    "Cameroon lost all three of their World Cup games to Mexico, Croatia and the hosts, Brazil. Now its football association says it will investigate what it calls 'allegations of fraud' in those games and claims that seven players were involved in manipulating results.

    "Under particular scrutiny is the game against Croatia, in which Cameroon conceded four goals and had midfielder Alex Song sent off for elbowing an opponent.

    "Fifa declined to comment on the allegations or confirm whether they were investigating. However a spokeswoman told the BBC that integrity in the game is their top priority, as such, they take any allegations of match fixing very seriously."

    Paul Pogba, meanwhile, could not hide his delight after playing an instrumental role in France's progress to the quarter-finals.

    "I have no words to describe this feeling," he said. "The whole country is behind us and scoring that goal really liberated us.

    "To score a goal for your country, especially in such an important game as this, to get into the last eight of the World Cup is one of the best moments of my life."

    France coach Didier Deschamps praised Paul Pogba's goalscoring performance after his side booked a quarter-final against Germany.

    The 21-year-old midfielder was dropped for France's second game after a petulant display in the opener against Honduras, and Deschamps said: "He's young, criticism is part of life at the highest level and it can be unfair sometimes.

    "But it will toughen him up. He showed the huge potential he has when he plays a bit more simply. He should get the credit, but I have no doubts about his capacity to play at this level."

    Nigeria's defeat resulted in their coach Stephen Keshi stepping down from his position.

    Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo also retired from international football following their exit.

    "This is it. I can look back on my career with great pride," said Yobo. "It's time to give a chance to other people to come through. Our football has a bright future and I am confident this team can achieve success sooner rather than later."

    A 2-0 victory over Nigeria lifted France into the last eight of the World Cup and gave Didier Deschamps a record of eight wins and two draws in his 10 games in the tournament as a player and manager.

    Defender Eliaquim Mangala took to Facebook afterwards, external and wrote: "A country's dream... a team, a group devoted, France in the quarter-final. What happiness!"

    France didn't leave it quite as late as their last-eight opponents Germany, but Les Bleus didn't seal their progress until they scored twice in the final 11 minutes against Nigeria.

    Paul Pogba eventually headed in after an Enyeama error and Joseph Yobo diverted Mathieu Valbuena's cross into the net.

    France, of course, have pedigree in the knockout rounds, having reached at least the semi-finals on the last five occasions they have progressed past the first round at the World Cup.

    Germany's round of 16 match with Algeria drew more than seven million tweets globally, with goalkeepers Manuel Neuer and Rais Mbolhi the most mentioned players.

    The Germans had 28 shots at Mbolhi's goal, the highest figure in the tournament, while Neuer impressed with his speed in rushing from the goalline.

    The Bayern Munich stopper saved just three shots but recovered 12 balls as he filled the role of sweeper-keeper.
