  3. Chile's Pinilla putting the pain behind himpublished at 10:31 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

    Mauricio PinillaImage source, Independent

Chile striker Mauricio Pinilla has had his agonising miss in the final minute against Brazil inked into his back.

The 30-year-old crashed a shot against the crossbar in the 119th minute, moments before his side were beaten on penalties by the hosts, who will now face Colombia in the last eight.

Why would he want a lasting memory of such a painful defeat? Maybe it's symbolic and he wants to put the heartache behind him. At least he will have difficulty seeing it.

Forget the Rio Carnival, Sao Paulo - venue for Argentina versus Switzerland - knows how to party.

The Grupo Especial is a competition featuring 14 of the top samba schools in the sambodromo (an exhibition of samba schools). The schools, each with their samba theme, try to impress the judges and the viewers at home, with the event televised.

Themes in the past, external have included a century of Japanese immigration to Brazil and the deliciousness of chocolate.

It may not match the standards and flavour of Rio, but it is still as colourful and bold.

  6. Do not concede an early goalpublished at 10:16 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Brazil 2-1 Croatia as Neymar scoresImage source, Reuters

Neymar's late penalty helped Brazil to a 3-1 victory in the tournament opener against Croatia, with the host nation coming from behind to win the game. There's a reason for this tale. Stick with it.

In only eight of the 54 matches played so far in this tournament have sides fought back to win from a losing position.

A further six matches have ended in draws, which means giving away an early goal can prove fatal because sides which have conceded first have lost 35 times.

  7. Neymar set to face Colombiapublished at 10:05 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

As touched upon in 'headlines on the hour', Neymar is apparently not an injury concern for Brazil's quarter-final against Colombia.

The 22-year-old picked up left thigh and right knee injuries in the second-round win on penalties against Chile.

"The worst is the knee - it's what's hurting the most," said Brazil spokesman Rodrigo Paiva. "He will be evaluated again, but team doctor Jose Luiz Runco said fans don't have to worry because he's not a concern for the match."

  9. Klinsmann criticises referee choicepublished at 09:54 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

The American media's focus on 44-year-old Djamel Haimoudi probably has something to do with Jurgen Klinsmann, the old so and so.

The USA manager has criticised Fifa's appointment of an Algerian referee for their World Cup second-round match against Belgium.

Klinsmann maintains the Belgians will be able to communicate better with the referee as they both speak French and pointed out that the USA knocked Algeria out of the 2010 World Cup.

  10. USA set for 'epic' nightpublished at 09:50 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Who says soccer is not important across the Pond? ABC News are already building up to what they dub an "epic" game as the Stars and Stripes take on Belgium later today (21:00 BST).

Interestingly, they choose to focus on the match official - Djamel Haïmoudi. I wonder if Howard Webb is a household name Stateside?

  12. First half empty or second half full?published at 09:39 British Summer Time 1 July 2014

Jurgen Klinsmann's USA take on Belgium later today for a place in the quarter-finals and, if the USA coach has done his homework, he and his team might not bother showing up for the first half.

All of Belgium's four goals in this tournament have come in the last 45 minutes of their games, with Vincent Kompany and co scoring a big zero in the first half of their matches.

There should be plenty of goals after the break because USA have scored 75% of their goals in the second half.

Are you head over heels in love with this World Cup?

So far, if you're a viewer who likes goals and pure football over rugged defending, you are getting more buck for your bang than in previous tournaments.

For once, Germany's Thomas Mueller and Miroslav Klose were not able to find the net as their side beat Algeria, meaning James Rodriguez of Colombia still leads the race to be the World Cup's top goal scorer.

His five goals in four games puts him one ahead of Mueller, Brazil's Neymar and Argentina's Lionel Messi, who plays later today.
