastic'published at 10:03 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former Three Lions skipper Tony Adams on current England captain Steven Gerrard's performances in the World Cup: "Steve's had a great tournament. He's been solid, he keeps the ball moving. He's maybe a bit pedestrian at times but I think he's been fantastic.

"He's a great leader. We're asking Steve to play in a more defensive role and he's too good for that. I think he could have been a bit more adventurous. He's got great delivery from set plays.

"He's an excellent captain and a great leader."

  4. Van Gaal goes on the offensivepublished at 09:55 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

The Netherlands progressed to the last 16 with victory over Chile. It was their sixth successive World Cup group match win.

But soon-to-be Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal took journalists to task as he bristled at suggestions he wasn't playing attacking football.

"Could you give me a definition of attacking football? That's my question to you," he said to one journalist. "I'm asking you, if you have such a clever question... if you're going to ask me questions, I'm going to ask you questions.

"It's all about winning so I use the system I think will let me win... that's what I think football is. You have to evaluate a strategy that will help you win and this is the proof in the pudding. We're not giving away games and we're winning."

Today we're asking: What would you like to see from England against Costa Rica? Is a result more important than the performance? Will a victory go any way to easing the pain of the previous defeats?

Robin Greenwell:, external Nothing less than an England win to restore some pride. To go home with 'nil point' would be like Eurovision!

Jim Davies:, external I want them to get hammered to complete the humiliation and hopefully end the disgusting arrogance we have as a team.

Tim Little:, external England need a win to salvage pride. I fear though Hodgson has picked a team to keep players happy rather than to win a game.

  6. Adams recalls being chased by angry England fanspublished at 09:50 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former captain Tony Adams says England will find it difficult to enjoy tonight's match - even if they win.

Adams told 5 live World Cup Breakfast: "It's incredibly difficult for both fans and players. I scored my best international goal against Russia in Euro 1988 (when England had already been eliminated). I remember scoring the goal, running over to our fans and them booing me.

"They were disappointed. We'd lost the two previous games and they needed someone to blame. That wasn't a great moment for me. I was chased when I came home from the Euros.

"There were two busloads of fans who chased me in my Fiat Uno from Luton Airport. I feel for both sides of it. All the fans have paid a lot of money and the players will feel they haven't done themselves justice."

  7. Villa would be happy to play for two more decadespublished at 09:46 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

But David Villa has stopped short of admitting his international career is definitely over, although he conceded it would be difficult for him to play for his country again as prepares to join MLS side New York City FC.

The 32-year-old told the Spanish press: "I've always said that I love playing in the national team and that's what I've always dreamed of. I would play until I'm 55 but I'm aware that's impossible.

"If the coach wants to call me up, I would be delighted, but it's difficult and you need to be realistic. It would be normal that it all finishes here."

  8. Del Bosque explains Villa substitutionpublished at 09:43 British Summer Time 24 June 2014

Reigning champions Spain signed off with a convincing 3-0 victory over Australia, scoring three goals in a game for the first time in 12 World Cup matches.

Coach Vicente Del Bosque said there was "no rush" in making a decision over his future and admitted he did not realise the match against the Socceroos was David Villa's last for Spain.

"He said it was his last game, but I didn't know that. I'm sure he was upset," said Del Bosque, explaining why he had substituted his goalscorer, who had to be consoled on the bench, in the 57th minute. "All I was thinking about is that it was time to kill off the game."

"Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are going away to think about their international futures. Blimey. Is that their decision to make? They've got to be picked first.

"I think Roy Hodgson is looking ahead now to see what these younger lads are capable of."

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former England defender and BBC pundit Jimmy Armfield talks to 5 live World Cup Breakfast about England's meeting with Costa Rica tonight.

"They need to win - that's the first thing. If they lose, it'll be the worst all-time record and they don't want that.

"I don't think it will be easy because Costa Rica are one of the surprise packages of this World Cup. Their football is of a higher quality than most people expected, so England will have to play reasonably well to get a result."

Writing for the Daily Telegraph,, external Owen says: "The proposition that would excite me once Hodgson steps aside as expected in two years is to offer the opportunity to someone at the start of his coaching career and give him the platform to thrive.

"Someone who would command the respect of his peers and bring a fresher approach to the job. A personality who is completely in tune with the demands on the players at that level. Neville ticks every box."

Hodgson says Neville has all the qualities needed to become a manager, reports the Times., external
